SPEAKE-MARIN – Art-Series Rhinoceros Titanium

SPEAKE-MARINArt-Series Rhinoceros Titanium Unique Limited Edition - 2020

ART-SERIES Rhinoceros

2020 - As Speake-Marin is aware of the 21st century’s challenges from environmental and social perspectives, the watchmaking house has launched in 2020 a few initiatives to impact the world in a positive way.

One of these projects is to launch every year an Art-Series limited edition dedicated to endangered species: part of the sales will be given to a chosen organisation, which acts for their protection.

For this first year, Speake-Marin develops a limited edition of 9 pieces in partnership with the London-based charity “Save the Rhino International”, an organisation working to ensure that all five species of rhinoceros thrive in the wild by protecting their habitat, reducing illegal trade, involving local communities and bringing experts together.

With this project, Speake-Marin contributes to the costs of protecting critically endangered rhinoceros at the Sumatra Rhino Sanctuary in Indonesia, thanks to a CHF 3,000 gift per each timepiece sold. Would you like to find out more ? Please visit the website:👉▶️ www.savetherhino.org

 SPEAKE-MARIN & ART SERIES

In 2006, Speake-Marin started to design and develop the so called “Art-Series”, a collection of timepieces that is dedicated to craftsmanship. Speake-Marin includes in the Art-series different traditional techniques such as enamelling, hand-engraving, Maki-e (Japanese art of lacquer work).

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Engraving is indeed part of Speake-Marin DNA and is corroborated within its Art-Series collection through beautiful watch dials: Skulls, Dragon or animals are magnified thanks to this technique. Speake-Marin uses both hand and chemical engraving methods, depending on the design complexity.

For this latest limited edition, the rhinoceros has been designed in our creation studio and sculpted by hand (more than 40 hours) to produce a special master stamp, which is then reproduced on each dial. The silver-plated sculpted rhinoceros is hand finished with an oxidising acid to reach this unique shade of grey.

To finish the dial, approximately 15 layers of black lacquer have been applied to reach the perfect consistency both in colour and finish.

SMA03 IN-HOUSE MOVEMENT

Since 2014, Speake-Marin has initiated a movement strategy to fully develop and assemble in-house movements within its workshop in Neuchâtel area, Switzerland. This new strategy gave birth to the “SMA” collection, which includes Openworked, closed dials and Haute Horlogerie movements.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

At first, Speake-Marin focused its efforts on Haute Horlogerie 3Hz movements (Minute Repeater and Double Tourbillon). Then, Speake-Marin developed Hour Minutes Seconds 4Hz movements, which were featured in the One&Two collection.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The SMA03 Calibre is part of the SMA movement family and introduces the first closed dial with small seconds at 1:30. The movement, which you can discover in the back of the watch, has the particularity to have an integrated micro-rotor.

 A SPECIFIC STRAP IN WOOD

Speake-Marin wanted to propose a specific eco-friendly strap for this new limited edition. The bracelet has been created from lime tree wood (tilia europaea specie), with the interior layer in natural cork.

The wood sourcing is certified 100% FSC-forests, which means that the wood comes from responsibly-managed forests that meet the highest environmental and social standards.

Why did we choose lime trees? Lime tree wood has the characteristics to be both very resistant and flexible.

SPEAKE-MARIN – One & Two Open-worked Tourbillon Edition

SPEAKE-MARINOne & Two Open-worked Tourbillon Red Gold Limited Edition 2019

Geneva, November 2019 – After the successes of the “One&Two” Openworked Hours& Minutes and the “One&Two” Openworked Dual Time launched in the last two years, which marked a new aesthetic trend for the brand, Speake-Marin now extends its Openworked collection with a new complication: a 60 seconds Flying Tourbillon.

The new SMA05 Calibre is part of the SMA proprietary movement family and follows the “Openworked collection” approach with a strong element at 1:30: the flying tourbillon. By displaying a Tourbillon cage at 1:30, the Speake-Marin objective to break-away from the watchmaking codes is achieved: Speake-Marin is the only watchmaker who positions its tourbillon there.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

