Leveraging the remarkable expertise in chronograph development of the 165 years old Manufacture Minerva, Montblanc has added a new face to its Montblanc Unveiled Secret Minerva Monopusher Chronograph, this time executed in distressed steel.

This limited edition of 88 pieces launched at Watches and Wonders 2023 renders the model a more contemporary look and pushes the limits of aesthetic and technical excellence even further.

A Limited Edition Speciality With Incredible Details Inside Out

The latest execution of the Montblanc Unveiled Secret Minerva Monopusher Chronograph in distressed steel results from a unique treatment of the 43mm stainless steel case with a black coating. Manual washing and brushing of the material with quartzite serve each timepiece’s unique patina and appearance.

This new iteration launched at Watches and Wonders features a white gold fluted bezel which derives inspiration from Minerva’s first fluted bezel dating back to 1927, further enhancing the refinement of the timepiece. The watch is paired with a black nubuck alligator strap on which the triple-folding steel clasp also adorns a distressed look.

The watch case back is engraved with an image of the historic Minerva Manufacture.

The Monopusher Chronograph – A Remarkable Technical Feat

To highlight at the center stage of the timepiece, all the incredible hand-finished components of the historic manual-wound Minerva MB M16.29 movement, the entire caliber was inverted.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This first-of-its-kind feat for a Minerva movement in the history of the watch industry created unique challenges and a gear train of 21 additional components was added to the already existing 252 movement parts to enable the hands to turn in the right direction post caliber inversion.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The entirely hand-made movement is crafted by one watchmaker from start to finish. Displaying all the mechanical action on the dial side of the watch reveals the magic of the chronograph action, making it an object of desire for watch lovers who wish to admire the movement without altering their timepieces.

And just for fun, the Maison has turned the last digit of the reference number upside down to represent this change, so MB M16.29 becomes MB M16.26.

Turning a movement over sounds simple, but it is a technical feat as the direction of the hands also has to be reversed. The MB 16.29 calibre was one of the only movements in Montblanc’s stable of chronographs where this could be achieved and reversing the time required the addition of 21 components, making this more than an aesthetic feature, but a truly technical one too.

And just for fun, the Maison has turned the last digit of the reference number upside down to represent this change, so MB 16.29 becomes MB 16.26👆.

In 165 years of Minerva history, this has never been done before. It is surprising when you think of how many watch lovers remove their chronographs to admire the movement through the case back. Well, now they don’t have to!

An Interrupted View Of The Hand-Finished Movement, Better Than A Dial

Immediately perceived upon view through the sapphire crystal, the depth of the chronograph caliber layers, the detailed level of finishing on the sanded German silver movement, and the beauty of the bridges and plates that have been coated with anthracite ruthenium are there to be cherished by the wearer.

Upon scrutiny of the motion works keen observers will be able to notice the Maison’s unique snailed diamantage coquille motif and the thorough polishing featuring sharp inner angles of the components.

Signature Minerva Movement Design

The movement components are designed with signature traits of Minerva design, such as the distinctive Minerva arrow and the Maison’s “V”-shaped bridge are also on display.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Minerva arrow is a tribute to the Roman Goddess who is always depicted with her arrow-tipped staff in hand, and the unusual “V”-shaped bridge comes from the view of the mountains seen from the watchmakers’ window in Villeret, a sight that has been a constant since the founding of the workshop in 1858.

A Timepiece Without Distractions

Consistent with the high-level finishing and complicated caliber design, the timepiece fosters a top-notch functional appeal as well. Unrivaled attention to detail has been paid to the chronograph time indications with an open-worked 30-minute chronograph counter, an open-worked small seconds display, and elegant hands and indexes featuring Super-LumiNova® coatings for better legibility.

This Montblanc Unveiled Secret Minerva Monopusher Chronograph Limited Edition launched at Watches and Wonders celebrates the heritage crafts while presenting the same in a more contemporary package for watch aficionados to cherish!

MONTBLANC – Star Legacy Orbis Terrarum Worldtimer

MONTBLANC Star Legacy Orbis Terrarum Worldtimer Automatic 2022

Montblanc Introduces New Star Legacy
Orbis Terrarum timepieces innovative Worldtime for the elegant traveller

Explore the world with a Manufacture world timer like The Orbis Terrarum, a magical blend of style and functionality. It shows the current time in all 24 time zones at a glance, while its design takes inspiration from the Minerva pocket watches of the 19th and 20th centuries. The world map on the dial is coated in rose gold, and the in-house MB 29.20 is housed in a 43mm stainless steel case.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The model itself was incepted back in 2014 and has seen three previous configurations – a blue dial in steel, a brown dial in rose gold and a green dial United Arab Emirates limited edition. Recently, Montblanc released their newest addition to the Star Legacy Orbis Terrarum line in a handsome gray and gold dial combination.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Montblanc Star Legacy product line takes its inspiration from Minerva’s heritage and the company’s pocket watches that were made during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Orbis Terrarum comes from Latin, meaning “globe”, “earth”, and “world”, providing the inspiration for the Montblanc Star Legacy Orbis Terrarum. The timepiece is powered by an automatic movement equipped with a Manufacture complication.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The idea is to propose a worldtime function, simple to set, read and easy-to-use in an intuitive way, combined with an elegant aesthetic. Once set, it indicates all 24 time zones at a glance and shows whether the cities are in the daytime or night-time. While travelling, the timepiece is easy to set thanks to a single pusher. The dial is composed of an upper sapphire crystal rotating disc with applied 3-dimensional rose gold-coated Northern Hemisphere map and meridians surrounded by a ring depicting the 24 cities of the 24 time zones.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Each of the Star Legacy Orbis Terrarum watches, including the latest version, is housed in a modern 43mm case with an exhibition caseback highlighting the brand’s caliber MB 29.20 automatic movement. The MB 29.20 offers hours, minutes, a world time indication and a day and night display.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The most exciting aspect of the new Star Legacy Orbis Terrarum is the unique color scheme. Here, the dial consists of two layers. The bottom or base layer lays the foundation with a rotating, split color disc in light and dark gray, featuring a guilloche pattern and indicating day or night hours. Atop that is the upper disc, which is constructed from transparent sapphire crystal with applied outlines of the continents from the vantage point of the North Pole. The rendering of the continents and meridians appears in rose gold, which really pops on the gray backdrop.

