SPEAKE-MARIN – Art-Series One & Two DRAGONS Ttitanium Edition

SPEAKE-MARINArt-Series One & Two DRAGONS Ttitanium Edition

Baselworld 2018 - Speake-Marin enriches its Art-Series collection with a new timepiece, which enhances a legendary creature: the Dragon.

SPEAKE-MARIN & ART SERIES

In 2006 Speake-Marin started to design and develop so called “Art-Series” timepieces, a collection which is dedicated to craftsmanship. Speake-Marin includes in the Art-series different traditional techniques such as enamel, hand-engraving, Maki-e (Japanese art of lacquer work).

For the first time in Speake-Marin’s history, the brand is offering a limited edition of 20 pieces with a both in-house calibre and Art-Series hand-engraved dial. For this unique limited edition, the dragon plays with the small second hand at 1:30 and it is possible to imagine some energy flow between the two elements. The dragon has been designed internally and hand-engraved to produce a special master stamp, which is then reproduced on each dial.

SPEAKE-MARIN & DRAGONS

This is not the first time that Speake-Marin has engraved dragons on its dials. Speake-Marin has in fact forged mutual bonds with Asia, and has always paid tribute to sacred animals like Dragons. The Dragon is indeed a sacred animal in Chinese culture and mythology, as the Emperor of China always used the dragon as a symbol of his imperial power and strength. The Chinese dragon is therefore a spiritual and cultural symbol that represents prosperity and good luck, as well as a rain deity that fosters harmony.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Dragons were therefore introduced to the Speake-Marin collections from 2006. Indeed, Speake-Marin’s advanced skills in engraving techniques have enabled it to create exceptional dials with intricate details. Since then, the Speake-Marin design studio has continued to design dragons, which come to life in our exceptional watches.

SMA03: IN-HOUSE CALIBRE

Since 2014, Speake-Marin has initiated a movement strategy to fully develop and assemble in-house movements within its atelier in Neuchatel area, Switzerland. This new strategy gave birth to the “SMA” collection, which includes Openworked, closed dials and Haute Horlogerie movements. To begin with, Speake-Marin focused its efforts on Haute Horlogerie 3Hz movements (Minute Repeater and Double Tourbillon).

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Then afterwards, Speake-Marin developed Hours Minutes Seconds 4Hz movements, which were featured in the new One&Two design as an Openworked movement named SMA01. This movement has the particularity to have the small seconds counter at 1:30.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The new Calibre SMA03 is part of the SMA movement family and introduces the first closed dial with small seconds at 1:30.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The small seconds at 1:30 meets the Speake-Marin objective to twist the watchmaking codes: Speake-Marin is indeed the only watchmaker who positions the small seconds there. It is actually a real constraint in terms of movement development since the small seconds at 1:30 has to go through the time setting module.

SPEAKE-MARIN – Black Velsheda Gothic Titanium 42 Edition

SPEAKE-MARINJ-Class Black Velsheda Gothic Titanium 42mm Limited Edition

Black Velsheda Gothic

2017 After the success of the two first Velsheda Gothic, Speake-Marin proposes a third version of this iconic model with, for the first time of its history in the Velsheda Collection, a black dial in enamel, in a limited edition of 16 pieces.

For this third edition of the Velsheda Gothic, Speake-Marin decided to put, for the first time in the J-Class collection, a black enamel dial above the heart of its watch. This noble material brings more radiance and elegance to the dial and is the perfect support for its Gothic decoration.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

As with the first two versions, the dial of the Black Velsheda Gothic is dressed with Roman and Arabic numerals. But instead of having only the number 12 coloured, the 4, 8 and 12 indexes are red. A subtle detail in the design of the dial is the “5”, which has in miniature the word “enamel” painted, only possibly viewed with an eyeglass.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

For the numerals, Speake-Marin chose a very specific typography. Almost Medieval in style with strong curves and points highly stylising this model. This design ethic defines and identifies Speake-Marin watches. It also brings the Velsheda back to the roots of the universe of Peter Speake-Marin.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Remembering that the Velsheda is a single handed watch. The sumptuously sculpted hand is neatly counter balanced by a pointer at one end and an arc at the other; coupled with the fine 5-minute graduations around the peripheral chapter ring. For ease of reading the time, the point of the hand is red.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

While the single hand extends across the diameter of the dial, its central hub is in the form of the Speake-Marin topping tool logo, as is the central seconds wheel sitting above it. The rotation of the seconds wheel on top of the slower moving hub of the hand creates ever-changing, eye-catching patterns, drawing the eye to the centre of Velsheda’s dial.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Finally, the Velsheda’s Vaucher calibre is an automatic winding movement. The movement dominates the view through the display-back and provides a technical backdrop for the beautifully finished rotor. Like the central hub of the hand and the seconds wheel, the rotor is in the shape of the Speake-Marin topping tool logo, a motif permeating the whole timepiece.

