BREGUET – CLASSIQUE 5345 Double Tourbillon "Quai de l'Horloge" Rose Gold

BREGUETCLASSIQUE 5345 Double Tourbillon Quai de l’Horloge 46 Rose Gold - 2024

 Haute Horlogerie in the spotlight

In tribute to the brand founder’s invention on 26 June 1801, Breguet introduces a horological masterpiece blending expert skills with technical sophistication. This new interpretation of the Double Tourbillon is a tribute to the artistic crafts cultivated within the Manufacture.

The sheer complexity of the 588N2 movement and its 740 components, housed in a rose gold case measuring 46 mm in diameter and 16.8 mm thick, vividly demonstrates the expertise required to create it. This masterpiece fascinates with the ingenuity of its mechanism. Viewing the watch from the dial reveals the intricate dance of two tourbillons, an integral part of the time display.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The bar of these two tourbillons is attached to a central mainplate rotating every 12 hours thanks to a particularly complex mechanism. The designers were naturally able to attribute an additional function to this component by transforming it into an hours hand in the brand's characteristic style.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Each equipped with its own gear train powered by its own barrel, the two tourbillons independently make one full turn per minute. The two mechanisms are connected to a central differential regulating the rate of the watch and, via a third gear train, driving the rotation of the entire mechanism.

The sapphire dial is equally impressive, bearing Roman numerals and an engraved minutes track. A blue varnish has been applied to these interstices, creating the impression of the chapter ring being suspended above the mechanism. The vertical flank of the caseband is engraved with 12 Roman numeral hour-markers. These are then coated with black varnish, representing the shadow of the chapter ring numerals. The timepiece is paired with a Breguet-embossed midnight blue rubber strap.

Celebrating skills

This exceptional timepiece is a wrist-worn work of art, incorporating several different artistic crafts within the same watch.

Guilloché work

In its atelier dedicated to this craft, the Manufacture has created an entirely new guilloché pattern for this timepiece: radiant flinqué, a motif visually reminiscent of regular sound waves. This decoration is applied to the rose gold rotating mainplate and to the rhodium-plated gold bridge below it. A true Breguet signature, guilloché work is an art perpetuated on almost 30 guilloché lathes, making it one of the most important such workshops in the entire watch industry.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

While the new guilloché lathes are crafted within the Manufacture, the historical ones – some dating from the 18th century – are purchased from private individuals and companies around the world who are not using them. All are restored by specialist in-house mechanics and put back into service in the workshops.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Each guilloché lathe has its own specific features and can produce different types of decoration, some straight and others circular. Guilloché artisans are trained and thus capable of executing a wide variety of geometric motifs. At Breguet, almost all watches are adorned with a guilloché pattern, whether on the dial, case, oscillating weight, mainplate or bridges.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Other decorations can be admired on the dial. These include the mirror polishing on the tourbillon cages, the sunburst pattern on the minutes track, the snailing on the differential bridge, the circular satin-finish on the gears and barrels, as well as the circular graining on the underside of the rotating mainplate.

Engraving

More than a hundred hours were needed to create the engraving on the back of the movement. The intricacy of the engraved details is an invitation to focus on the place where the Breguet brand was born. Hand-engraved by the Manufacture's artisans, the depiction features an aerial view of Abraham-Louis Breguet's workshop at 39 Quai de l'Horloge. Various techniques were used to create perspective effects on a gold plate, notably including bas-relief engraving that involves hollowing out the material. The tracing tip was used to create fine lines on the asphalt, while grey contrasts were created using black and white rhodium. These colours are also found in the galvanic treatment used to coat the bridges.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Breguet's artisan engravers have acquired an extraordinary ability to respect the brand's artistic aesthetic, while retaining their personal touch that is an essential asset in all craftsmanship. Engraving, relief engraving, and intaglio engraving are among the methods most regularly used.

Chamfering

At Breguet, every tiny part of the movement, even those that are invisible, is chamfered and polished. The new double tourbillon is no exception to the rule. A multitude of interior and exterior angles have been crafted by hand. A true token of Haute Horlogerie excellence involving over 100 hours of work on this mechanism, this method offers a pure and distinctive aesthetic finish demonstrating a precision that no machine can currently match.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The barrel bridges recalling the BreguetB” are satin-brushed and feature a rounded-off polish known as poli-berçe. Several of the techniques used by the hand-chamfers have been applied to the various components to give them an exceptional finish. These include polished angles, satin-brushed flanks, straight graining and poli-bercé, which can be admired on almost the entire movement.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Also known as bevelling, chamfering is a complex process that has been raised to an art form by Breguet. This technique, requiring great dexterity, consists in filing down the sharp edges of the various components, highlighting their outline while creating luminous shimmering effects.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The polish should have a uniform sheen, with no twists or facets. Finally, the interior angles must feature a clean line, formed at the point where the two chamfers meet. Since tuition courses for this exceptional craft have all but disappeared, Breguet is committed to training future chamfering experts in-house to perpetuate this art. The artisans use various tools including files, buffs, and sticks made of various types of wood. These are all adapted by the master chamferer to the individual components.

