Parmigiani Fleurier – TORIC Hemispheres Retrograde Steel Blue

Parmigiani FleurierTORIC Hémisphères Rétrograde Steel Blue 2021

The Distinguished Traveler

A one-of-a-kind expression of a traveler's watch, the Parmigiani Fleurier Toric Hemispheres Retrograde Steel Blue is a statement of rarity and taste. The blue guilloché dial and unique complication defy time and shed the background noise of the world. Modern, practical and sophisticated, it speaks to those who understand what refinement means, and who expect more from a dual time zone watch.

As Parmigiani Fleurier celebrates the 25th anniversary of its creation, a new interpretation of the brand's dual time zone watch comes to life. The Toric Hemispheres Retrograde Steel Blue features a 42.8 mm steel case, with the Toric's collection signature hand-knurled bezel and a deep blue guilloché dial. Its motif is called “pomme de pin”, or “pinecone”, a testament to Parmigiani Fleurier's attachment to the natural laws of beauty.

The guilloché pattern has been etched into the metal by a rose-engine, which is a hand-operated machine dedicated to dial engraving. Its in-house caliber features an asymmetrical retrograde date and a second time zone with fully independent hours and minutes, making it the perfect elegant traveler's watch.

In the Details

The Toric Hemispheres Retrograde Steel Blue is the sum of its details. The various levels of the Toric's steel case create a gentle stepped slope along polished layers. The pinecone guilloché radiates along complex lines, captures the light and highlights the deep blue dial shade. The new, thinly openworked hour and minute hands accentuate their javelin shape.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The slight difference in size between the crowns. The grain d'orge guilloché on the 22ct solid gold rotor. The exquisite finishings, beveling and graining on the PF317 movement. This timepiece is a testament to the ingenuity, elegance and sense of contemporary watchmaking of Parmigiani Fleurier.

Inside Parmigiani

True to the fundamentals of design composed by founder Michel Parmigiani and the inspiration he draws from the Golden Ratio, the Toric collection is rooted in the classical canons of beauty as defined by classical Greek culture. The knurling on its bezel, applied by cold-working steel into a grooved pattern, stems from the flanks of Doric columns. The outline of its lugs is based on the ratios provided by the Fibonacci sequence, which drives the growth and shape of living creatures. The guilloché patterns on the dial and rotor originate in Parmigiani Fleurier's core imagery, based on the observation of nature.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The dial's layout follows the fundamental laws of symmetry, up to a point. Upon closer examination, it is organized along slightly off-centered lines. Its crowns, its movement, its date, and the size of its subdials all rely on a non-classical blueprint. And so does the way it accomplishes its secondary function: the display of a second time zone.

In the Shapes

The size, angles and position of its crowns give it away: the Toric Hemispheres Retrograde Steel Blue rests on an unconventional positioning of the movement. It is comprised of a base movement, which keeps and tells time with central hands, and provides power to a complication module. The latter is larger and encloses the base movement in an off-centered position.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This explains the idiosyncratic angle of the main, larger crown, located at 3:30. The second, slightly smaller crown at 2 o'clock, drives the second time zone module, and is also placed at an unusual angle. The Toric Hemispheres Retrograde Steel Blue case is indeed an exercise in asymmetry. It may seem round from above, but its flanks are steeped, narrower near the arm and wider near the bezel. This makes the 42.8 mm polished steel case a better, more comfortable fit on the wrist.

At Heart

The self-winding Caliber PF317 features two understated yet highly sophisticated complications. One is its retrograde date display. Instead of accomplishing one complete circle after another, it travels from 1 to 31 along a 240 degrees arc, then leaps backwards to restart its course.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This jump is instantaneous and reflects the level of accomplished watchmaking that went into developing this function. The other rare feature of Caliber PF317 is the specifics of its second time zone.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO
Most GMT timepieces have two different hour hands and one single minute hand. Some go as far as displaying distant hours and minutes in a separate subdial for better readability but fail to give the minute hand real independence. The Toric Hemispheres Retrograde features hour and minute hands located in a subdial at 12 o'clock, which are entirely autonomous from the central, main time display.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This allows the accurate display of time zones such as Iran (UTC + 3:30), the UTC + 8:45 and UTC + 10:30 areas of Australia, but mostly that of India and its 1.3 billion inhabitants, all of which live on the UTC + 5:30 time zone. Because contemporary elegance is also about inclusion, and Parmigiani Fleurier watchmaking is about being thorough.