The Black Velsheda Gothic is a limited edition of 16 pieces.

SPEAKE-MARIN – Brown Spirit Calendar Edition

SPEAKE-MARINJ-Class Brown Spirit Calendar Titanium 42 Limited Edition

New Brown Serpent Calendar

Two years ago, Speake-Marin brought a touch of colour to its dials. This year, the Swiss brand unveils the new Brown Serpent Calendar featuring a curved gold guilded-steel date hand and multi-layered, satin-finished dial with enlarged calendar chapter ring. The new Brown Serpent Calendar is a limited edition of 28 pieces.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Several years ago, Speake-Marin revisited one of their most successful and iconic models, the Serpent Calendar, and redesign it from the ground up. While retaining the distinctive identity of the original Serpent, Speake-Marin worked on the design of the dial, of the case and of the hands. This year, the Swiss brand continues to work on the design of this watch by adding to its dial a brown snailing hours chapter ring and oversized calendar indication.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The original Serpent was the first calendar watch I made and it quickly became one of the most popular Speake-Marin timepieces,” says Peter Speake-Marin. “The idea is simple and goes back over a century to early pocket watches that used a curved hand to differentiate the date from the time indications. The Serpent Calendar now brings a fresh look to this classic design.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

All the major elements of the Speake-Marin universe are present: the multi-layered, bright white dial finds its place in a Piccadilly case, 42mm, in titanium. The Serpent Calendar indicates central hours and minutes with Speake-Marin style blued hands and the date with a bright golden sculptured Speake-Marin calendar hand. On this watch, Speake-Marin brought a touch of originality on its dial by off-setting the ring of the date at 1.30. A simple swing to rock the rhythm of the time! Also adding greater equilibrium to the graphic aspect of the dial.

Finally, as with the other models of this collection, the new Brown Serpent calendar is equipped with a Vaucher 3002 automatic movement and signs the bottom of its dials of “Swiss made” to remind its Swiss origins, whilst retaining the English name and design of its creator.

One & Two

This year, Speake-Marin launches a new watch in the J-Class Collection equipped with a new in-house movement, the SMA01: The One in red gold & the Two in titanium.

Speake-Marin presents this year a new watch, One & Two. A special name for two special watches equipped for the first time in the J-Class collection by an in-house movement.

This new watch is declined in 18k red gold and in titanium, but also in two sizes: 38mm and 42mm. It belongs to the J-Class Collection, the most classical collection of Speake-Marin.

Speake-Marin chooses to fully skeletonized the grey dial to reveal the majority of the new movement developed by Speake-Marin: the SMA01. This movement required many months of time to be developed, designed and realised by the Speake-Marin team.

The movement was kept slim by integrating the micro automatic mass flush with the bridges. Each movement carries a COSC certificate assuring its precision and reliability, accentuating the technical magnificence of this stunning calibre which is entirely assembled and adjusted by hand.

This new movement is nested in a new version of the Piccadilly, an evolution of the iconic case of Speake-Marin.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The new case is more technical than the original allowing the straps to be closer integrated in the case. Moving the crown into the case further plus softening its aesthetics whilst maintaining its original DNA.

The bezel and case back slightly overlap the central case section altering the overall 'look' of the watch whilst maintaining the iconoclastic feel of Speake-Marin.

In addition, the glass traditionally set in to the bezel now has altered to a box form, reducing the overall thickness of the case and accentuating the technical aspect of the watch.

For this dial, no numerals. The Swiss brand wanted to keep a refined design and choose to dress it with a small seconds indication at 1.30.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This is a small touch but unique to have a small seconds hand at this position, this adds a greater equilibrium to the graphic aspect of the dial when coupled with the aesthetics of the barrel and rotor.

A change from the other watches of the J-Class Collection, certainly, but respecting all the codes of Speake-Marin with its pure and clear design of the dial in the new Piccadilly case and the Speake-Marin style hands or the characteristic pleated crown.

SPEAKE-MARIN – London Chronograph Special Edition

SPEAKE-MARIN London Chronograph Special Edition NEW

This spring, Speake-Marin unveils a special edition dedicated to the early years of the British
watchmaker Peter Speake-Marin, “The London Chronograph”. This special edition will only
be available in the Fine Watch Room at Harrods, in
London during summer where it will be
officially launched.

The London Chronograph is a tribute for Peter Speake-Marin to his first steps as watchmaker
when he restored antique watches in the Piccadilly arcade in London.
After qualifying as a horologist at London's Hackney College, Peter went to Switzerland to
deepen his knowledge of watch making at the Watchmakers of Switzerland Training and
Education Program (WOSTEP) in Neuchâtel. Following his first three commercial
watchmaking positions which were short lived, due to his hunger to grow as a watchmaker, he
met Georges Somlo in 1990 and stayed in the arcade restoring all manor of early pocket and
wrist watches during 6 years.

