CHOPARD – L.U.C Full Strike Blue Sapphire Edition

CHOPARDL.U.C Full Strike Blue Sapphire Minute Repeater Edition 2023

Featuring a complication that has become Chopard Manufacture’s field of horological excellence, the emblematic L.U.C Full Strike minute repeater is available in a new exclusive limited edition in blue sapphire limited to five-pieces.

In addition to the gongs of the L.U.C 08.01-L chronometer-certified calibre, the entire case, crown and dial of this new L.U.C Full Strike Sapphire model are cut from blocks of sapphire.

Measuring 42.5 mm in diameter and featuring a totally transparent intense blue colour resulting from subtly dosed chromium and rare earth elements, it offers a 360-degree view of a movement with exceptional finishes. This entire horological prodigy bears the Poinçon de Genève quality hallmark. The acoustic richness of its chime achieves an exceptional level of quality, while perfect homogeneity makes it an unparalleled timepiece combining a stunning conceptual challenge with supremely accomplished execution.

With the L.U.C Full Strike Sapphire, the L.U.C collection continues its evolution in the crystal age. In 2016, the first L.U.C Full Strike model heralded a new watchmaking paradigm, a novel way of generating and propagating the sound of a minute repeater. By using solid sapphire gongs and having the sapphire crystal serve as a resonator, as well as by making these two components into a single monobloc entity, Chopard Manufacture broke the glass ceiling. The result is incomparable tonal richness and acoustic intensity, qualities that previously earned the first L.U.C Full Strike model in rose gold the ultimate “Aiguille d’Or” award at the 2017 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève

To mark the 25th anniversary of Chopard Manufacture, its founder Karl-Friedrich Scheufele enlisted the support of virtuoso brothers Renaud and Gautier Capuçon to introduce the first minute repeater watch featuring a case made entirely of corundum crystal. A feat now continued with an exclusive, coloured-crystal model.

A sapphire heart

With this new L.U.C Full Strike Sapphire timepiece, the Maison’s watchmaking workshops once again demonstrate their mastery of crystal technology. By merging container and content, musical expression and transparency, Chopard has created a veritable horological musical instrument. Thanks to the homogeneity of the material – which is present throughout the sound propagation chain – this five-piece limited series derives the very best from sapphire and from colour.

Above and beyond its aesthetic prowess, the choice of lab-created sapphire is justified by its technical properties: derived from synthetic corundum, this material is one of the most resistant to scratches and has an estimated hardness of nine on the Mohs scale, almost as hard as diamond. Moreover, although producing a sapphire case entails considerable machining difficulties, it has the advantage of remaining unalterable over time.

A sapphire body

The 42.5 mm diameter case is 11.55 mm thick, with well-balanced proportions identical to previous versions of the L.U.C Full Strike, and which contribute to the characteristic elegance of the L.U.C collection. The bezel, caseband, crown, case-back and rear glass are all made of blue sapphire crystal. This rare model, whose absolute transparency enables the wearer to become one with the timepiece, has been created by specialised artisans mastering all the requirements of sapphire technology, from powder to finished component.

Alongside the technical challenges associated with machining transparent sapphire, blue sapphire adds an extra layer of difficulty: obtaining the intense blue colour by adding chromium and rare earth elements to the usual composition of corundum crystal requires subtle chemical dosage, in order to guarantee not only homogeneous colour, but also uniform structure, free of bubbles and haze.

These meticulous operations make blue sapphire a rare and precious material. The manufacturing process also follows strict sustainable development rules, from the energy consumed in the production of corundum crystal through to transport.

In addition to the case, the watch dial too is made of sapphire. Its distinctively cut shape enhances the indication elements essential for reading.

Absolute transparency can in fact have the effect of blurring the view and Chopard has remedied this by creating a railway-type minutes track engraved on the sapphire crystal and painted. It complements a chapter ring punctuated with rhodium-plated herringbone-shaped applied hour-markers, and black transferred counterparts. The sapphire ring is interrupted by three elements. The first is the off-centre seconds counter. The second is an applied white gold plate bearing the “L.U.CHOPARD” logo.

The third is the concentric power-reserve indicator in which two hands respectively indicate the energy remaining in the barrel that drives the movement as well as in the other powering the minute repeater.

Innovative heart

The L.U.C Full Strike Sapphire is one of the rare non-metallic timepieces to bear the prestigious Poinçon de Genève quality hallmark, covering both the design and finishing of the movement and the case.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In addition, the L.U.C Full Strike Sapphire watch inherits the latest advances with which the L.U.C 08.01-L movement is endowed. Its patented resonant sapphire structure is complemented by several innovative technical systems, four of which are patented.

