MONTBLANC – Heritage Small Second Edition

MONTBLANCHeritage Small Second Steel 39mm Limited Edition 38

Inspired by Minerva timepieces from the 1950s, Montblanc discovers a hidden box of original Minerva MB M62.00 calibers from 2003. Only 38 movements were discovered in the archives of the Manufacture in Villeret (Jura mountains, Switzerland) and they now equip the new Montblanc Heritage Small Second Limited Edition 38. These timepieces feature all the codes of fine watchmaking with a pure, classic, vintage design.

For the first time, this rare limited edition timepiece bears the name of Minerva on the dial in the form of a secret signature, which will only occur this one time, making this a true Heritage timepiece for collectors and watch aficionados.

Heritage Small Second Edition 38

The Montblanc Heritage Small Second Limited Edition 38 is a very special timepiece which pays tribute to Minerva’s history with the unveiling of the historical Minerva movement, the manually wound calibre MB M62.00. It is combined with a 39mm stainless steel case, a distinctive lacquered two-tone salmon dial, featuring a Minerva secret signature, and a matching grey Sfumato alligator strap, enhancing the pure classic vintage design.

The historical calibre MB M62.00 was inspired by the Pythagore calibre from 1948 with its very recognizable geometric shape. It was reinterpreted in 2003 with more classical shapes and high-end finishings. The MB M62.00 indicates the hours, minutes and small seconds at 6 o’clock.

The movement features a large balance wheel beating at a low traditional frequency of 18,000 A/h (2.5 hertz), allowing an ample moment of inertia. The regulating organ is equipped with a double adjustment system: Firstly, it includes a hairspring positioning system with a stud that allows the watchmaker to center the hairspring by moving the entire balance system to the balance cock. Secondly, a hairspring active length regulator index system (raquette), with a swan's neck spring bearing the Minerva arrow, is positioned on the end. The iconic Minerva arrow can also be found asan engraving on the main plate.

The view of this hand-wound mechanical movement reveals the high level of finishing that demands experience, skill and dexterity. The components, visible or not, are hand-decorated with bevelling, chamfered edges, circular graining on both sides, and grained and polished surfaces. This know-how can be admired on the rhodium-coated, German silver main plate that features circular graining and hand-chamfered edges; on the bridges which are decorated on all sides, beveled by hand and manually-embellished with Geneva stripes (Côtes de Genève), and also on the wheels which are plated with gold and havefaceted arms.

Particular attention has been paid to the dial. Following the codes of the Heritage product line, the timepiece is composed of a refined, two-toned, salmon-colored dial that has been lacquered for a distinctive aesthetic and domed. Paying tribute to the history of the Manufacture, and for the very first time, a Minerva secret signature has been added between four and five o’clock, making it a very special limited edition. A small second counter with “azuré” (circular guilloché) finishing is set slightly lower than the main dial to provide greater contrast.

Other details include curved Dauphine-shaped hands that follow the domed shape of the dial; black rhodium-coated applied indexes; and Arabic numerals and dots which have all been coated with white Super-LumiNova, a first in the Heritage collection. A precise railway track (minuterie)in blue completes the overall design and provides better readability.

The Montblanc Heritage Small Second Limited Edition 38 comes with a fully polished stainless steel case with curved horns and is adorned with a domed box-shaped sapphire crystal glass with antireflective coating and an open sapphire crystal case back, enhancing a special “Historical Minerva movement” engraving. This edition is limited and numbered. Each timepiece is entirely crafted and assembled from A to Z by the same master watchmaker at the Montblanc Manufacture in Villeret, making each timepiece truly unique.

Montblanc - A true watchmaker since 1858

Montblanc Villeret’s watchmaking tradition began in 1858 when Charles-Yvan Robert founded the Minerva Manufacture in the Saint-Imier valley.

The Manufacture progressively gained international recognition for its precision timepieces, becoming a leading specialist in the fabrication of professional watches and stopwatches.