While the new Star Legacy Orbis Terrarum offers a luxurious dress watch feel and impressive functionality, it will only set you back $7,000. The model is available today on Montblanc’s website and in all Montblanc boutiques worldwide.

Montblanc Markmaker Reinhold Messner is among the world’s most acclaimed mountaineers.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

He was the first man to climb all 14 of the world’s peaks and was the first climber to undertake a solo ascent of Mount Everest without supplemental oxygen.

Now in his late seventies, he has passed his passion and baton on to his son Simon.

Passing the Passion and the Ice Peak

Simon Messner was born on 8th November 1990 and is the son of Reinhold Messner. Along with his three sisters, he has been mountaineering since a very young age.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Simone Messner © Montblanc

Like his father, he shares a passion to preserve the tradition of climbing, taking all necessary measures to protect the mountain environment by using as little equipment as possible and having never used supplemental oxygen on his ventures.

Simone Messner © Montblanc

Many different goals can be set while mountaineering, but for Simon, the most important thing is the experience gained.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The idea of racing to reach all of the world’s summits is not what drives him the most, it is more about being as close as possible to the mountain in the purest sense.

Simone Messner © Montblanc

To underline his respect for mountaineering and the environment, he will ascend the Mont Blanc in August 2022, going back to where it all started for Montblanc, with the Montblanc 1858 Geosphere 0 Oxygen LE1786 strapped to his wrist.

Simone Messner © Montblanc

He will set off from France’s L’Aiguille du Midi and climb via Mont Blanc du Tacul and Mont Maudit, to reach the Mont Blanc a route that is mapped out on the case back of this limited-edition timepiece using Montblanc’s three-dimensional laser engraving technique that is so realistic, it resembles a photograph of the Mont Blanc at sunset.

In-Boutique VR Experience

In addition to ascending the Mont Blanc, Simon will be documenting his adventure and filming the final stretch to the summit.

Montblanc customers will be able to join him in the brand’s boutiques and witness this incredible feat with virtual reality glasses, giving them the incredible feeling of being on the mountain with him.

Zero Oxygen

Simon will be testing the Montblanc 1858 Geosphere 0 Oxygen LE1786 and its zero-oxygen construction all the way up to the 4,810-metre summit.

Simone Messner © Montblanc

This is only the second model to be devoid of oxygen, after the Montblanc 1858 Geosphere Chronograph 0 Oxygen LE290.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The exclusion of oxygen has several benefits for explorers who need their equipment to work in the harshest environments. Zero oxygen inside the movement not only eliminates fogging, which can occur with drastic temperature changes at altitude, but also prevents oxidization.

Simone Messner © Montblanc

Without oxygen, all the components last far longer and will provide greater precision over time.

Blue Glacier Pattern Dial

The Montblanc 1858 Geosphere 0 Oxygen LE1786 is adorned with the manufacturer’s new blue glacier pattern dial. The Maison’s designers found inspiration in the glacial lakes of the Mont Blanc Massif during a trip to the Alps.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Ascending via the Chamonix Valley to the Mer de Glace (Sea of Ice), they were captivated by the texture of the glacial ice with its interlocking network of crystals that have been frozen in time for millennia.

Research and Development on the Mer de Glace

Full of ideas, they returned to the Manufacturer to try and figure out a way of translating what they had seen onto the face of a watch.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Simone Messner © Montblanc

This was no easy feat as not only had it never been done before by Montblanc, but a watch dial measures a mere 0.5 mm in height, making it very difficult to create the illusion of looking into the depth of a glacier.

The Iced Sea Frozen Dial

After several trials, the Maison found a technical solution to create an impression of genuine depth and luminosity. The dial makers employed an almost-forgotten ancestral technique called gratté boisé as the base.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The result captures Montblanc’s spirit of exploration, both in terms of the adventures the watches are made for, but also the way in which they are designed and created.

All the Details

The timepiece comes in a 42mm bronze case with a bi-directional knurled ceramic bezel with cardinal points.

Like with all Montblanc 1858 Geosphere models, both the Northern and Southern hemispheres are represented with two three-dimensional globes that turn anti-clockwise and include a day & night indication so that the wearer can see what time it is across the Earth with a simple glance.

There is also a date at three o’clock and a dual time indication at nine o’clock.
