1815 CHRONOGRAPH “Hampton Court Edition
Watchmaking artistry for a good cause

At the Concours of Elegance 2022, A. Lange & Söhne will present a one-of-a-kind version of the 1815 CHRONOGRAPH that will be auctioned off in Geneva by Phillips in Association with Bacs & Russo on 6 November. The proceeds of the unique timepiece, featuring a solid-silver dial and a hand-engraved hinged cuvette, will go to The Prince’s Trust, a youth charity set up by HRH The Prince of Wales.

A. Lange & Söhne has been a partner of the Concours of Elegance since 2018. This year, it will take place from 2 to 4 September in the grounds of Hampton Court Palace on the outskirts of London. The high-calibre beauty pageant is a venue not only for rare automobiles but also for the exclusive mechanical timepieces crafted by A. Lange & Söhne. For the Glashütte manufactory, the Concours of Elegance provides the ideal backdrop for introducing a very special watch: the unique version of the 1815 CHRONOGRAPH with a hinged cuvette. This exclusive timepiece will be auctioned off on 6 November 2022 at the Geneva Watch Auction XVI for the benefit of The Prince’s Trust.

The charitable organisation was founded by HRH The Prince of Wales in 1976 and supports young people aged 11 to 30 to develop essential life skills, get ready for work, and access job opportunities. “We are proud to have the opportunity to support the important work of The Prince’s Trust,” said Wilhelm Schmid. The Lange CEO is convinced that each child, regardless of their upbringing and social background, should have a fair chance of self-fulfilment and a happy future.

An exclusive combination

Since it was introduced in 2004, the 1815 CHRONOGRAPH has stood for the alliance between classic design and progressive technology. With artisanal perfection and refined details, its design is fully focused on optimised legibility. Thus, the dial with Arabic numerals, the railway-track minute scale, and the slightly shifted subsidiary dials are reminiscent of the of A. Lange & Söhne’s historic pocket watches.

Crafted explicitly for this year’s Concours of Elegance, the 1815 CHRONOGRAPH “Hampton Court Edition stands out with a unique combination of features: For the first time, a white-gold case meets a black dial with sandstone-coloured numerals and scales. The tachometer scale on the peripheral – which enables the calculation of average speeds – emphasises the historic connection between motor sport and time measurement.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The rhodié-coloured subsidiary dials for the small seconds and the minute counter contrast well with the black dial. Good legibility is also assured by the rhodiumed case-matched gold hands for the hours and minutes as well as by the rhodiumed steel hands for the chrono seconds, the subsidiary seconds, and the minute counter. The elegance of the concept is accentuated with a black hand-stitched alligator leather strap that is secured with a prong buckle in solid white gold.

The beauty of precision

The selection of one of the most beautiful flyback chronographs for the “Concours Edition also builds a bridge between motor sport and time measurement. The hinged cuvette, hand-engraved with the logo of the Concours of Elegance, conceals the Lange calibre L951.5 movement launched in 2010

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

It is assembled twice and features a column-wheel control, a precisely jumping minute counter, and a flyback function. The manually wound calibre has a power reserve of 60 hours. A large cam-poised balance wheel driven by a freely oscillating hairspring crafted in-house assures excellent rate accuracy. With its frequency of 18,000 semi-oscillations per hour (2.5 hertz), the watch displays stopped times to an accuracy of one-fifth of a second.

The sapphire-crystal caseback reveals the lavishly hand-finished chronograph mechanism. A subtly composed choice of different materials and surface decorations emphasises the three-dimensionality of the open movement architecture. This highlights the details of the complex switching processes as well as the artistically hand-engraved balance cock with Lange’s iconic whiplash spring.

Thanks to its floral motif, this small but magnificently decorated part of the movement makes every Lange timepiece recognisable – the engraver’s personal signature also makes the 1815 CHRONOGRAPH a unique piece.

