VULCAIN – 50's Presidents Heritage K2 Anniversary

VULCAIN 50's Presidents HERITAGE K2 Anniversary

This summer, Vulcain pays tribute to the 60th anniversary of the ascent of K2 made by 14 climbers from the Italian Mountain Club in 1954.

Vulcain has always been associated with sporting achievements. Alongside supporting Real Madrid in the 30s, or sounding the underwater depths of Hannes Keller in 1961, the Manufacture has also distinguished itself when it comes to conquering mountains.

Three mountain expeditions deserve a mention: the first in the Andes, in the heart of the Cordillera Vilcamba in the centre of Peru. On August 5th 1952, a French-Belgian expedition directed by Bernard Pierre and two American teams conquered the north face of the Salcantay, one of the Andes’ untamed peaks, which reaches to a height of 6,264 metres. Shortly after this achievement, Vulcain received several testimonies from this roped party highlighting the intrinsic qualities of their Cricket Vulcain watches. These were effectively part of the entire ascent, reaching a height of more than 6000 metres.

Vulcain watches stand up to the toughest conditions: As in the 1930s, marketing representatives for the La Chaux-de-Fonds brand placed their watches on the wrists of seasoned athletes.
In addition to soccer, Vulcain set ist sights on both the heights and the depths. To celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Italian Mountaineering Club in 1954, a team of 14 transalpine mountaineers had sworn to be the first to conquer K2, the mythical Himalayan peak in the Karakoram range, located on the outskirts of India, China and Pakistan. Under the leadership of geology professor Ardito Desio, 700 porters transported over thirteen metric tons of equipment to the base camp at an altitude of 5,000 meters, at the foot of this magnificent pyramid of rock and ice. On July 31, 1954, the roped party of Uno Lacedelli and Achille Compagnoni, accompanied by their Crickets, reached 8,620 metres. Only Everest is higher. One of the most famous Italian mountaineers, Walter Bonatti, was also included in this expedition. He was barely 24 years old when he spent a night at 8,000 metres with no oxygen and no tent. Some believed that survival would be impossible. But Bonatti, who paradoxically was responsible for carrying the oxygen canisters for the lead party, proved them wrong.

1954, Ascension of K2

The second noteworthy expedition took place 60 years ago. In order to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Italian Mountain Club, a team of 14 transalpine climbers swore that they would conquer K2 for the first time – that legendary Himalayan summit in the Karakorum range. Led by Ardito Desio, a professor of geology, 700 porters carried more than 13 tons of material to the base camp located at an altitude of more than 5,000 metres. On July 31st 1954, the roped party with Lino Lacedelli and Achille Compagnoni reached 8,612 metres accompanied by their Crickets.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...       FOTO

A few years later, in 1958, a team that once again consisted of Bonatti and other members of the first expedition set off to conquer Gasherbrum IV (7,980 m), a Karakorum peak reputed to be inaccessible. This time, Vulcain equipped the climbers with Crickets.

The watches from this small Swiss Manufacture achieved considerable success with these extreme climbers. Publications at the time proudly announced that these timepieces served “their owners faithfully by providing the exact time and by chiming at the right moment”.

In 2011, Vulcain paid tribute to this achievement by intro - ducing its 50s Presidents Heritage model.

Ascension of K2, the Italian route

At 8,612 metres, K2 is the second highest mountain in the world after Everest.
This expedition by the Italian Mountain Club was the first to climb K2 via the historic Abruzzi Spur – named following an attempt in 1909 by the Duke of Abruzzi up to 6,000m.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...             FOTO

The Abruzzi Spur route is the most oft used trail. Around 75% of climbers choose this route. It starts at 5300 metres at the bottom of a ridge, drops gently for several kilometres and continues up to the 8612 summit.

