  • A minimalist design inspired by special retrograde displays from the 1920s and 1930s.
  • Understatement, harmony and elegance highlighted by the association between the platinum of the case and the salmon pink shade of the dial, a signature from the Maison.
  • Calibre 2460 R31R7/3, a manufacture self-winding movement in the purest tradition of Haute Horlogerie.

At Vacheron Constantin, technique is consistently dedicated to serving elegance. Since its founding in 1755, the Manufacture has cultivated the refinement of its watches as an art form, corresponding to one of the Bauhaus principles holding that "less is more". This is reflected in the platinum Patrimony retrograde day-date with salmon-coloured dial.

With its rare combination of retrograde complications evoking the iconoclastic displays of the 1920s and 1930s, this timepiece excels in its field.

In the purest Vacheron Constantin style

Imagining a timeless style is a quest that Vacheron Constantin has been pursuing since its foundation, as is once again demonstrated by this new Patrimony retrograde day-date watch in 950 platinum with a salmon-coloured dial.

Heir to the grand stylistic and technical tradition of the Maison, this limited annual production timepiece reveals meticulous attention to detail in which the expression of minimalism is combined with technical excellence.

The 42.5 mm-diameter 950 platinum case frames a salmon-coloured dial with a sunburst pattern reflecting the codes of the collection. The purity of the design matches the model’s mechanical and aesthetic sophistication.

Every detail is designed to reflect the aesthetic characteristics of Vacheron Constantin. Beneath the 12 o'clock hour-marker sits a facetted Maltese cross in relief, the emblem of the Maison.

Crafted in 18K 5N pink gold, it features facets that are sandblasted on one side and polished on the other, offering a new expression of the Vacheron Constantin symbol specific to this signature platinum case and salmon-coloured dial.

The two retrograde (day and date) indications are made with blued steel hands in keeping with tradition, while the hours and minutes are displayed by 18K white gold hands. In classic 1950s style, the latter are subtly curved to match the shape of the domed dial with its intense reflections.

The circular-grained peripheral minutes track is also inspired by this era in a revisited version. From the very first glance, this timepiece embodies the refined style cultivated by Vacheron Constantin.

Salmon-coloured dial, a Vacheron Constantin signature

The development of coloured dials – from the 1930s onwards – enabled a new style of elegance to be displayed on the wrist.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Featured in Vacheron Constantin watches since the 1940s, salmon-coloured dials make an ideal match with cases in white metal: particularly steel, notably with the legendary chronograph Reference 4178; as well as platinum, with which it forms a rare combination sought after by collectors and devotees of rare models. The combination of platinum case and salmon-coloured dial was picked up in the 1990s, again in conjunction with complications, such as the classic chronograph Reference 47101 and the 1992 self-winding perpetual calendar chronograph Reference 49005.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This alliance between platinum and salmon is thus part of the Maison’s heritage and since 2022 has been the sign of a new aesthetic that can be found across its various collections in limited annual production.

The spirit of the new Patrimony retrograde day-date thus draws its aesthetic and technical inspiration from tradition while revisiting it.

In-House calibre 2460 R31R7/3, the essence of Haute-Horlogerie

The Patrimony retrograde day-date is driven by in-house self-winding calibre 2460 R31R7/3 operating at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

It is fitted with a 22K gold openworked oscillating weight with a design inspired by the Maltese cross emblem and has an approximately 40-hour power reserve. In the grand tradition of in-house calibres, the bridges are finished with hand-polished angles.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Straight-graining, which consists of perfectly smoothing the component flanks, is also performed by hand, while the screws are meticulously polished.

The mainplate is circular-grained on both sides, while the bridges are adorned on the back with the Côtes de Genève motif.

Sum-up

With its original combination of retrograde complications evoking the iconoclastic displays of the 1920s and 1930s, the new Patrimony retrograde day-date in 950 platinum with a salmon-toned dial perpetuates a refined style.

Elegance and technicality are highlighted by a dial colour exclusively associated with timepieces featuring a 950 platinum case in limited annual production and only available in Vacheron Constantin boutiques.

Interview with Christian Selmoni

When did the first retrograde indications at Vacheron Constantin appear?