Q&A with Lionel a Marca, CEO of Montres Breguet:

Why is it important for Breguet to perpetuate most of the forgotten watchmaking artistic crafts?

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Lionel a Marca: If any brand should be the guardian of this realm, it’s Breguet with its 250 years of expertise... Abraham-Louis Breguet was the creator of modern watchmaking. When the brand was taken over by the Swatch Group, Nicolas G. Hayek turned the spotlight back on the guilloché technique that had fallen into oblivion. Today, the brand has one of the watch industry’s largest guilloché workshops. We also train our artisans in-house, as there are no schools for several artistic crafts. This heritage is essential if we are to perpetuate the watchmaking of tomorrow.

We are talking about artistic crafts here, yet Breguet is first and foremost a watch Manufacture that produces all its movements...

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Lionel a Marca: At Breguet, we make all our movements at our Manufacture in the Vallée de Joux. Our Hautes Complications workshop is staffed by experts dedicated to making calibres requiring a great deal of experience, such as Tourbillons, Equations of Time and Minute Repeaters. We also have an antique watch restoration workshop where our artisans must also master historical techniques. This need for excellence simply reflects our desire to honour both our customers and the history that Breguet represents.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In 1801, Abraham-Louis Breguet launched a pocket watch equipped with a tourbillon, which compensates for Earth's gravity and offers greater precision. Today, this mechanism is no longer useful for the accuracy of a watch. How do you explain the fact that it remains so fascinating?

Lionel a Marca:
The dominant factor lies in the art of horological beauty, the technical skill behind it, as well as the fascination. Observing a tourbillon in action is like watching a heartbeat. What's more, a timepiece is an object of desire, and our aim is to continue to intrigue people as well as make them dream – isn’t that a nice challenge?

Today, Breguet celebrates International Women's Day by introducing a new version of the iconic Reine de Naples. This timepiece serves as a true ode to femininity, paying tribute to the women who have made indelible marks on history, who are trendsetters and work for towards the future.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Napoleon Bonaparte’s younger sister Caroline Murat was one of these brilliant, inspiring figures. She was a woman of great intelligence and literary culture, a patron of the arts, and a collector. She took a keen interest not only in the world of art, but also in economic, social and educational issues within her kingdom, orchestrating projects such as creating schools for young girls and reforming coral factories.

The first wristwatch: imagined by a woman, created by a man

Caroline Murat was particularly fond of timepieces by Abraham-Louis Breguet and amassed an impressive collection of over 30 timepieces. At a time when ladies wore their watches as sautoir necklaces, she placed a daring and avant-garde order with Abraham-Louis Breguet, for a timepiece that she could wear on her wrist. The year was 1810, and Breguet’s founder began to work on this one-of-a-kind model: the world's first wristwatch.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

From its delivery in 1812 to its repairs in 1849 and 1855, the Breguet archives retrace the history and characteristics of this now vanished timepiece. This slender oblong creation, framing a silver guilloché dial, comprised several complications: a quarter repeater, a moon phase and a thermometer. A wristlet of hair woven with gold thread enabled the timepiece to be worn in this novel position.

A wealth of details

The Reine de Naples collection is now embraces a palette of soft colours. After pink, grey and white interpretations, the line welcomes a timepiece in mint green, the colour of hope. A range of hues to suit every wrist.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The dial of this new version, in white mother-of-pearl, features a sparkling chapter ring crafted using the snow-setting technique. Surrounded by a discreet black minutes track adorned with symbols inspired by the pocket watches developed by Abraham-Louis Breguet. The iconic Breguet open-tipped hands indicate the hours and minutes, while a pear-shaped diamond at 6 o'clock adds a touch of poetic embellishment.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Layering two shades of green gives the Arabic numerals a two-dimensional appearance. The watch’s unique number, guaranteeing its authenticity, appears between 11 and 12 o'clock. This numbering tradition dates back to Breguet’s early years and enables each timepiece to be traced throughout its existence. The inner flange and bezel are adorned with 117 diamonds, suffusing the dial with an even more luminous glow. Worthy of the greatest queens, the crown is topped with a briolette-cut diamond.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Finally, the alligator leather strap is fastened by a folding clasp adorned with 28 brilliant-cut diamonds.

An ingenious yet dainty movement

Beating inside an ovoid case measuring 36.5 x 28.45 mm, the 191-component 537/3 self-winding movement with a 45-hour power reserve is equipped with a balance spring and an in-line Swiss lever escapement made of silicon. This material possesses numerous properties, apart from being resistant to corrosion and wear, it is insensitive to the influence of magnetic fields and improves the accuracy of the timepiece.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

All of the calibre components are carefully handcrafted in the Breguet tradition, whether visible or concealed from view. The sapphire-crystal back of the white gold case reveals the platinum weight, as well as the Côtes de Genève decoration, polished screws and chamfering on the movement. The individual watch number is engraved around the gold rim.