The longstanding ties between the Manufacture in Le Locle and the field of aviation date back to the 1950s in Switzerland, when Vulcain watches equipped pilots of the national airline company and subsequently found their way across the Atlantic. It was in 1960 that Captain Richard F. Cyr of the US Navy described his attachment to its timepiece “My small friend and I have managed to survive most everything together (…) I am reluctant to let the ordinary jeweler touch it”.

Vulcain accordingly decided to dedicate a full-fledged collection to these knights of the sky: the “Aviator” range.

VULCAIN - Nautical DLC Edition

VULCAIN - Nautical DLC Diver Regulator/Alarm Limited Edition NEW

PLUNGING BACK INTO THE LEGEND

The mid-20th century witnessed the invention of the regulator, serving to balance the pressure between the diver’s lungs and the compressed air reserves. This invention boosted the spread of scuba diving and the emergence of instruments designed to accompany sports enthusiasts.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...        BIG FOTO

In 1961, Vulcain presented one of the first diver’s watches with an alarm movement that was genuinely audible under water: the Nautical. Its strike represents a precious function which – thanks to its triple case-back serving as a resonance chamber – effectively warns divers that it is time to return to the surface. In 2013, Vulcain pays tribute to this legendary model by creating a DLC limited edition

DLC COATING

This highly durable, charcoal grey layer with a low friction coefficient consists of an atomic lattice composed of the two forms of carbon: diamond (sp³) and graphite (sp²). Diamondblack™DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) is applied using a coating process which faithfully mirrors the original surface finishes. Diamondblack™DLC consists solely of molecules of carbon and hydrogen arranged in a structure similar to that of diamond, producing a layer with excellent chemical stability and high corrosion resistance.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...        BIG FOTO

Its proven biocompatibility enables prolonged contact with the skin without causing irritation. It has a very high level of hardness, around 5,000 Vickers, compared to stainless steel, approximately 200 Vickers. This high-tech coating is used in the aerospace industry and in any application in which wear-resistance and a low friction coefficient are essential.

Vulcain - 50's Presidents Watch «Edition France»

VULCAIN - 50's Presidents  Watch «Edition France» NEW

The Manufacture Vulcain pays tribute to France in a 50-pieces limited edition of its famous alarm timepiece, the 50s Presidents’ Watch. A fine way of celebrating the long-established ties between the Swiss brand and the land of luxury, elegance and refinement.
France has always held a special place in Vulcain’s history since it was founded in 1858. Creations by the Manufacture soon achieved impressive success on this market. In 1889, at the World’s Fair held in Paris at the foot of the recently erected Eiffel Tower, Vulcain attracted attention with its rich range of simple or complicated pocket-watches. These included the “La Vallée de l’Arve” Grande Complication model with grand strike, minute repeater, perpetual calendar and moon phases that won a bronze medal.

France also played a key role in the birth of the Cricket calibre that earned Vulcain international fame. In 1943, at a time when Vulcain’s Managing Director Robert Dittisheim was seeking to develop the first genuinely functional wristwatch capable of awakening even the deepest sleeper, French physicist Paul Langevin paid him a visit in La Chaux-de-Fonds.
During a stroll through the garden, the latter assured him that of a tiny creature like the cricket could make a sound that was audible from a distance of 30 metres, a small case housing a complex mechanism must be able to match such a performance. Buoyed by this scientific support, Robert Dittisheim pursued his research that was to lead in 1947 to the launch of the calibre with twin calibres (one for the movement and the other for the alarm) named the Cricket as a nod to the insect’s strident song.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...

The Cricket watch appealed to many prominent statesmen, including Truman, Eisenhower, Nixon and Johnson – a fact that earned it the famous moniker as “The watch of Presidents” or “The Presidents’ Watch”. It was also a great success in France, even starring on the wrist of Eddie Constantine in Votre dévoué Blake, a film directed by Jean Laviron and released in 1954. Since Vulcain’s return to the forefront of the watchmaking scene, the French market has always been among the leading followers of the brand and of its new models. French retailers have also proven extremely active in supporting this renewal, and the Manufacture is keenly aware of the daily significance of their backing.