Even though the Manufacture has in-depth knowledge of its archives, it is possible that certain timepieces have not yet been discovered. That being said, the first wristwatch to feature a retrograde date was the Don Pancho, nicknamed by collectors after the person for whom it was commissioned.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In 1935, the Maison received an order from Brooking, its official retailer in Madrid, for a wristwatch with functions that were previously reserved for pocket watches featuring complications: a minute repeater and calendar indications, with a retrograde hand. It took four years until 1940 to meet this order and deliver Reference 3620, now known as the Don Pancho: a tonneau-shaped wristwatch in yellow gold, distinguished by its crown at 12 o'clock and its minute repeater with deliberately low tones, activated via a right-hand slide piece.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Don Pancho wore it for seven years and it then vanished for 60 years before reappearing in 2019 at Phillips, Bacs & Russo where it attracted the second highest bid ever for a wristwatch from the Maison.  Another remarkable model unveiled in 1994 which highlights the craze for unusual dials is the Mercator watch. A tribute to the 16th century geographer Gérard Mercator, this creation features a double retrograde display of trailing hours and minutes on an enamelled or engraved dial. The positioning of the hand axis at 12 o'clock provides an ideal surface for expression on this model from the Métiers d'Art collection.

Why is the Don Pancho so important in the history of Vacheron Constantin?

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Aurel Bacs who auctioned it in 2019 explained it in very clear terms: "The historical importance of this timepiece cannot be stressed enough. Made at a time when wristwatches with multiple complications simply did not exist, it is a technical feat and a masterpiece of human genius. The combination of a minute repeater and a calendar with retrograde date had never previously been seen in a wristwatch, and it would be nearly 60 years before we saw something similar."

Vacheron Constantin wristwatches with retrograde date made a comeback in the early 2000s with Reference 47245, presented to mark the 245th anniversary of the Manufacture and which featured a retrograde date but a day display via an auxiliary dial at 6 o'clock and a trailing hand.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The system of displaying the date by retrograde hands offers advantages in terms of legibility but is technically very complex to implement. It was not until 2006 that the first double retrograde day-date wristwatch was produced, Reference 86020.

VACHERON CONSTANTIN – Les Cabinotiers Dual Moon Grand Complication - Unique Piece

VACHERON CONSTANTIN Les Cabinotiers Dual Moon Grand Complication Minute Repeater Gold - Unique Piece 2023

New in-house movement with 11 complications

  •     One-of-a-kind double-sided watch housing new manual-winding in-house Calibre 2755 TMRCCQP and 11 horological complications including a minute repeater, a perpetual calendar, a precision moon phases, a sky chart.
  •     Extremely complex timepiece with an atypical face accentuated by the double central display of the moon phases.
  •     Highly elaborate design ensuring perfect readability of the time-related and astronomical indications.

With its time-related and astronomical complications regulated by a tourbillon and completed by a minute repeater, the manual-winding 2755 TMRCCQP calibre powering this watch is a masterpiece of complexity with its 774 components. Representing one of watchmaking’s most sophisticated grand complications, this white gold single-piece edition displays its indications in a perfectly legible manner. Stemming from an aesthetic quest dedicating elegance and purity of style to the service of technical sophistication, this timepiece is notably distinguished by the Maison’s characteristic retrograde function as well as by the refined finishes highlighting the double moon phase display that is the key feature of this watch.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO  The initial intention behind the Les Cabinotiers Dual moon Grand Complication watch was to pay an original tribute to the Moon. Often relegated to the background, the moon display is now very much in the forefront on this model, asserting its striking presence both by its colour code and by its size. As the idea was also to offer a vision of the Earth's satellite as it appears in the northern and southern hemispheres, the central moon phase indication, already a rarity in the watchmaking world, is therefore characterized by a double display.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This complication, already featured in the Les Cabinotiers Tourbillon armillary perpetual calendar – Planetaria watch, makes a strong statement in this highly technical musical timepiece with an astronomical vocation and 11 complications.