Parmigiani Fleurier – TONDA GT Steel Silver Automatic

Parmigiani FleurierTONDA GT Steel Silver Automatic Limited Edition

 New Tonda GT Line
The manufacture reimagines its Tonda collection to create a sportier, everyday watch

Following the successful launch of its first ever Hijri calendar wristwatch, the Tonda 1950 Tourbillon Double Rainbow and the Toric Tourbillon Slate, Parmigiani Fleurier is proud to announce the new Tonda GT. The Maison’s dress watches have long been revered among collectors for their elegance and fine craftsmanship, the result of its in-house manufacturing prowess combined with Michel Parmigiani’s master watchmaking talent and commitment to excellence.  This commitment continues in this new introduction, a line designed to appeal to the modern gentleman looking for a watch he can wear on every occasion.

Four distinct sporty, yet elegant designs will kick off the release of the Tonda GT in polished and satin-finished stainless steel or 18-ct rose gold, embodying Parmigiani’s years of expertise and design ethos following golden ratio parameters. The case shape is inspired by the Tonda Chronor watch, which was awarded the Chronograph Watch Prize from the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève in 2017. Parmigiani Fleurier worked with watch designer, Dino Modolo, to reinterpret its design codes, resulting in a reimagined case with updated lugs and an integrated bracelet ergonomically designed for ultimate comfort. Its fluted bezel recalls another Parmigiani Fleurier icon- the Toric collection- and the dials are finished with traditional “clou triangulaire” guilloché. All watches are available on a polished and satin-finished bracelet or on a rubber strap with a motif that recalls the finishing on the dial.

The Tondagraph GT Black is powered by the PF043 automatic caliber and combines two of watchmaking’s most useful complications- an annual calendar and a chronograph. This is an uncommon combination and once again Parmigiani Fleurier fills a void in the watchmaking world by presenting them together at a level of quality seldom rivaled, and yet, with an exceptional price.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The dial displays a wealth of information and remains legible: it has delta-shaped hands with black luminescent coating indicating hours and minutes, a small second, two subdials for the chronograph function, and a big date aperture at 12 o’clock. To draw attention to the annual calendar function, the date and month are displayed in a vibrant orange color. This impressive watch is water resistant to 100m, has a screw-down crown, a 45-hour power reserve, and is finely finished with Côtes de Genève stripes visible through the open caseback. The Tondagraph GT Black is limited to 200 pieces.

Three additional models will accompany this new launch, the Tonda GT Black, the Tonda GT Silver and the Tonda GT Rose Gold Blue. The beauty of the guilloché decoration shines through on these dials, which have a big date aperture at 12 o’clock and a small seconds subdial at 6 o’clock.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

They are powered by the PF044 automatic movement, which is finely finished, has a power reserve of 45 hours, and is water resistant to 100m. The 18-ct rose-gold model is particularly stunning when paired with its sporty blue rubber strap matching the dial and the Tonda GT Steel easily transforms into a sportier watch when paired with its black rubber strap.

From classic to sporty, these watches allow today’s man to easily transition from a day full of activities to an elegant evening.  The Tonda GT Rose Gold Blue is limited to 150 pieces, while the steel models in black or silver are limited to 250 pieces each.

This is yet another step forward for Parmigiani Fleurier as it continues to evolve and innovate,” says Davide Traxler, CEO of Parmigiani Fleurier. “The new Tonda GT line, with its more casual shape and attractive price point, reflects current market needs and is, at the same time, distinctively Parmigiani.

Parmigiani Fleurier – TONDA Métropolitaine 36 "Reine de Mai" Automatic Edition

Parmigiani FleurierTONDA Métropolitaine Rose Gold 36 "Reine de Mai" Automatic Limited Edition 2020

Parmigiani Fleurier Launches New Tonda Reine de Mai
The new watch expertly marries
mechanical watchmaking and métiers d’art