Minerva is mostly renowned for its chronograph production throughout the 20thcentury.  In particular, the legendary calibre 19.09 (19 lines / launched in 1909), which was the first to feature the recognizable V-shaped chronograph bridge. Several patents for precision timers were also filed during this period, attesting to the Manufacture's innovative spirit. For instance, the first production of a 1/100thstopwatch happened in 1916.

In the 1920s, Minerva invented one of the first manually-wound monopusher chronographs specially developed for wristwatches, marking a new chapter in the Manufacture's history.  In addition to the calibre 13.20, the calibre 17.29 was produced during the 1930s and was one of the slimmest monopusher chronographs of the time, measuring a mere 5.6 mm in height.

These developments symbolize the level of mastery and innovation reached by Minerva over the years and consolidate its reputation in the manufacture of monopusher chronographs with various case sizes and complications.

Upholding the Minerva legacy and paying tribute to more than 160 years of fine watchmaking history, these horological achievements have become the inspiration for the development of the new Montblanc timepieces.

MONTBLANC – Heritage 1858 Split Second Chronograph Bronze Edition

MONTBLANC1858 Split Second Chronograph Bronze 44 Special Limited Edition - 2019

Montblanc will unveil its new Montblanc 1858 Split Second Chronograph Limited Edition 8 during the Salón Internacional Alta Relojería (SIAR) in Mexico from 15th to 17th October 2019

Montblanc & SIAR in Mexico

Now presenting its 12thedition, the Salón Internacional Alta Relojería México is a well-known exhibition in Latin America that showcases almost all of the major watch brands. It is here that aficionados, collectors and professionals can discover the latest trends and new releases from the world of fine watchmaking. This year over 50 luxury watch brands will be on display for the pleasure of more than 4,000 enthusiasts and experts of Haute Horlogerie.

The Montblanc 1858 Split Second Chronograph Limited Edition 8 is a true watch for connoisseurs inspired by the heritage of Minerva with a distinctive vintage green aesthetic, reminiscent of the colours of Mexico. The dial is made of green Jade Nephrine, expressing the spirit of mountain exploration.

Mexico has a strong community of watch aficionados that particularly appreciate the world of fine watchmaking and distinctive timepieces and we are pleased to introduce this new timepiece during SIAR” says Davide Cerrato, Montblanc Managing Director Watch Division.

1858
Split Second Chronograph Limited Edition 8

The Montblanc 1858 product line is inspired by the legendary Minerva professional watches from the 1920s and 1930s which were conceived for military use and exploration. Reinterpreting these legendary models, the Montblanc 1858 watches express the spirit of mountain exploration, embodying the modern trend of returning and reconnecting to nature.

For this year’s SIAR, Montblanc is unveiling the Montblanc 1858 Split Second Chronograph Limited Edition 8, which combines a 44-mm bronze case with a distinctive smoked-green dial crafted from nephrite jade, a first for the Maison.  Nephrite jade is one of two distinct mineral forms of this precious stone and is prized for its durability, toughness, translucency and lustre.

Inspired by the Mexican flag, the Nephrite jade green dial is paired with rose-gold-coloured elements and red accents that accentuate the vintage style, while also providing excellent readability of the complications both day and night.  An anti-magnetized treatment on the inside of the sapphire crystal allows for greater precision of the two chronograph seconds hands. The chronograph indications are displayed via a rose gold-coated central chronograph second hand, a white-coloured split second hand (to measure a second time interval) and a chronograph minute counter at three o'clock.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Following the design of the original Minerva timepiece, the Montblanc 1858 Split Second Chronograph Limited Edition 8 features a telemeter scale that runs around the dial, which was a common feature on the legendary Minerva chronographs. A telemeter makes it possible to measure the distance of a phenomenon, which is both visible and audible, like the lightning and thunder in a storm. The chronograph hand starts when the phenomenon is seen (lightning) and is stopped when the sound is heard (thunder). The position on the scale shows the distance in kilometres separating the phenomenon from the observer (or the user from the storm, in this example). Calibration is based on the speed at which sound travels through the air, which is approximately 340 meters per second or 1,115 feet per second.