Front: a spectacular show

Indications:
- Off-centre mean solar time with hours and minutes
- Precision moon phases and age in both hemispheres
- Gregorian perpetual calendar with day, month, leap-year indications and instantaneous retrograde date hand
- Minute repeater
- Precision moon phases and age for the Northern and Southern hemispheres

The full measure of Vacheron Constantin's ingenuity in staging the art of watchmaking is stylishly and elegantly expressed in this double-sided watch. This highly complex model is distinguished by the legibility of its hourly and astronomical functions, stemming from the Maison’s characteristic aesthetic quest perpetually focused on essentials.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

On the front of the watch, the eye is drawn to the depiction of the moons in the two hemispheres on a disc coaxial with the central hands and shaped like a starry dome. Its deep blue colour makes a striking contrast with the silvery hue of the dial as it performs a complete rotation in 59 days, 12 hours and 45 minutes. Such is the tempo given to so-called astronomical moons, which scrupulously respect the duration of the synodic months with a discrepancy of only 24 hours every 122 years and 16 days.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The age of the Moon is indicated around a periphery scale graduated from 1 to 29½. On this titanium dome graced with rhodium-plated moons on a blue-sky background obtained by physical vapour deposition (PVD), the meticulous care devoted to details – orchestrated in nine stages and involving nearly 56 hours of work – adds an additional original touch. The uneven surface of the moon, like the brilliance of the tiny stars, was achieved by diamond cutting: a micron-level high-precision machining process which gives faceted depth to the material that shines or sparkles differently depending on the angle from which the light plays across it.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The display of the hours and minutes of mean civil time complete with lunar cycles has been slightly off-centred upwards to enable the harmonious integration of calendar indications. Instead of the traditional pointer-type dials used for perpetual calendar indications, Vacheron Constantin's Master Watchmakers and designers opted for rotating discs. This solution adopted for a mechanism that follows the vagaries of the Gregorian calendar without any need for correction before 2100, is admittedly more complex on a technical level yet offers greater flexibility in the arrangement of the indications to ensure more convenient readings.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The semi-instantaneous display of the day and the instantaneous display of the month and leap-year appear through apertures, as does the date display. Here again, this display positioned on the upper rim of the dial is shown through a semi-circular window, but with a retrograde hand. A technical and stylistic signature of Vacheron Constantin since the early 20th century, retrograde mechanisms require great precision in the doubling of the gears used to store the energy required for the return of the indicator.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The four-part dial construction and the finishing of each fully matches the technical nature of the model. A 0.35 mm thick sapphire dome is placed on a silver-toned metal baseplate with a sandblasted finish and openworked calendar apertures. This dome beneath which the moon-phase disc turns is fitted with two ‘masks’ whose smoky appearance is achieved by metallisation. It is held in place by a curved brass ring, satin-brushed with an opaline varnish, which in turn bears the white gold hour-markers.

Back: a cosmic dimension

Indications:
- Tourbillon regulator
- Sky chart
- Sideral hour display

The likewise multi-part rear dial construction ensures the clarity and understatement of the various displays. To ensure the moon phases take priority on the front of the watch, the opening revealing the tourbillon regulator has been placed on the back. Invented at the beginning of the 19th century, this device enclosing the escapement and the balance-and-spring assembly in a mobile carriage is designed to compensate for the effects of Earth’s gravity on the isochronism of the regulator and thus ensure enhanced precision. The one-minute-rotating tourbillon is distinguished by its carriage shaped like Vacheron Constantin’s Maltese cross emblem, with its delicately hand-polished bar. To diminish the weight (hence improving performance) as well as for aesthetic reasons, the tourbillon components have been skeletonised – notably the fixed wheel which is entirely openworked.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The architecture of the dial on the reverse side also reflects a desire to create an astronomical watch with a display of sidereal time and constellations against a celestial backdrop. This timepiece paying homage to the Moon naturally had to integrate the notion of sidereal time – also known as "sidereal hour angle" – enabling astronomers to calculate the meridian of the stars. Using a fixed star in the sky as a reference point, the time it takes the Earth to complete a full 360° revolution – or sidereal day – is exactly 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4 seconds. As the Earth both spins on its axis and revolves around the sun, it takes about four minutes to return to its starting point in relation to the given star.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

A fixed dial, bearing a blue dot representing the celestial horizon, is positioned below a movable sapphire crystal engraved with the constellations, while the rim features month markings as well as five-day graduations. By performing a complete rotation according to sidereal time, this mobile disc gives the exact position of the constellations – delimited by the celestial horizon – at the time when the watch is consulted by pointing it Northwards. Sideral time is read off counter-clockwise, facing the current date on the fixed PVD-treated blue outer ring bearing a 24-hour scale along with the cardinal points.