A. Lange & Sohne –ODYSSEUS Titanium DATOMATIC Edition

A. Lange & SohneODYSSEUS Titanium DATOMATIC® Ice-Blue Dial Edition 2022

Exquisite watchmaking artistry and casual elegance in titanium

With the titanium ODYSSEUS, A. Lange & Söhne presents a casually elegant timepiece for high-end technical and aesthetic expectations. Additionally, it underscores the Saxon manufactory’s motto to never stand still. The new ice-blue colour and an exclusive surface structure adorn the dial of the brand’s first titanium timepiece in a 250-watch limited edition.

The ODYSSEUS is designed for ambitious individuals who want a watch that accompanies them in life’s most memorable moments. Its development is inspired by the concept of an artisanally perfected timepiece which is so robust and water-resistant that it can also be worn in leisure and sports settings.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The large day and date display can be conveniently adjusted with the prominent tapered buttons; their distinctive design is now also a hallmark of A. Lange & Söhne’s first titanium watch.

New remarkably lightweight case material

The decision to craft the case and bracelet of the third ODYSSEUS model in titanium is based on the special properties of the material. Titanium weighs about 43 per cent less than stainless steel, clearly improving the already high level of comfort of the ODYSSEUS on the wrist. With a diameter of 40.5 millimetres and a height of 11.1 millimetres, the watch hugs the wrist almost unnoticeably. Moreover, titanium is extremely robust.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

When exposed to oxygen, it produces a very thin transparent oxide coating that protects the material against external factors and makes it corrosion-resistant. Its warm gloss is paired with a unique patina that comes to the fore in the ODYSSEUS with a combination of polished, matte, and brushed surfaces. Like the stainless-steel and white-gold versions, the titanium ODYSSEUS has a water-resistant case with a screw-down crown that can handle a test pressure of 12 bar.

New colour and distinctive structure

In keeping with the other versions of the ODYSSEUS family, the titanium edition, limited to 250 watches, also has a multi-part dial. In addition to the new ice-blue colour, it features its own surface structure, primarily showcased by the decor on the hour ring. Here, the fine guilloched grooves extend in gentle arcs to the hour markers, creating an embedded look. This amplifies the three-dimensional effect and doubles as an exclusive signature.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The motif reappears in circular lines on the scale of the subsidiary seconds dial. The irregularly structured inner surfaces of the main and subsidiary dials contrast with the uniform lines. The argenté-coloured flange ring with the minute scale forms a shadow gap and adds lucidity to the dial.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Among the Arabic five-minute numerals in black, the red printed 60 stands out as a colour accent. The sporty nature of the watch is emphasised by prominent hour and minute hands with the Lange-typical lance shape. Just like the notched baton appliques, they are made of polished white gold and filled with a luminous compound.

Titanium bracelet with safety deployant buckle

For its first watch with a titanium case, A. Lange & Söhne created a matching bracelet that forms a harmonious entity with the case. Like the stainless-steel bracelet of the first ODYSSEUS, it is very comfortable to wear.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Thanks to its precision-stepped, easily operable adjustment mechanism, the length of the closed bracelet can be changed by as much as 7 millimetres.

A robust, superbly finished movement

Specially conceived for sports and leisure activities, the ODYSSEUS features a reliable and precise self-winding movement that matches the upscale expectations of a manufactory focused on craftsmanship in every respect.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This is clearly reflected by the design of the L155.1 DATOMATIC movement that can be admired through the sapphire-crystal caseback. The name DATOMATIC comes from the words “date” and “automatic”. A skeletonised and partially black-rhodiumed central rotor with a centrifugal mass in 950 platinum delivers ample winding power. When fully wound, the watch has a power reserve of 50 hours.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The oscillation system is designed for superb rate stability. For this purpose, the balance – it beats with a frequency of 28,800 semi-oscillations per hour (4 hertz) – has been aerodynamically optimised with recessed poising screws and firmly suspended beneath the balance bridge. It is manually engraved with a stylised wave pattern, evoking the water-resistance of the watch. In line with Lange’s philosophy, all parts are lavishly hand-finished and the movement is assembled twice. This includes the German-silver plate decorated with Glashütte ribbing and the screwed gold chaton that marks the position of the escape wheel.