BREGUET – Classique 5345 & 7145 DRAGON Special Edition

BREGUETCLASSIQUE 5345 Double Tourbillon DRAGON 46 Platinum CLASSIQUE 7145 DRAGON Eight-Piece Numbered 40 Gold Special Edition 2024

Breguet pays tribute to the emblematic Year of the Dragon with the unveiling of two new watches created in highest standards by its in-house expertise.

Classique 5345 & 7145
Lunar New Year 2024

A symbol of power, courage, nobility, tenacity and success, the dragon is regarded in Chinese culture as a supernatural creature with many talents... In its honour, the Manufacture has dedicated all of its skills into creating two exceptional timepieces.

 Technical skills meet savoir faire

To counter the effects of gravity on the watch movements’ regularity, Abraham-Louis Breguet launched the tourbillon on 26 June 1801 and this horological invention has been a ceaseless source of fascination ever since. Over time, different variations have appeared in the brand's collections, culminating in the unveiling of the first double tourbillon in 2006: a unique interpretation in which two tourbillons connected to a differential form, an integral part of the time display.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The rotating central plate on which the two tourbillons are mounted sets into rotation the hours hand which serves as the upper bridge for one of the tourbillons and its extension as a bridge for the second. Coupled by means of differential gears determining the mean rate and driving the rotation of the entire mechanism, the two tourbillons are nevertheless independent of each other, each making one turn per minute via its own gear train and barrel.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This fascinating mechanism is brought to life by 749-component Calibre 588N1, a hand-wound movement with a 60-hour power reserve and a 2.5 Hz frequency. The full scope of Breguet's expertise can also be admired through the sapphire crystal caseback. The allegorical decoration featuring a blend of guilloché and engraving required great dexterity on the part of the Manufacture's artisans.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

These two centuries-old arts are perpetuated at the Manufacture Horlogère nestling in the heart of the Vallée de Joux. The guilloché workshop is equipped with more than 30 guilloché lathes, some of which date back several hundred years. These are the machines that work the magic, deftly guided by the expert touch of the craftspeople who create different types of motifs by hand.

Drawing on their many years of experience, the engravers working nearby use a variety of techniques to create the varied motifs found on these timepieces. With the exception of binocular microscopes, the tools and techniques are the same as they were centuries ago.

A timepiece with many details

Today, the brand is highlighting a version in which a dragon twirls between the two tourbillons. The entirely hand-engraved gold dragon secured to the two barrel bridges is depicted clutching a pearl made of mother-of-pearl in its talons. Legend has it that this pearl possesses the sacred essence that gives the dragon its power. It is also said to represent sagacity. The creature symbolises the emperor as being one who rules his empire with wisdom.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The rhodium-plated gold rotating plate is hand-guilloché with a fan motif. The gold bridge below the mainplate features an anthracite galvanic treatment and guilloché-work with a Clous de Paris hobnail motif.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Luxury lies in the details: the Roman numerals and minutes track on the sapphire hour-circle are first laser-engraved and then coated with black varnish. The flange is engraved with 12 Roman numeral hour-markers, which are then filled with black varnish and represent the shadow of the numerals on the chapter ring. Moreover, Breguet offers each client a one-of-a-kind timepiece, as the dragon's shape and colour can be personalised as desired. The colour of the Roman numerals, the hands and the strap can also be chosen from a range of Breguet designs.

Dial adorned with artistic crafts

The full range of skills cultivated by Breguet's craftspeople is visible in this new creation. Firstly, the crimson red dial featuring different shades between the chapter ring and the centre is produced using a technique rarely exercised today: Grand Feu enamelling.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This age-old skill requires great virtuosity to master the vast palette of colours and create subtle and elegant nuances. To obtain this texture, the artisan applies a mixture of silica and oxides to the watch face. The dial is then fired several times in a very high-temperature kiln, where the enamel ignites and melts in contact with the heat. This is a very delicate operation, during which the dial could break at any time.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The dragon standing proudly on the dial is an entirely hand-engraved rose gold applique. The fantasy creature with its majestic posture keeps a constantly watchful eye on its pearl, made of natural white mother-of-pearl. The Roman numerals, minutes track and clouds are in a golden powder-pink hue. The chapter ring is punctuated by 12 discreet round gold hour-markers. Finally, the time is indicated by Breguet's signature open-tipped hands.

A highly refined mechanism

Calibre 502.3 beats inside a 40 mm-diameter rose gold case which is one of Breguet’s thinnest at just 2.40 mm thick. The 162 components of this self-winding movement endow the timepiece with a 45-hour power reserve. It is equipped with a balance-spring and pallet-lever in silicon.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The latter material has many properties: in addition to being resistant to corrosion and wear, it is insensitive to the influence of magnetic fields and enhances the precision of the timepiece. The gold oscillating weight that is hand-guilloché with a circular barleycorn motif can be admired through the sapphire crystal caseback.