It is actually a real constraint in terms of movement development since the tourbillon cage at 1:30 has to go through the time setting module. It is even more complicated than a small second at that place because the tourbillon cage requires more space in length and depth.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The tourbillon cage is covered by the iconic Speake-Marin rotor shape in red gold as a reminder of the Speake-Marin logotype. The main plate has a microblasted black finish which brings depth to the dial. The regulating organ is especially accurate, with a precision of +/- 4 second per day, which is a very good performance for mechanical movements with flying tourbillon. For this new movement, Speake-Marin chose to develop a 3HZ movement (21,600 alt/h) so as to easily see the movement alternations on the tourbillon.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Last but not least, the SMA05 Calibre displays a power reserve indicator at 7:30 (72 hours). It creates a visual balance between the barrel, the oscillating mass, the tourbillon and the power reserve, while the sharp edges of the bridges are counterbalancing the classical shape of the case. The barrel is engraved with the model name: “One&Two Openworked Flying Tourbillon”.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This movement is nestled in a new version of the Piccadilly, an evolution of the iconic case of Speake-Marin. The new case is more technical than the original allowing the straps to be integrated closer in the case, moving the crown further into the case so as to soften its aesthetics whilst maintaining its original DNA. The bezel and the case back slightly overlap the central case section altering the overall “look” of the watch whilst maintaining the iconoclastic feel of Speake-Marin. In addition, the glass traditionally set into the bezel has now been altered to a box form, reducing the overall thickness of the case and accentuating the technical aspect of the watch.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO
Revealing strong watch architecture, the One&Two Openworked Tourbillon anchors the Speake-Marin contemporary style to create “Belle Horlogerie” for those who want to wear something unique on their wrist. This new aesthetic is very masculine thanks to its material mix (gold, black finish and SuperLuminova® on the hands and indexes) and the sharp flanks of the bridges. Both hyper contemporary with the dial and classic with the case, it will please gentlemen watch connoisseurs who want to affirm their style and individuality with an audacious watch choice that will differentiate them from others.

This limited edition is proposed in 10 pieces only.

Since 2015, Speake-Marin has initiated a movement strategy to fully develop and assemble proprietary movements within its atelier in the Neuchatel area, Switzerland. This new strategy gave birth to the “SMA” collection, which includes Openworked, closed dials and Haute Horlogerie movements. Firstly, Speake-Marin focused its efforts on Haute Horlogerie 3 Hz movements (Minute Repeater and Double Tourbillon). Then, Speake-Marin developed Hour Minutes Seconds 4Hz movements, which were featured in the new One&Two design as an Openworked movement named SMA01. This movement is particular due to the small second counter being positioned at 1:30 and its integrated micro-rotor.

SPEAKE-MARIN – LONDON Chronograph Bronze 42 Edition

SPEAKE-MARINLONDON Chronograph Bronze 42 Edition - 2019

SIHH 2019 London Chronograph collection comes back with a new vintage Calibre: the iconic Valjoux 72, with two stunning bronze case models, which revive the myth.

The London Chronograph collection is from now on a recurrent watch collection concept that re-edits iconic vintage movements every year. The use of vintage movements is indeed part of Speake-Marin’s strategy to develop and to exclusively work with exceptional movements.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

For this new limited edition, Speake-Marin pays tribute to one of the most loved chronograph models of the 20th century: the Valjoux 72 Calibre. It will please the watch connoisseurs eager to see one of their favourite chronographs Calibre in a new timepiece. The Valjoux 72 is often seen as the finest manually-wound chronograph ever thanks to its column wheel and its three counters.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Issued from the Valjoux 22 base calibre, the Valjoux 72 Calibre appeared in 1938 for the first time with 13 lines. Then, it proposed a very perfect layout for great chronograph legibility:
  • Two pushers
  • Three sub dials: one for real-time seconds, 30-minute and 12-hour
Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Valjoux 72 was a very popular chronograph movement, used by some of the largest and most successful movement manufacturers such as Rolex and Tag Heuer. In 2016, the auction sale of Paul Newman’s Rolex Daytona reached over one million dollars, and is therefore an incredible demonstration of the Valjoux 72 popularity among watch collectors.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Although these calibres were produced in large quantities in the second part of the 20th century, these movements are very rare nowadays. The movement components used for the London Chronograph were stored in a safe for many years and it took time for Speake-Marin to find working pieces. Once checked, the components have been assembled, decorated and controlled within our Speake-Marin atelier.

For these two new limited editions, the London Chronograph is housed in a 42mm bronze case with a three-dimensional dial. The dial is indeed in 3 dimensions with 3 floating white counters that indicate 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock, real time 60-second counter at 9 o’clock and 12-hour counter at 6 o’clock.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The chronograph function can be easily read thanks to the orange colour code with the hours counter at 6 o’clock, the minutes counter at 3 o’clock and the central second hands.

Speake-Marin created for the first time its Piccadilly case in bronze to really echo the vintage spirit of the collection. The bronze material that is used to manufacture the case is an alloy of bronze and tin without any chemical treatment, which will generate fast oxidation and will make each timepiece unique. It will bring a natural patina that will enhance the overall London Chronograph look.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Two dial versions are available: one in blue or one in grey, both have colour gradients to give depth to the dial, a feeling which is strengthened by the 3D bronze indexes. The orange colour of the chronograph function is a tribute to sport racing counters, while the gold colour is used for the Hours Minutes Seconds function.

Last but not least, the central wheel at the centre of the dial is shaped like the Speake-Marin symbol and rotates with the hours. This central rotor is engraved with “London” and “Chronograph”, two words that appear at 12 o’clock.