A. Lange & Sohne – Festive Season 2021

A. Lange & Sohne – Festive Season 2021

The most precious thing you can give

With all the wonderful festivities, winter is a time to reflect and think about the things that really matter in life. A time to escape from the hectic rhythm of everyday life and to find peace. It is also a time to look back with gratitude and give our nearest and dearest something special that will bring them real joy.

With a timepiece from A. Lange & Söhne, the recipient will think back on time spent together in the past and look forward to sharing more time with you in the future.

LANGE 1 MOON PHASEa heavenly delight, both day and night

Those who love poetry – but not at the expense of precision – will truly appreciate the LANGE 1 MOON PHASE. With its eponymous complication, this watch depicts the eternal lunar cycle exactly, paying close attention to detail. Even when earth's satellite is at its brightest, unfolding its unique magic in the dark night sky, it still accompanies us during the day.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This phenomenon, which we rarely notice, is reflected in the extraordinary display of the LANGE 1 MOON PHASE. While the solid-gold moon charts its path across a bright-blue sky during the day, the fascinating spectacle is set against a dark-blue background at night. To complete the stylish design, the celestial body is accompanied by a myriad of tiny laser-cut stars – 383 of them, to be precise. The celestial disc completes exactly one turn in each 24-hour period and features different shades of blue thanks to special interference effects. The different times of day are thus displayed in this manner as well.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Like all moon-phase displays by A. Lange & Söhne, the manufacture calibre L121.3 mechanism is astronomically precise: it only deviates from the synodic period by a single day once every 122.6 years. The other elements on the solid-silver dial are also bound to impress. The luminous time indication, power-reserve display and Lange outsize date are integrated into the off-centre dial layout in perfect harmony.

LANGEMATIK PERPETUAL a gift for eternity

The perpetual calendar is one of the most popular and practical features of mechanical time-keeping instruments because the complication allows the wearer to always keep track of important dates – particularly useful over the festive period. The LANGEMATIK PERPETUAL was the very first mechanical wristwatch to combine this complication with the Lange outsize date. Twinning maximum functionality with ease of use, all of the calendar displays can be advanced simultaneously using a single main corrector. The harmonious design ensures that all of the functions – the hour, minute, second, outsize date, day of the week, month, leap-year hand and astronomically precise moon phase – are intuitively legible. Once it has been set correctly, the mechanism is pre-programmed to display the correct date and month, even in leap years, until 2100. This is achieved by the self-winding manufacture calibre L922.1 SAX-0-MAT with Lange's proprietary ZERO-RESET mechanism, which is developed to set the time with one-second accuracy.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This mechanical microcosm contains 478 individual parts that work together in perfect harmony. One of them is a bidirectional 21-carat-gold rotor with a platinum centrifugal mass that ensures the maximum power reserve of 46 hours is achieved after just a short time on the wrist. In order to show off the going train with the hand-engraved balance cock and the classic whiplash precision index adjuster in all its beauty through the sapphire crystal case back, it is integrated into the three-quarter plate.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

To mark the twentieth anniversary of this technical masterpiece, two limited editions of the LANGEMATIK PERPETUAL were released this year. With each run consisting of just 50 watches, they come in white gold or pink gold with a blue dial. These two precise and stylish timepieces are the perfect companions for a journey to the year 2100.

SAXONIA MOON PHASEa classic choice

Classics are often particularly popular during the festive period. We give our loved ones classic novels, listen to classical music and look forward to evenings watching classic movies. The SAXONIA MOON PHASE by A. Lange & Söhne is a true classic in the realm of fine mechanical watches. It boasts a clear, characterful design with an exciting combination of two popular complications.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Lange's trademark outsize date is clearly legible and positioned prominently just underneath 12 o'clock. It is balanced by the moon-phase display, which appears at 6 o'clock together with the subsidiary seconds. This design makes for perfect harmony on the solid-silver dial. Finely polished baton appliques in solid gold lend the watch an unsurpassed elegance.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTOThe best classics all have something in common: No matter how many times you read them, listen to them or watch them, you discover something new. The SAXONIA MOON PHASE is no exception, because if you take a closer look, you will spot no fewer than 852 stars on its lunar disc. Turning it over to admire the movement through the sapphire-crystal caseback, you will find a hand-engraved balance cock, a precisely oscillating screw balance, and numerous surfaces embellished with care and skill. A true feast for the senses.