In a minute repeater mechanism, the energy required by the strikework is provided each time the winding lever is activated. Here, the energy comes from a separate, dedicated barrel wound directly by the crown.
It enables the L.U.C Full Strike Sapphire to chime the most complex and energy-intensive time of day (or night) – namely 12 hours and 59 minutes – up to 12 times.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This exceptional autonomy is due to several factors. It benefits from the contribution of a patented clutch-lever mechanism that ensures that the strikework going train is blocked, to avoid losing power reserve during the information capture that controls the minute repeater.

Innovative body

This autonomy is moreover also the result of Chopard Manufacture’s experience in multiple barrels. The founding movement of the L.U.C collection – L.U.C Calibre 96.01-L launched in 1997 – actually already featured Chopard Twin Technology, whose two superimposed barrels deliver long-lasting and reliable force. Since it has an autonomous energy source, the strikework systematically respects the defined rhythm, whatever the time that is chimed and however many times it chimes.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Keen to preserve the user-friendliness of the minute repeater and to make its operation as secure as possible, Chopard Manufacture has introduced a number of innovative systems. Thus, if the barrel no longer has sufficient force to power the minute repeater, a safety mechanism blocks its release. In addition, Chopard has filed and been granted a patent for a new strikework-activation device. As soon as it is activated, the pusher is disengaged, thereby making it impossible to disturb the running of the minute repeater or to damage it.

A blend of heritage and modernity: the L.U.C collection

Since 1996, Chopard Manufacture has been reflecting the inspired vision of the Maison’s Co-President Karl-Friedrich Scheufele. Over 25 years after presenting its first movement, the Manufacture has acquired a degree of maturity enabling it to provide a range encompassing the entire spectrum of horological complications – all in-house crafted through an alliance of tradition and innovation.

From movement development to adjustment and quality control, along with finished product design, the stamping and machining of cases as well as movement components, engraving and traditional hand-crafted finishes, gemsetting, surface treatments, polishing and assembly: its workshops in Geneva and Fleurier enable Chopard to master the entire production process involved in each creation composing the L.U.C collection.

CHOPARD – ALPINE EAGLE Shikkoku Edition

CHOPARDALPINE EAGLE 41mm Shikkoku Lucent Steel™ Edition 2023

Tokyo 2023 – Chopard presents a 100-piece limited edition adorned with an original monochrome dial to enrich its sporty-chic Alpine Eagle collection. This timepiece features a SHIKKOKU (darkest shade of black) dial, imbued with Japanese codes of simplicity, zen aesthetics and sense of purity echoing the exquisite balanced proportions of the Alpine Eagle’s identity.

To celebrate the launch of this exclusive Japan-only model, Chopard welcomes a rugby player Keita Inagaki as the face of a new campaign. He is a well-known prop who figures prominently on the field. Matching the dignity, strength and elegance of the Alpine Eagle, he shares his insatiable quest with this collection: the challenge of the future like an eagle soaring up majestically into the sky of the Alps.

Chopard has chosen the Japan National Stadium as the venue for the unveiling of this new model of the Alpine Eagle collection. Like an eagle soaring over the Alps, every athlete who plays in this stadium aims for the top of the world. The National Stadium is called “Forest Stadium”, located in the grove of the Meiji Shrine, which connects the Inner Garden of the Shrine inheriting the historical greenery, to the Imperial Palace. The Stadium is in harmony with nature as the Tree of Life. It expresses the modern interpretation of the traditional “beauty of the eaves” preserved and handed down in Japanese architecture, gently connecting the architecture and the environment. The sustainable development at the heart of the Maison’s value; and the architectural design concept “Form follows function”, which is the source of inspiration for the Alpine Eagle collection; in addition, Keita Inagaki who is the top athlete and the Ambassador of the Alpine Eagle collection –– the National Stadium is the one and only venue that embodies all these things above at once.

Chopard Co-President Karl-Friedrich Scheufele welcomed Keita Inagaki to the stage to celebrate the new partnership at the ANDON Hall (the main venue), tinged with the mysterious and serene Shikkoku colour. Along with the unveiling of the new Alpine Eagle Japan Limited Edition, a specially produced short film and campaign visuals are presented. At the interview with Keita Inagaki, he talked about his impressions of being appointed as an Ambassador and comments on this new model, his own styling as one of the fashion leaders in the rugby world, and his hopes and ambitions for the future.