A STYLISH LIMITED SERIES

In homage to France and to the enthusiasm for the brand shown by French customers, Vulcain is innovating by introducing its first ever watch specifically dedicated to a nation. This 50-piece limited edition of the iconic 50s Presidents’ Watch features a 42 mm steel case housing the legendary mechanical manually-wound Cricket V-16 alarm movement equipped with the brand-patented Exactomatic system ensuring improved rating regularity on the wrist. Particular care has been lavished on the polished and satin-brushed finish of the case that lends a chic and vintage touch. The sunburst silver-toned dial with applied hour-markers is distinguished by its aura of elegant understatement expressed through hours, minutes and seconds hands along with a date window at 6 o’clock. Finally, the owner of this limited-edition timepiece can precisely adjust the alarm time thanks to a central hand tipped with a black arrow gliding across the graduated scale around the outer rim of the dial.

The case-back is engraved with the name of the watch, the individual series number as well as a crown of laurels – a symbol of strength, of victory and accomplishment – as well as of peace, knowledge and creativity. One also notes the choice of the colour blue for the Vulcain logo, the sweep seconds hand and the alarm markings. The sapphire crystal window provides an admirable view of the refined movement finishing (Côtes de Genève, anthracite treatment, blued screws and openworked ratchet-wheel), topped by the V for Vulcain. Each of the watches in this special edition comes with its individual certificate.

ATELIER DU BRACELET PARISIEN - ABP
Paying tribute to French expertise, tradition and excellence, the Manufacture Vulcain has chosen to associate with the famous ABP company located in Paris on the Marché-Saint-Honoré. “Leather artisan, time machine, zoo or travel agency”: the Atelier du Bracelet Parisien (ABP) is all of that rolled into one.

Above all, it is a firm dedicated to hand craftsmanship. All the straps and other products are entirely made in the Parisian workshop. Enthusiasts can choose from a vast array of hides, colours, shapes, tanning processes and thicknesses. Each strap is thus entirely hand-crafted according to the most stringent quality criteria.

Vulcain - 50s Presidents Chronograph

Vulcain - 50s Presidents Chronograph

50S PRESIDENTS’ CHRONOGRAPH STYL E, TECHNIQUE AND LEGEND

Building on a history offering a consistent blend of technical sophistication and precision, the Manufacture Vulcain is re-introducing a modern version of a single-pusher chronograph that became a legend. It was used by the coaches of the Real Madrid football club to time their training sessions, and they ascribed to it their victory in the Spanish Championship at that time. Named the 50s PresidentsChronograph, this technical watch is also available in a Heritage version.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...

Following on from the 50s Presidents’ Watch unveiled in 2010, Vulcain is introducing an exclusive new range of self-winding single-pusher chronographs. Available in two versions, this timepiece highlights one of the major horological complications, combining a sporting and technical nature: the chronograph. Better still, this new Vulcain single-pusher chronograph is inspired by a model that became a favourite with the coaches of the Real Madrid football club when it won the National Championship in 1934. Those in charge attributed a share of credit for this win to the Vulcain chronograph they had used to time their training sessions. Thus pervaded by the spirit of sport and of history, the new range enjoys strong roots further consolidated by the use of a complication presented in what is now a rare and distinguished version: the single-pusher type.

The first version, the 50s PresidentsChronograph, is entirely in tune with the aesthetic codes governing the new range; while the second, the 50s Presidents’ Watch Heritage Chronograph is directly inspired by the dial of the 1934 model. Its calibre is chronometer-certified by the COSC.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...

Celebrating the classic 1950s design codes, the 50s PresidentsChronograph features a blue, silver or charcoal grey dial curved at either end, as was typical in that era. The 12 o’clock numeral is surrounded by diamondpolished hour-markers. The dial displays two counters – a small seconds subdial at 9 o’clock and a 30-minute chronograph totalizer at 3 o’clock – in a “bicompax”* style that was much in vogue at the time. A slightly oversized window at 6 o’clock indicates the date.