SPEAKE-MARIN – Minute Repeater Flying Tourbillon Legerete

SPEAKE-MARINHaute Horlogerie Minute Repeater Flying Tourbillon Légèreté Sapphire Special Edition - Unique piece

SIHH 2019 – Speake-Marin launches its new Haute Horlogerie masterpiece: the Minute Repeater Flying Tourbillon “Légèreté”, the first Minute Repeater Carillon in the world assembled in a case which is fabricated in 100% sapphire crystal.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The new Speake-Marin Haute Horlogerie masterpiece is called “Légèreté”, which means “Lightness” in English, to highlight the sapphire-crystal case, which allows to literally dive into the movement from the top, the sides or the case back. The case is made up of three parts: the bezel, the case back and the middle section. The process by which the sapphire is made into a finished watch case is extraordinarily difficult, involving many hours of machining and polishing. The most difficult part is the case finishing where one must avoid any scratches during manufacture: the case must be perfectly transparent.

At 6pm, you find the 60 seconds Flying Tourbillon, which is held by a cage shaped into the Speake-Marin symbol. This Flying Tourbillon gives the illusion that the watch is alive.
In addition, the movement conceals a Minute Repeater Carillon. When the slider on the left hand side is activated, the Minute Repeater Carillon starts to ring and launches the dial animation: the XII index disintegration.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

From a technical point of view, it is interesting to note that there is a double safety module, which enables the setting of the time while the watch chimes thanks to the Carillon, and vice-versa. In addition, a regulator wheel regulates the Carillon speed… not too fast, not too slow… This wheel is almost silent so as not to distort the Carillon sound. The energy comes from a specific barrel dedicated to the Carillon and the dial animation so as not to disturb the watch chronometry.

Moreover, the hammers have been welded to a block which creates a sound box with the case to get a nice Carillon sound.

The Minute Repeater Carillon gives the time thanks to three hammers:

⦁    One hammer for the hours
⦁    The three hammers all together for the quarters
⦁    One hammer for the minutes

Once the time is given by the 3 hammers, the XII Roman numeral comes back to its initial position.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

On this piece, the finishing and decoration are very refined, which demonstrates Speake-Marin’s Haute-Horlogerie know-how: all the surfaces are reworked, corrected and decorated. So, the Tourbillon at 6 o’clock features a hand-finished 60-second cage that can be fully appreciated through the display back when the tourbillon is over.

The lower tourbillon cage is supported by a striking paddle-shaped bridge offering clear visual access to the surrounding gears below. The bridges and main plate are circular-grained with polished screw heads and polished countersinks.

Last but not least, the entire watch is engraved with words: on the casing girdle, on the sides and on the case back. These words reflect the Speake-Marin DNA, values and know-how: independent, respect, art piece, etc.…

SPEAKE-MARIN – One&Two OPENWORKED Dual Time

SPEAKE-MARINOne&Two OPENWORKED Dual Time Red Gold Edition

SIHH 2019 – After the success of the “One&Two” Openworked launched two years ago, which marked a new aesthetic trend for the brand, Speake-Marin now completes its Openworked collection with a new complication: Dual Time indication, retrograde date.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Then, Speake-Marin developed Hour Minutes Seconds 4Hz movements, which were featured in the new One&Two design as an Openworked movement named SMA01. This movement is particular due to the small seconds counter being positioned at 1:30 and its integrated micro-rotor. The new SMA02 Calibre is part of the SMA movement family and follows the Openworked collection approach with the small seconds at 1:30. The small seconds at 1:30 meets the Speake-Marin objective to break-away from the watchmaking codes: Speake-Marin is the only watchmaker who positions the small seconds there. It is actually a real constraint in terms of movement development since the small seconds at 1:30 have to go through the time setting module.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The new movement featured in One&Two Openworked Dual Time is therefore the SMA02 Calibre: an Openworked movement, which integrates a Dual Time indication and a retrograde date. It keeps the visual balance between the barrel, the oscillating mass and the small seconds at 1:30. It creates a triangulation which plays with the “3” figure, as it is the case on the other Openworked models.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

For this new design, Speake-Marin wanted to propose a complication for travellers, who want to know at first glance their “home” time versus the “local” time. This new model is therefore the first Speake-Marin travel watch, which targets those who are looking for the perfect watch to travel, and which will complete their travel attire, such as passport, noise-cancelling headphones, computer or notebook…

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Dual Time complication has been the “de facto” travel watch ever since it was conceived in the mid-’50s for Pan America pilots crossing several time zones at once. By allowing the wearer to monitor two separate time zones at once (“local” time and “home” time), the Dual Time watch frees its wearer from the “gruelling” mental maths required when keeping tabs on whatever is going on in your home time zone. Here, the “local” time is given by the central Hours Minutes Seconds indication, while the “home” time can be easily seen on the second dial at 9 o’clock.

BIG FOTO

This new aesthetic is very modern and masculine thanks to its colour mix (brown, silver and black) and its sharp angles of the bridges. Both hyper contemporary with the dial and classic with the case, it will please gentlemen travellers who want to affirm their style and individuality with an audacious watch choice that will differentiate them from others.