Beyond the exhibition space where new and representative models are displayed, there is the Stadium’s field that can only be reached by those athletes who aim for the top and have mastered their own path. The guests had a lot of fun in the stadium where you can feel the warmth of the wood, and the event of the new Shikkoku-colour model of Alpine Eagle collection ended on a high note.

Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, Co-President of Chopard, made the following comments on the Japan-only model and the appointment of Ambassador: Japan is actually the biggest market for the Alpine Eagle watches in the world. In order to express our gratitude, we decided to announce the Japan limited edition ‘SHIKKOKU’. As the name suggests, the dial is intense black. Its hands tell the time, of course, but that’s not the main theme on this watch. It’s a very bold and powerful design, and I think you’ll feel special when you actually wear it on your wrist. I finally met Mr. Inagaki today and realized that nobody could wear this watch better than him.”

“I am truly honoured to have such a wonderful opportunity. As an Ambassador of this collection, I will do my best to convey its charm to everyone. Black is actually my favourite colour. I was impressed by the spirit of Chopard’s artisans because they are particular about true black even more than black. The design of the strap also complements its strength. It’s a watch that I want to wear all the time,” commented

Keita Inagaki.

The Alpine Eagle collection of sporty-chic timepieces has been enriched by a 100-piece limited edition adorned with an original monochrome dial. It is crafted in Chopard's exclusive ultra-resistant, highly luminous, responsible Lucent Steel™, composed of 80% recycled material. The new chronometer-certified Chopard 01.15-C movement featured in its 41-mm case has been specially developed by the Manufacture’s workshops as a variation of the 01.01-C calibre.

This timepiece features a ‘SHIKKOKU’ dial, imbued with Japanese codes of simplicity, zen aesthetics and sense of purity echoing the balanced proportions of the Alpine Eagle’s identity. This exclusive model, whose design remains firmly inspired by the beauty of Nature, is sure to become a sought-after model for collectors in Japan.

A ‘SHIKKOKU’ dial: Japanese traditional beauties

A new colour makes its debut on the dial of this watch in the Alpine Eagle collection. Like Aletsch Blue, Bernina Grey or Pitch Black, ‘SHIKKOKU’ is inspired by a palette of natural colours and evokes the wonderful lacquerware coatings which are true to Japanese culture and its ancestral crafts. Shikkoku is indeed considered to be the darkest shade of black: a symbol of nature, profound mystery and tranquillity, and thus pursuing the ideal of simplicity attached to zen aesthetics.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

On this textured dial with its radiating pattern evoking the eye of an eagle, the indication of the hours, minutes and seconds provides an elegant monochrome design through tone-on-tone black hour-markers and hands – enhanced with Cool Gray Super-LumiNova to ensure visibility even in the dark. Unlike the usual Alpine Eagle large models, this dial does not feature any date indication: an aesthetic bias to ensure perfect overall symmetry and harmony.

Chopard 01.15-C Calibre: mechanical precision

This sense of balanced proportions has been made possible through a variation of the emblematic Chopard 01.01-C self-winding movement usually featured in the Alpine Eagle 41 models.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Chopard 01.15-C has been redesigned in order to remove the date mechanism, thus simplifying the dial’s look by eliminating the aperture-type date display between 4 and 5 o’clock. Visible through a transparent tinted glass caseback, the movement is certified by the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute, a label of precision and excellence.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

When fully wound, the mechanism enjoys a 60-hour power reserve. Constantly seeking to meet the highest standards of precision, Chopard watchmaker artisans have also equipped this movement with a stop-second function enabling the user to set the time to the nearest second.

Lucent Steel™: a sustainable material with exclusive properties

The latest Alpine Eagle model is entirely made of Lucent Steel™. In keeping with the sustainable approach to which the Manufacture is committed, this metal exclusive to Chopard is made from 80% recycled material. Thanks to its anti-allergenic composition, it has properties comparable to surgical steel, making it highly dermocompatible.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This alloy is also 50% more resistant to abrasion than conventional steels and has a unique hardness. Finally, thanks to a crystal structure boasting superior homogeneity, its purity enables uniquely shimmering light effects.

The Alpine Eagle collection

Devised by three generations of men in the Scheufele family, the Alpine Eagle collection is a modern reinterpretation of the St. Moritz, the first watch creation by KarlFriedrich Scheufele (now Co-President of Chopard) in the late 1970s.

With its pure and assertive design, Alpine Eagle further enriches this heritage with powerful natural inspiration. The collection embodies sophisticated and resolutely contemporary elegance characterised by a round case with stylised raised sides, a crown engraved with the compass rose, a bezel with eight functional indexed screws, a textured dial with deep hues and luminescent indications, as well as an integrated metal bracelet.