The timepiece also features a tachymeter (base 1000) at the centre of the dial in a colimaçon, snail shape, which allows the user to measure a length of time up to three minutes (instead of one minute in a traditional tachymeter scale around the dial). The tachymeter scale is to show the speed of a moving object, such as a car, over a known distance, measured in miles or kilometres. As the moving car passes the starting-point of the measured course, the owner starts the chronograph hand and stops it as the car passes the finishing-point. The number indicated by the hand on the tachymeter scale represents the speed in kilometres or miles per hour.

It is combined with a complex “rattrapante” (split second) complication developed by the Montblanc engineers that allows the user to measure intermediate times without interrupting the ongoing measurement of a longer elapsing time. The “rattrapante” can be admired through the sapphire glass of the case back like on a traditional timepiece with such a function.

The Montblanc 1858 Split Second Chronograph Limited Edition 8 is equipped with the hand-crafted Manufacture monopusher chronograph calibre MB M16.31 that features two column wheels, horizontal coupling and a power reserve of 50 hours. The movement takes its inspiration from the original Minerva calibre 17.29, developed in the 1930s, that was used for both pocket watches and wristwatches.  This modern-day version is recognisable thanks to its beautiful hand-finishing such as Côtes de Genève stripes, inner angles, circular graining and bevelling as well as its fine details such as the recognizable Minerva arrow, a chronograph bridge shaped in the form of a “V”, and a large screwed balance that has a traditional frequency of 18,000 semi-oscillations per hour.

The timepiece features a matching green alligator strap with beige stitching that has been hand-crafted by the Richemont Pelletteria in Florence.

In order to guarantee the performance of the product line, the limited-edition timepieces undergo over 500 hours of simulated wear, with specific testing and controls under real-life conditions.

MONTBLANC – TimeWalker Manufacture Chronograph Edition

MONTBLANCTimeWalker Manufacture Chronograph Limited Edition

Montblanc Official Timing Partner Of
The Goodwood Festival Of Speed For
The Third Year Running

Goodwood, one of the grandest motor racing celebrations

From July 4th to 7th 2019, the spectacular Goodwood House located in West Sussex, England, will play host to the Festival of Speed, one of the greatest festivals of car culture in the world today and an important fixture on the British social calendar since it was founded 26 years ago by Lord Richmond. Over 600 cars and motorcycles spanning the history of motoring and motor sport take part in the festivities, joined by some of the most legendary figures from the world of sport as well as international celebrities.

In honour of this anniversary, Montblanc unveils for the first time a retail pop-up in the heart of the action where the latest collections will be showcased for sale. The highlight of the pieces will be the TimeWalker Collection which celebrates the spirit of racing and the rallying legacy of Minerva; Montblanc’s Swiss watch manufacture. In addition, the pop-up will house classic writing instruments, beautifully crafted leather goods as well as the most recent eyewear collection for men and women.

The theme for the 2019 Festival of Speed will be “Speed Kings – Motorsport’s Record Breakers” as “motorsport is about pushing man and machine to the very limit, and this year, Goodwood will celebrate the people and machinery that set the benchmark or raise the bar. The focus will not just be on the Land Speed Record, but on every area of record breaking in motorsport, from the most consecutive wins, to most championships, fastest laps, most poles set by a manufacturer and much more”.

Only with the help of a precise and reliable timekeeping instrument can records of time actually be broken. Because of its illustrious past as a stopwatch of choice to time races with great accuracy, it is always very special to see the storied Minerva return to its roots at one of the world’s most exciting racing events. It is, without a doubt, the perfect backdrop to introduce the latest iteration of our TimeWalker chronograph, a tribute to the spirit of racing and the constant quest to break records,” says Nicolas Baretzki, Montblanc CEO.

As Official Timing Partner for the third year running, Montblanc will lend its timekeeping expertise to the numerous races that take place over the four-day event. As is customary each year, the festival will culminate in a spectacular 1.16-mile timed Hillclimb Shootout, which will determine the champion of the 2019 Festival of Speed and the winner of a Montblanc timepiece — the TimeWalker Manufacture Chronograph. This year marks the 20th anniversary of ex-Formula 1 driver Nick Heidfeld setting the outright record for the 1.16-mile Goodwood Hill course in 41.6 seconds.