ZEITWERK STRIKING TIMEthe sound of time

The ZEITWERK STRIKING TIME is a masterpiece for those who love extraordinary mechanical complications. With this timepiece, A. Lange & Söhne puts not one, but two such complications on the wearer's wrist: a striking mechanism and precisely jumping numerals displaying the time in digital fashion. Each of these is an outstanding achievement in its own right. Together, they represent a tour de force of contemporary fine watchmaking. When the striking mechanism is activated, it chimes on the hour and the quarter hours.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

To the wearer's delight, the two powerful little steel hammers that make the time audible are also visible in all their glory on the dial. The one on the right chimes on the quarter hours, while the one on the left strikes on the hour. The two gongs embedded in a recess between the dial and the bezel are also clear to see. Every 15 minutes, the mechanism triggers a hammer to strike one of these two gongs. The higher-pitched gong marks the quarter hours three times before a lower chime indicates the full hour.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Not only is the striking mechanism music to the ears, but the precisely jumping numerals are also a feast for the eyes. The large digits of the side-by-side hour and minute displays are an expressive example of clear, intuitively legible design. Within fractions of a second, the patented constant-force escapement advances the jumping numerals display one minute at a time.

It is particularly pleasing to see all three numeral discs change simultaneously on the hour. The ZEITWERK STRIKING TIME works to the rhythm of the manufacture calibre L043.2, which is decorated and finished in accordance with all the conventions of Saxon watchmaking artistry. This melodious timepiece is available in white gold with a black dial or pink gold with an argenté dial.

Give the gift of time

Although we may still be unable to truly fathom the fleeting nature of time, there can be no doubt that spending time face to face with our loved ones and bringing them joy has immeasurable value. The most precious gift of all is time.

A. Lange & Sohne – LANGEMATIK PERPETUAL Calendar Edition

A. Lange & Söhne SAXONIA LANGEMATIK PERPETUAL Calendar Gold Limited Edition 2021

LANGEMATIK PERPETUAL

The LANGEMATIK PERPETUAL was the first mechanical wristwatch to combine a perpetual calendar with the Lange outsize date. It differs from other calendar timepieces with small but subtle features such as the ZERO-RESET mechanism and a main corrector for simultaneously advancing all calendar displays. On the occasion of its 20th birthday, it now comes in white gold or pink gold, both combined with a blue dial, each in a 50-watch limited edition.

If you have a keen eye for subtle differences, you can enjoy some fascinating details on this year's novelties by A. Lange & Söhne, accentuated beautifully by the summer daylight.

Our lives are finally moving outdoors again, and we can shift from working inside at home to working in cafes and gardens. Outside in the lovely light of summer is where the numerous special features of the summer novelties by A. Lange & Söhne come into their own. These offer a rich variety of aesthetic, handcrafted and technical refinements. Each of the 3D-effect dials on the CABARET TOURBILLON HANDWERKSKUNST, LANGEMATIK PERPETUAL and SAXONIA THIN is tailored to the character of the respective limited edition. The surfaces of the manufacture calibres, which are lavishly finished manually, will delight connoisseurs thanks to their painstakingly applied polishes, decorative finishes and engravings.

Instead of shooting these items in the studio, our photographer opted to engage directly with his subject out in the open air. By taking advantage of the natural sunlight, he was able to skilfully showcase the fine differences that set the new models by A. Lange & Söhne apart.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