Parmigiani Fleurier continues to showcase its dedication to métiers d’art and high watchmaking with the launch of the Tonda Reine de Mai collection. Inspired by the bucolic landscape in Switzerland surrounding its manufactures and the flowers found there, it combines Parmigiani Fleurier’s commitment to in-house manufacturing, fine finishing, and artistry. Nature and the beauty of the golden ratio are enduring sources of inspiration, and the Manufacture uses a wide array of artistic techniques to bring them to life in this release, including hand-chiseling, hand-diamond-setting, hand-polishing, hand-sandblasting, and marquetry.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Tonda Reine de Mai features a beautiful bouquet of mother-of-pearl, rose gold, and diamond-set flowers, akin to the snow-white Daisy May buds often seen into late Summer. Machined to achieve their perfect shape, they are finished by hand before being placed atop a white mother-of-pearl dial comprised of 23 different marquetry elements. The six mother-of-pearl flowers are particularly challenging to decorate, as the material is quite delicate and fragile. The base of each flower is sandblasted by hand; then, each petal is polished and engraved by expert artisan hands resulting in varied matte and polished finishing that give more depth and dimension.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The dial features an additional six Daisy May flowers, three in rose gold with alternating polished and engraved petals, and three in white gold and handset with 117 diamonds. This brilliance and texture give subtle depth to the unique dial making it seems as if the flowers overlapped like they would in nature. Each dial takes 24 hours to craft and requires the work of many artisans skilled in different métiers d’art.   This version is limited to five pieces, and each dial is slightly different as the bouquet is placed at different angles on each one.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Tonda Reine de Mai is powered by the PF310 automatic movement, which Parmigiani Fleurier created in 2014 in its vertically integrated manufacture.  It adheres to the strict codes of craftsmanship and finishing that the atelier is revered for, as well as Michel Parmigiani’s penchant for creating a secret for the wearer. The movement is impeccably finished, and features signatures like Côtes de Genève stripes, perlage and beveled bridges. For the first time, it features a 22K gold rotor that is as highly decorated as the dial and, with 20 hours of work required for each one, it takes nearly as long to create.   It is hand-chiseled in a delicate motif that accentuates four mother- of-pearl Daisy May flowers, a precise, time-consuming technique that is rarely seen on a rotor.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO
The flowers are crafted with the same methods as those on the dial, featuring sandblasted and polished surfaces, as well as engraved details, all done by hand.   It is a true secret for the wearer and it illustrates Parmigiani Fleurier’s dedication to excellence and the level of attention to detail paid to every element of a timepiece, even those rarely seen.  This stunning rotor means the entire watch is like a jewel, and it is clear that each component was designed to be beautiful from every angle.  While beautiful, the movement is still robust, revered for its accuracy. The watch is also water resistant to 30 meters and has a power reserve of 50 hours, expertly uniting mechanical watchmaking and métiers d’art.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO
The bezel, lugs, and bracelet are fully diamond set with the highest-quality F-G near colorless, and internally flawless and VVS- stones, not often seen in watchmaking.  The 36mm rose gold case features a crown with a white opal cabochon; it is polished and set with 70 diamonds totaling 2.09 carats, while the bracelet is meticulously set with 906 diamonds totaling 9.22 carats.  The bracelet is beautifully integrated to the case thanks to its teardrop- shaped lugs, a Parmigiani Fleurier trademark, and was carefully designed to ensure great comfort.

Parmigiani Fleurier – Tonda 1950 Moonbow "GALAXY"

Parmigiani FleurierTONDA 1950 Moonbow TOURBILLON Gold SET RAINBOW Blue AVENTURINE "GALAXY"

TONDA 1950 MOONBOW
A celebration of the lunar rainbow by Parmigiani Fleurier

A flying tourbillon shines amid an aventurine sky, adorned by a gem-studded rainbow to make up the ultra-thin Tonda 1950 Moonbow, a new timepiece presented by
Parmigiani Fleurier.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

« Whoever learns to observe acquires art. » These words, taught to young Michel Parmigiani by his father, summarize the philosophy of the Parmigiani Fleurier manufacture. The Tonda 1950 Moonbow draws inspiration from two phenomena only apparent to a careful observer and re-imagines a lunar rainbow, or moonbow, on the bezel and a spiral galaxy on the dial.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Its flying tourbillon is reminiscent of a spiral galaxy and dances amid celestial beings on an aventurine sky, carefully placed at seven o’clock, a nod to Michel Parmigiani’s birth on December 2, 1950 at 7:08 am. The development of an ultra-thin tourbillon movement is a challenge for any watchmaker.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Parmigiani Fleurier found a solution by integrating a platinum micro-rotor into the plate of the movement, resulting in a caliber only 3.4 mm thick. In addition, it is hand-finished with the most admirable decorations in the brand’s manufacture.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This magnificent example of mechanical engineering is further highlighted by a bezel featuring a colorful array of precious stones representing a moonbow, a nocturnal weather phenomenon rarely seen. Incredible care went into the selection of the finest stones, each in the perfect hue, to offer a truly gradient rainbow, with subtle changes in between colors.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The meticulous art of setting them required dozens of hours of painstaking and precise craftsmanship. Blue, pink, orange and yellow sapphires, rubies, tsavorites, and amethysts make up the 40 baguette-cut gemstones seen on the bezel and weighing 2.59 carats.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

When Michel Parmigiani founded his restoration workshop in 1976, he did not imagine that, 20 years later, it would be at the heart of a watch brand bearing his name. Parmigiani Fleurier’s achievements continuously inspired by lessons of the past, and offer new solutions to historical, technical challenges.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The restoration of a songbird cage, with fountain and flute sets, dating from the early 19th century, is a great example. The cage is suspended in the air by a clock on its base and features a dial that can only be seen from below. According to historical records, aventurine glass was once used to decorate the panels of this clock but went missing in the past and was replaced by blue metallic paint.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

As a result, and in order to avoid similar damage in the future, Michel Parmigiani decided to use this beautiful material for its dials only. The sapphire crystal acts as its keeper and protector.

The Tonda 1950 Moonbow is available with a red, blue or gold Hermès leather strap.