Montblanc & Goodwood

Davide Cerrato, Managing Director Montblanc Watches adds: “The link between Montblanc and racing timekeeping dates back to the forties when Minerva was setting the standard of precision and building chronographs monopusher like the Rally Timer, the ultimate instrument to celebrate Motorsport passion.

Paying tribute to the legacy of Minerva, Montblanc continues over 160 years of fine watchmaking tradition with its collections. Founded in 1858 in Villeret, The Minerva Manufacture was a leading specialist in the fabrication of professional watches and known as an exclusive workshop producing high-quality instruments for measuring brief intervals of time with remarkable precision — for example, the 1/100th of second counter that was presented in 1916. A perfect example of this heritage is the “Rally Timer”, a stopwatch that was created to time motor racing with high precision and which has been the source of inspiration for the TimeWalker collection.

The TimeWalker product line combines these legendary timing instruments of the past with the spirit of motor racing, encapsulating the Minerva heritage, technology, masculine energy, winning performance and the style of the glory days of racing. During the Goodwood event, and in selected boutiques, Montblanc will launch the new TimeWalker Manufacture Chronograph Limited Edition 1500.

The timepiece is crafted with “distressed” steel, a special finish which is achieved by treating the stainless-steel case with a black-coating and then manually washing and brushing it to give each timepiece its very own patina and unique appearance. This vintage look matches perfectly with the black and grey “reverse panda” dial, black ceramic bezel, black rhodium-coated hands and the brand-new black Nubuck calf leather strap.

The TimeWalker Manufacture Chronograph Limited Edition 1500 is powered by the Montblanc Manufacture chronograph calibre MB 25.10 featuring traditional finishing such as “Côtes de Genève”, circular graining, blue screws and a new Monobloc oscillating weight made of black rhodium-plated tungsten and designed in the shape of a steering wheel. The movement is equipped with a traditional column wheel, a horizontal coupling as well as a stop-second mechanism, allowing the precise setting of the time. The timepiece indicates the hours, minutes, small seconds and date, as well as the chronograph’s indications with a central hand and counters at 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock, reminiscent of traditional 3-6-9 counter chronograph positions.

MONTBLANC – 1858 Split Second Chronograph Only Watch 2019

MONTBLANC1858 Split Second Chronograph Only Watch 2019

Montblanc donates a one-of-a-kind timepiece of
its 1858 product line to actively sustain Only Watch 2019

Only Watch Partnership

Montblanc is proud to continue its support of Only Watch in the fight against Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a genetic disorder characterized by progressive muscle degeneration and weakness.

Now presenting its 8th Edition, Only Watch is a biennale auction of unique timepieces created by some of the finest brands that have raised over 40 million Euros to date. Under the patronage of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco, and following the initiative of Luc Pettavino, President of the Association Monégasque contre les Myopathies, Only Watch is an international watchmaking charity event. The Montblanc 1858
Split Second Chronograph Only Watch 2019

Precise, legible and robust, the legendary professional Minerva watches were conceived for military use and exploration. Inspired by these historical timepieces, the Montblanc 1858 product line pays tribute to the Minerva Manufacture’s heritage. “The 1858 Split Second Chronograph Only Watch 2019 is a refined chronograph complication, quite rare and incredibly rooted into the story of Minerva. This execution inside the 1858 product line represents the state of the art of our high-end hand-made hand-finished watchmaking offer” says Davide Cerrato, Montblanc Managing Director Watch Division.

In the spirit of mountain exploration, Montblanc reinterprets an historical Minerva military monopusher chronograph from the 1930’s with the one-of-a kind 1858 Split Second Chronograph Only Watch 2019. For the first time, Montblanc unveils a wristwatch which combines a 44 mm case in full satin-finished titanium grade-two, the hand-crafted Montblanc Manufacture Monopusher Chronograph calibre MB M16.31, a brand-new matching Sfumato alligator strap and a special dial made of degraded blue Agate, a natural stone, giving an unique blue appearance – all those elements making it the ideal watch for collectors.