CHOPARD – L.U.C 1860 In Lucent Steel™ Salmon Dial

CHOPARDL.U.C 1860 In Lucent Steel™ Salmon Dial Automatic 2023

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In a creative gesture imbued with the innate elegance of the L.U.C collection, Chopard Manufacture draws inspiration from the first timepiece in the collection, presented in 1997, by combining the sophistication of a guilloché dial in salmon-coloured solid gold, a 36.5 mm case made of Chopard’s exclusive Lucent Steel™ alloy, as well as a finely crafted chronometer-certified movement. L.U.C Calibre 96.40-L is wound by a gold micro-rotor and equipped with the two barrels based on Chopard Twin technology.

Eagerly awaited by Haute Horlogerie collectors, this model is as colourful as it is elegant, while celebrating the Manufacture’s skills expressed through meticulous finishing duly recognised by the Poinçon de Genève quality hallmark.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The L.U.C collection has once again demonstrated its refined nature by offering a bold reissue of its very first timepiece: the L.U.C 1860, named "Watch of the Year" by Swiss magazine Montres Passion (Uhrenwelt) right from its launch in 1997. Today, a new version in Lucent Steel™ and a salmon-coloured guilloché gold dial continues the Manufacture's approach of combining respect for watchmaking tradition with innovation.

Lucent Steel™: the alchemist’s quest

For the first time in its history, the L.U.C collection draws on the luminous brilliance, resistance and purity that are key assets of Lucent Steel™, an exclusive alloy through which Chopard has chosen to treat steel as a precious metal.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Resulting from four years of research and development, this steel endowed with properties comparable to those of surgical steel, entered the watchmaking world with the 2019 launch of the Alpine Eagle collection. Today, the use of this material – 80% composed of recycled elements – in the Maison’s other collections bears witness to Chopard's ongoing commitment to responsible luxury.

The aesthetic harmony of elegant contrasts

At the heart of the 36.50 mm Lucent Steel™ case nestles an elegant two-tone dial. Made of solid gold, it features a subtle salmon hue obtained by galvanic treatment and contrasting with the white gold touches of the chevron hour-markers – whose herringbone shape echoes that of the slender, facetted Dauphine-type hands – as well as by the finely guilloched rings marking off the minutes scale, the central zone and the small seconds counter.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The dial centre is meticulously hand-guilloched in a radiating pattern surrounding the historical Chopard logo – housed in a cartouche at 12 o'clock – while the chapter ring is satin-brushed. The snailed small seconds counter is positioned at 6 o'clock in a beautiful balance of symmetry and proportions, further accentuated by the absence of date aperture which also contributes to the pared-down design.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The anthracite grey grained calfskin leather strap, with its tone-on-tone stitching, complements the refined colours and textures skilfully orchestrated by the workshops.

Poinçon de Genève quality hallmark: a guarantee of fine craftsmanship

Combining their vertically integrated approach with the validation of independent authorities, the workshops have submitted this timepiece to the scrutiny of the prestigious Poinçon de Genève. The latter guarantees the quality and smooth functioning of watches assembled in the Canton.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The L.U.C 1860 takes this label of excellence to new heights, as it is rarely applied to a steel watch. However, the rendering of Lucent Steel™, the delicacy of the dial colour and the finesse of its motifs, along with the precision rating of the movement, transcend conventions, placing this model firmly in the upper echelons of contemporary watchmaking.

Certified mechanical performance

The L.U.C 1860 timepiece is equipped with the L.U.C 96.40-L movement, whose refinement is all the more remarkable given its mere 3.30 mm thickness. This movement is a variation on the very first L.U.C calibre, which marked the creation of the Chopard Manufacture watchmaking workshops in 1996. It is equipped with an off-centre micro-rotor in 22-carat gold, whose high inertia enables the efficient winding of two barrels. Stacked in accordance with Chopard Twin technology, these barrels store the energy required for a total 65-hour power reserve.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The L.U.C 96.40-L movement drives a small seconds indication, a prerequisite for chronometer certification by the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute. Reflecting the L.U.C collection’s innate sophistication, it is also equipped with a stop-second function and a swan’s-neck index assembly.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The latter serves to carefully calibrate the active length of the balance-spring, thus enabling finer adjustment of the oscillating frequency and hence of the movement’s rate. Finally, all the bridges are carefully chamfered and adorned with a Côtes de Genève motif.