Minute repeater

This timepiece featuring 11 of the noblest horological complications laid out in an extremely elegant manner would have been inconceivable without making it a musical watch incorporating a minute repeater.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

To create this particularly complex striking mechanism controlled by a repeater slide housed on the caseband, Vacheron Constantin's Master Watchmakers drew inspiration from La Tour de l'Île. This double-sided anniversary watch produced in a 7-piece edition for the Maison’s 250th anniversary is the most complicated wristwatch ever made with its 16 complications, including a minute repeater with a centripetal strike regulator.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This silent system also found in the Dual moon Grand Complication enables the duration of the musical sequences to be perfectly timed in order to obtain a distinct and harmonious sound of the notes played for the hours, quarters and minutes by the hammers striking two circular gongs. As an additional feature, the gongs of this repeater have been slightly ovalised to avoid them overlapping the tourbillon and without affecting their crystal-clear sound.

Calibre 2755 TMRCCQP, a watchmaking adventure

In-house Calibre 2755, one of Vacheron Constantin's major developments, was chosen to power all these functions, which are complemented by a minute repeater chiming the hours, quarters and minutes on demand. This movement has undergone major transformations over the years – notably in the realm of astronomical functions – and represents a true horological adventure.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Les Cabinotiers Dual Moon Grand Complication watch with its 774 components is perfectly in tune with this adventure that has already seen Calibre 2755 interpreted in many ways through designs testifying to the quest for elegance amid complexity. Endowed with a 58-hour power reserve, Calibre 2755 TMRCCQP beats at a rate of 18,000 vibrations per hour.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Circular satin-brushed and hand-bevelled, with a Côtes de Genève motif on the rear bridges as well as mirror-polished hammers and strike-regulator bar, this in-house movement has been meticulously finished. To ensure a smoother match with the 46 mm-diameter case in 18K white gold, it has also been entirely rhodium-plated.

As is the case with all timepieces from the Maison, this model showcases the extreme attention to detail lavished on every component, even those that remain invisible once the movement has been assembled. This quest for excellence is expressed as much in the technical and aesthetic choices and decisions as in the painstaking finishing.

Summary

A single-piece edition created by Vacheron Constantin's Les Cabinotiers department, this double-sided Dual Moon Grand Complication watch with its 11 time-related and astronomical complications regulated by a tourbillon and enhanced by a minute repeater radiates a rare degree of elegance.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The latter is expressed through the perfect legibility of the functions as well as the meticulous care devoted to the details of the decoration and finishing. The result is an understated and complex watch endowed with self-evident functions. The front thus features the precision double moon-phase display, with its age, an impressive show staged in the dial centre and complemented by the hours, minutes and perpetual calendar indicators.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The latter is notably distinguished by its retrograde date, a Vacheron Constantin technical and aesthetic signature. Astronomical indications appear on the reverse side of the watch with the time of the sidereal day – which is four minutes shorter than the civil day – and with a sky chart showing the position of the constellations in real time.

The back of the watch also features an opening revealing the tourbillon and its Maltese cross-shaped carriage. Incorporating a minute repeater chiming the hours, quarters and minutes on demand, the model is powered by Calibre 2755 TMRCC QP, whose base movement represents one of the brand's major developments.