Like on the original timepiece, the unique piece features a telemeter scale that runs around the dial, which was a typical feature on the legendary Minerva chronographs. A telemeter makes it possible to measure the distance of a phenomenon which is both visible and audible, like the lightning and thunder in a storm.

A tachymeter scale (base 1000) is also visible at the centre of the dial in a “colimaçon” (snail shape), which allows the user to measure a length of time up to three minutes instead of one minute in a traditional chronograph scale around the dial. The tachymeter scale is to show the speed of a moving object, such as a car, over a known distance.

Additionally, the Montblanc engineers has developed a “rattrapante” (split second) complication that allows the owner to measure intermediate times without interrupting the ongoing measurement of a longer elapsing time. The “rattrapante” can be admired through the sapphire glass of the case back like on traditional timepiece with such a function.

The timepiece features the historical design codes taken from the original 1930s Minerva chronograph including large cathedral hands with a cloisonné design filled with white Super-LumiNova® and luminescent Arabic numerals. Other design details include the original Montblanc logo from the 1930s era with its historical font and emblem of the Mont Blanc Mountain in the centre. For utmost visibility, the chronograph indications are displayed with a black-rhodium-coated central chronograph second hand, a red-coloured split second hand to measure a second time interval and a chronograph minute counter at three o'clock.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

On the case back, the sapphire crystal reveals the beauty of the Montblanc Manufacture monopusher chronograph Calibre MB M16.31, that features two column wheels, a horizontal coupling, a power reserve of 50 hours and a large screwed balance beating at the traditional frequency of 18,000 semi-oscillations per hour. The Montblanc Manufacture in Villeret is part of only a select group of Maisons that possess the know-how to produce the hairspring internally allowing to have one of the largest screwed balance wheel. The movement takes its inspiration from the original Minerva calibre 17.29 developed in the 1930s, that was used for both pocket watches and wristwatches. This calibre is recognisable thanks to its handcrafted finishings - Côtes de Genève stripes, inner angles, circular graining and bevelling – as well as its fine details such as the Minerva arrow and the chronograph bridge shaped in the form of a “V” whose design was protected in 1912.

I am grateful to all the watchmaking groups and independent brands participating in this 2019 ONLY WATCH edition demonstrating dedication and heart through their creativity and craftmanship for this year’s auction which promises to be, once again, record-breaking”, says Luc Pettavino.

These 52 brands will offer sought-after rarities that can be accessed nowhere else. Unique pieces showcasing the best savoir-faire in the horology world in all of its diversity.

For the second time Christie’s is the auctioneer of choice on November 9 when the 50 one-of-a-kind timepieces will be auctioned at the Four Seasons Hôtel des Bergues at 2 pm (UTC+1).

Christie’s is looking forward working once more closely with the Association Monégasque contre les Myopathies on their 8th edition of ONLY WATCH, under the guidance of Luc Pettavino. On behalf of Christie’s, I would like to extend my sincere Thank You to all involved in making this project a priority and to be present on 9 November in Geneva to compete for one – or more – of the 50 unique and specially made timepieces for ONLY WATCH”, commented Earl of Snowdon, Honorary Chairman Christie’s EMEA

Ahead of the auction, this unprecedented watch collection will be exhibited to the public from 25 September 2019 to 9 November 2019, in 10 different cities around the world. This world tour will be starting in Monaco, during (and on the site of) the Monaco Yacht Show.

Since its creation in 2005, ONLY WATCH has raised over CHF40 million. Again, 100% of the proceeds achieved with the 8th edition of the charity auction will be directly invested in scientific and medical research on neuromuscular diseases in general and on Duchenne muscular dystrophy in particular. An achievement made possible by to the generous donation and participation of the 52 watch brands, the partners offering a variety of services and logistical support, the media offering substantial coverage and, of course, the auctioneer, Christie’s.

With ONLY WATCH everyone creates beauty to do good, meaning in this case supporting the work of dozens of researchers around the world, financing studies, purchasing material, creating biotech companies in the chemistry and biology sector… to bring this science to the clinic and one day maybe to find a cure. We have done a lot already and are conscious that there is still much to be done and that this initiative needs, more than ever, help and support.” Luc Pettavino.