The London Chronograph is a special edition in many ways, by its number of pieces being
made, but also by its heart. It is powered by a Valjoux 92 made during the 1950’s and 60's. As
with many mechanical calibres the quartz revolution in the late 60's cut short the life of such
calibres.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ....                 BIG FOTO

The movements used for the London Chronograph were purchased by a collector of vintage
movements and stocked in a safe for many years, waiting to be part of this special edition,
dedicated to the roots of Speake-Marin.

Today these calibres are rare, it was chosen by Peter for this project, because it is the same
type of movement that he restored during his time in London during the 1990’s.
The Valjoux 92 was a popular chronograph movement from the 1950's. Succeeding the
popular Valjoux 23 family (including the Valjoux 72), the Valjoux 92 was similarly sized at
13 ligne (29.5 mm) but used very different technology. It was an oscillating pinion design,
distinct at a glance for having two rather than three chronograph engagement wheels visible at
the back. Although both Valjoux movements are column wheel designs, the Valjoux 92 has
seven pillars versus the nine of all other Valjoux movements. Historical Valjoux chronograph
movement were used by companies ranging from Patek Philippe to Rolex and Tag Heuer,
they were one of the largest and most successful of movement manufacturers.

The London Chronograph is housed in a 42mm titanium case with a three dimensional white
dial. On the dial, the Arabic numbers alternate with Roman numerals to bring a vintage touch,
first seen on the Gothic Velsheda limited edition. The red 12 has classical connotations and
associations with early pocket and wrist watches made in England where on some classical
designs the entire dial numbers were in black with the exception of the 12.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ....                 BIG FOTO

The centre seconds chronograph is married in colour to the 30 minute recorder hand located at
3 o’clock on the dial. The two subsidiary dials for the 30 minute recorder and the seconds dial
are both seen to float on the dial and below them is found the Speake-Marin topping tool logo
wheel fitted to the hour wheel turning with the hour hand.

The Central Speake-Marin signature “Foundation” style hands in heat blued steel bring the
final touch to this very special edition.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ....                 BIG FOTO

This special edition will only be available in the Fine Watch Room at Harrods, in London
during summer as part as the Made with Love and Precision campaign. Made with Love and
Precision is a celebration of the horological offering which has established Harrods as the
ultimate destination for Fine Watches. Throughout July and August 2016, the luxury
department store will hero twenty three of the world’s most important fine watch houses
through a stunning exhibition of timepieces launching exclusively at Harrods, a dedicated
Brompton Road window takeover and innovative retail theatre. This celebration will continue
throughout the store, where extraordinary craftsmanship will be brought to the fore with
highlights including exciting product exclusives and engaging retail activity.’

SPEAKE-MARIN – Skull Face to Face DIAMOND Tourbillon Edition

SPEAKE-MARIN Cabinet des Mystères Skull Face to Face DIAMOND Tourbillon Red Gold Limited Edition NEW

If skulls are part of the DNA of Speake-Marin for more than 10 years, it is the first time that the English watchmaker combines on the same dial, the skull theme with a tourbillon, mixing art and technicality.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ....                 BIG FOTO

It is no coincidence if Skulls appeared many years ago in the Speake-Marin Collection. From an early age Peter Speake-Marin was fascinated with the subject and developed an affinity with the philosophy Memento mori.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ....      BIG FOTO

Memento mori is a medieval latin theory of reflection of mortality. It reminds us that life is short and that you have to appreciate every moment that we have. We have especially to do our best. The lyrics of this mediaeval music of the Catalan Vermell de Montserrat (1399) illustrate perfectly this philosophy:

Life is short, and shortly it will end;
Death comes quickly and respects no one,
Death destroys everything and takes pity on no one.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ....                 BIG FOTO

To remind that life if precious and every minute counts, nearly ten years ago Peter Speake-Marin decided to place skulls on the dial of the Cabinet des Mystères collection. The collection holds a special place in the Speake-Marin watchmaking world. It tells the story of our founder, Peter Speake-Marin, through exceptional timepieces. From the most creative to the most complex complications, the Cabinet des Mystères recounts the story of a modern watchmaker.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ....                 BIG FOTO

Face to Face’s intricate double gold skull engraving has been etched onto the dial using a chemical etching technique. The two skulls are face to face to illustrate a reflection in time. The bezel is also set with 36 baguette diamonds (2.16 carat) an association with eternity, “diamonds are for ever”.

The Magister Tourbillon at 6 o’clock features a hand-finished 60-second tourbillon. Turning the tourbillon over, the movement featuring hand-finishing can be fully appreciated through the display back. Offset on the main bridge is the noble platinum micro-rotor, its strong and sober aesthetic counterbalanced by the intricate complexity of the tourbillon.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ....                 BIG FOTO

The lower tourbillon cage is supported by a striking paddle-shaped bridge offering clear visual access to the surrounding gears below. The rhodium-finished German silver bridges and main plate are circular-grained with polished screw heads and polished countersinks. Technical details are engraved and gilded on the bridges either side of the platinum rotor.