VACHERON CONSTANTIN – Metiers d’Art Villes Lumieres SYDNEY

VACHERON CONSTANTINMétiers d’Art Villes Lumières White Gold 40mm – SYDNEY Australia 2023

 New Flagship in Sydney, Australia

Extending on its nearly 270 years of history, Vacheron Constantin opens a new Oceania Flagship Boutique.
The Flagship pays tribute to the Maison’s relationship with Australia that dates back to the 19th century.
Novelty timepieces include Traditionnelle Moon Phase, Égérie Self-Winding and Égérie Moon Phase

Luxury high watchmaking Maison Vacheron Constantin has opened its first boutique in Sydney. Drawing upon nearly 270 years of experience and uninterrupted history, the Swiss Maison continues to innovate, offering Sydneysiders and visitors to the city its complete range of sought-after timepieces, from simple to high complication creations and limited-edition models. These include the new Traditionnelle moon phase, Égérie self-winding and Égérie moon phase.

Located at 104 King Street Sydney, in the heart of the city, the three-storey boutique is a place of savoir faire and “belle haute horlogerie”, where connoisseurs can come together to explore the world of Vacheron Constantin. They experience the Maison’s first-client service, discovering first-hand the ways in which personal expression can be achieved through timekeeping accessories. The opening of Vacheron Constantin in Sydney follows the unveiling of the Melbourne boutique in 2019.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The ground level of the boutique acts as the Maison’s discovery floor, while the second floor remains reserved for VIPs. The third and uppermost level of the boutique presents a program of ongoing exhibitions. “It’s a series of agile spaces that respond to the needs of our clientele across Oceania,” says Amy Jackson Lai, director of Vacheron Constantin Oceania. “We are excited to bring a slice of Switzerland to the east coast of Australia”.

The boutique adds to Vacheron Constantin’s long-standing history with Australia as evident in 1881 when Ernest William Cooke, astronomer and meteorologist, wrote to the Maison about his 18K yellow gold chronometer open faced pocket watch.

17/19''' manual winding chronometer pocket watch in 18K yellow gold,
1928, Vacheron Constantin Heritage Collection.

Its striking mechanism caliber, automatically activated each 15 seconds, allows to timing an astronomical event by counting the striking sounds.
A precious tool, probably similar to the Vacheron Constantin watch owned by the famous astronomer Ernest William Cook.

An exclusive timepiece to celebrate Sydney: Métiers d’Art Villes Lumières Sydney

The second exclusive is a limited Sydney-edition watch, part of the Métiers d’Art Villes Lumières collection and certified by the Hallmark of Geneva. The specially created timepiece is a celebration of Sydney, inspired by an encounter between art, craft and creativity. The Métiers d’Art Villes Lumières collection perpetuates the age-old Vacheron Constantin tradition of artistic crafts.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Tradition also comes into play through the inclusion of grand feu enamelling – a champlevé technique and specialty of the house. This combines with the unusual application of hand-applied powder a technique mastered by Japanese guest artist Yoko Imai.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The lights of Sydney shine through the blue-tinted night. The golden gleam of grand feu champlevé enamel reveals the deep blue waters of the Pacific Ocean, rimming emerald green parks and gardens. Its brilliance outlines the contours of the city, distinctly displaying the location of legendary landmarks such as the Opera House, the historic port of Walsh Bay and Harbour Bridge. The gold dust boats gliding across enamelled water, the streets and the centres of activity are adorned with precious spangles testifying to the nightlife of the Australian metropolis.

The Métiers d’Art Villes Lumières collection is an invitation to embark upon a nocturnal journey above cities bubbling with creativity. Hand-crafted during more than three months and born from a mingling of artistic crafts, each dial is truly unique.

An Artistic Installation by Lisa Cahill

To celebrate the boutique’s opening, two major exclusives have been created. The first takes

the shape of a glass installation by Lisa Cahill. Inspired by the natural world and the “transitionary nature of the urban experience”, the artist says her piece creates discourse between the Australian landscape and her affinity with it. Based in Canberra, her studio will be the initial setting of the story from inception of design, drawings, creation of the glass artwork and creations in her glass kiln.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Each of the Maltese cross glass creations will be refined and heave their own creative form representing the frost and silver effect. Lisa has said she has always been drawn to glass as a medium because of its “ability to create a sense of wonder and awe.”

The sculpture mirrors Vacheron Constantin’s emblem, the Maltese Cross, and encompasses enamelling, etching, engraving, lathe work and hand-carving processes in both opaque and transparent layers of glass.