When the LANGEMATIK PERPETUAL was introduced in March 2001, it was the first and only self-winding watch with a perpetual calendar, Lange's iconic outsize-date display, a ZERO-RESET function and a main corrector for simultaneously advancing all calendar displays. This is still true today.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The development and ongoing success of this exceptional watch is credited to a highly motivated team of experts, and specifically to one gifted individual, Günter Blümlein. The co-founder and first CEO of the manufactory spared no effort to meld horological beauty and artisanal perfection.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This was accomplished in a particularly impressive manner with the LANGEMATIK PERPETUAL, which was launched a few months prior to his untimely death. On the occasion of its 20th birthday, it now comes in white gold or pink gold, in limited editions of 50 watches each.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The blue dials of both new versions of the LANGEMATIK PERPETUAL are crafted from solid silver. The applied Roman numerals, underlaid with an embossed groove structure, prominently stand out against the dark background. On the white-gold model, they are made of rhodiumed gold – just like the hands, appliques and lunar disc – and of pink gold on the pink-gold version.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The hands for the hours, minutes, days of the week and month are luminous, as are the hour markers along the minute scale. A dark-blue leather strap with a prong buckle in white gold or pink gold complements the harmony of the timepiece.

A perpetual calendar unlike any other

"Innovation and differentiating design elements are key parameters for us," Günter Blümlein once said in an interview. "Our watches must be classic and understated in looks, sleek, useful, and essentially German in nature." At A. Lange & Söhne, this ambition steadily evolved into a cultural statement that emphasises subtle differences and manifests itself in many details. The LANGEMATIK PERPETUAL lives up to these lofty expectations in every respect.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The design of the dial complies with the principle of information hierarchy, assuring the best and most intuitive legibility of the calendar displays. As the most important information element, the outsize date is prominently positioned. The subsidiary dial on the left shows the day of the week; the one on the right displays the month. The perpetual calendar takes into account the different durations of the months in a four-year cycle, including those of the leap years. Once the watch is correctly set, a manual adjustment of the date is not needed until the year 2100.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The moon-phase display at 6 o'clock, paired with the subsidiary seconds dial, is also a long-term indication; it only requires a correction of one day every 122.6 years. All calendar displays can be advanced collectively with a (recessed) main corrector at 10 o'clock. They can also be set separately.

Horological artistry with automatic winding

The self-winding L922.1 Sax-0-Mat calibre features the ZERO-RESET mechanism developed by Lange. When the crown is pulled, the balance wheel stops and the seconds hand jumps to the zero position.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This simplifies and speeds up time setting. The bidirectionally winding rotor ensures that the maximum power reserve of 46 hours is attained within just a short time on the wrist. Integrated in the three-quarter plate, it consists of 21-carat gold with a centrifugal mass in platinum. This makes the escapement with hand-engraved balance cock and classic whiplash precision index adjuster readily visible.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Thanks to a movement height of merely 5.7 millimetres, the watch has a very slender silhouette. The case has a diameter of 38.5 millimetres and a height of just 10.2 millimetres. Artisanal perfection down to the smallest detail makes the LANGEMATIK PERPETUAL an horological work of art for perpetuity. Not visible but tangible is the uncompromising benchmark of quality expressed by the two-fold assembly of all Lange manufacture calibres.

*****

About A. Lange & Söhne
Dresden watchmaker Ferdinand Adolph Lange laid the cornerstone of Saxony's precision watchmaking industry when he established his manufactory in 1845. His precious pocket watches remain highly coveted among collectors all over the world. The company was expropriated after World War II, and the name A. Lange & Söhne nearly vanished. In 1990, Ferdinand Adolph Lange's great-grandson Walter Lange had the courage to relaunch the brand. Today, Lange crafts only a few thousand wristwatches per year, predominantly in gold or platinum. They are endowed exclusively with proprietary movements that are lavishly decorated by hand and assembled twice. With 67 manufacture calibres developed since 1990, A. Lange & Söhne has secured a top-tier position in the world of watchmaking. Brand icons such as the LANGE 1 with the first outsize date in a regularly produced wristwatch, and the ZEITWERK with its precisely jumping numerals display, rank among the company's greatest successes. Exceptional complications such as the ZEITWERK MINUTE REPEATER, the TRIPLE SPLIT, and the so far most complicated model, the GRAND COMPLICATION presented in 2013 in a six-watch limited edition, reflect the manufactory's determination to achieve ever new pinnacles in its tradition-steeped horological artistry. Launched in 2019, the sporty-elegant ODYSSEUS marks the beginning of a new chapter for A. Lange & Söhne.