Available in 18K rose gold or steel, the 42 mm case is water-resistant to 50 metres. It houses the mechanical selfwinding Vulcain V-57 movement driving the hours, minutes, small seconds at 9 o’clock, date at 6 o’clock, central sweep seconds chronograph hand, and 30-minute chronograph counter at 3 o’clock. Graced with Vulcain’s characteristic haute horlogerie finishes, such as Côtes de Genève motifs, blued screws and a rhodiumed coating, it is endowed with a 42-hour power reserve.

The new 50s PresidentsChronograph is available on a Louisiana alligator leather strap with pin buckle in 18K rose gold or steel, or on a steel bracelet.

Vulcain - 50's Presidents Herbie Hancock Limited Edition
50S PRESIDENTS’ “HERBIE HANCOCK” LIMITED EDITION
VULCAIN CELEBRATES THE BLUE NOTES OF JAZZ

Watch manufacturer Vulcain is establishing an exclusive partnership with pianist Herbie Hancock: an encounter between two legends that has found its first expression in the creation of two limited-edition 50s Presidents' Watch models dedicated to the brilliant pianist.

Herbie Hancock is a jazz chameleon who has made his way through changing styles and eras while consistently adding his own touch of musical genius. A gifted musician who played with legendary figures such as Miles Davis and Chaka Khan, a brilliant performer who has earned multiple distinctions including 12 Grammy Awards, Herbie Hancock has recently agreed to share with Vulcain his love for the blue notes of jazz through an exclusive partnership.

A specialist of mechanical alarm watches thanks to its iconic Cricket movement, the Manufacture in Le Locle is celebrating this new partnership by creating a limited-edition Presidents' Watch model. Thanks to this alliance with Herbie Hancock, the watch company is pursuing its support for the world of culture and thereby strengthening its presence in the world of jazz - the global musical movement born in the United States and which remains a perpetual source of experimentation and renewal, very much like that of Fine Watchmaking. With their unique midnight-coloured dials, the two 18K rose gold and steel limited series will provide a tasteful accompaniment for “blue mood” enthusiasts.

The case measures 42 mm in diameter for a perfect fit on the wrist, and its back is engraved with the name of the celebrated musician. The “Herbie Hancock50s Presidents' Watch is available in two limited editions: one in 18K rose gold issued in a series of 50; and another in steel in a 250-piece limited series. Each of the watches in this Herbie Hancock special edition is also accompanied by a certificate bearing his signature and authenticating the limited-edition production of each of the models, along with an album by the artist.

 HERBIE HANCOCK: AN EXCEPTIONAL CAREER

Born in Chicago in 1940, Herbie Hancock was 11 years old when he first appeared on-stage, performing Mozart's concerto n° 5 on the piano and accompanied by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Equally fascinated by both science and electronics, he graduated from university with two degrees: one in music and another in electrical engineering. This naturally eclectic mind-set drew him to the most inspired researchers in the field of jazz. Miles Davis in particular asked him to join him for sessions that would leave an indelible imprint on jazz music history.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...

Eager to explore new avenues, Herbie Hancock subsequently founded his own group, the Headhunters. Their first eponymous album became the first platinum record in the history of jazz, and the “Chameleon” hit was an instant legend. Herbie Hancock's projects were to have a profound influence on jazz and on American music in general. He is indeed considered one of the prime promoters of funk, an instigator of rap, as well as a source of inspiration for R&B artists. He even released the Future2Future album in 2001, merging technology and music. By associating computers with turntables and legendary voices, he laid a new milestone in the quest for contemporary sounds.

Alongside his professional commitments, Herbie Hancock also supports several charitable causes pursuing a social, musical or medical mission. In 2011 at a ceremony in Paris, Herbie Hancock was named UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for the promotion of intercultural dialogue.
