TRADITION OUTLASTS TIME

Inspired by Minerva’s wristwatches of the 40s and 50s, today’s Heritage line combines the elegance of watchmaking’s past with today’s technology and design. Vintage aesthetics like domed dials, dot indexes and glass box crystals pair well with gorgeous dial colours.

The Heritage Pythagore Small Second Limited Edition 148 pays tribute to the Minerva calibre No. 48, developed and produced in the manufacture in Villeret in 1948.

Taking inspiration from the original movement and meticulously following the golden ratio principle, Montblanc engineers have developed the Manufacture Calibre MB M14.08, with distinctive geometrical shapes and straight lines. They first defined the movement diameter of 31.6 mm in order to fit into a modern size case with enough room to apply the golden pentagon, in which a five-point branch star is obtained via the intersection of golden triangles.

With the Heritage Pythagore Small Second Limited Edition 148, Montblanc presents two new timepieces that draw on the rich past of the Minerva watch manufacture. With them, the new Montblanc manufacture calibre MB M14.08, inspired by a historic Minerva calibre, makes its debut.

It was constructed according to the proportions of the golden ratio and thus has a particularly harmonious look. The Heritage Pythagore is available in either white or rose gold. However, both versions are limited editions of 148 pieces.

White or rose gold Heritage case

The 39 mm case in 18-carat white or rose gold is reminiscent of the historical designs of the collection. Accordingly, the case of the Montblanc Heritage Pythagore is completely polished and features rounded lugs with facets. With a height of 9.5 mm, the watch is also extremely slim.

Meanwhile, the fluted crown bears the Montblanc star. In addition, a domed box sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating protects the dial. On the back, the exhibition case back reveals the mechanics inside the watch. With a water resistance of up to 50 metres, however, the watch should not come into contact with too much water.

The two dials of the Montblanc Heritage Pythagore

The domed dials pick up on the vintage look and come in either blue or brown. Both dials have a sunburst decoration in the centre of the dial. This is followed by a “Grainé” finish on the hour ring. Finally, the manufacture applies a brown or blue sfumato colour gradient, which becomes increasingly darker from the centre outwards.

The Montblanc Heritage Pythagore has applied dot indices and numerals in 18-carat gold. These, like the curved Dauphine hour and minute hands, have luminous material on them to improve legibility. At 6 o’clock, there is a small seconds with a gold-plated baton hand.

Furthermore, Montblanc targets collectors and watch enthusiasts with the “hidden” Minerva signature between 4 and 5 o’clock. In addition, there is the historic Montblanc logo at 12 o’clock with a reference to the new MB M14.08 calibre that ticks away inside the watch.

The new Montblanc MB M14.08 in-house movement

The Montblanc Heritage Pythagore Small Second Limited Edition 148 marks the debut of the new MB M14.08 manufacture movement inspired by the historic calibre 48 of the Minerva Pythagore from the 1940s.

The bridges of this calibre were positioned according to the golden ratio, which resulted in harmonious and pleasing aesthetics. The straight lines and geometric angles in particular were exceptional. Montblanc made use of this very same architecture when designing the new MB M14.08 calibre.

The MB M14.08 calibre measures 14 lines and consists of 133 individual parts and 19 rubies. It has manual winding and a power reserve of approximately 80 hours. Montblanc uses a screw balance with a frequency of 18,000 vibrations per hour (2.5 Hz).

The manufacture also decorates the bridges made of rhodium-plated nickel silver with Geneva stripes. The plate is of the same material, but has a perlage finish. The edges are not ignored either and are polished and bevelled by hand. The Montblanc Heritage Pythagore Small Second Limited Edition 148 comes on a brown or blue sfumato alligator leather strap, depending on the case material.

The pin buckle made of gold secures the watch on the wrist. Both watches have gone through the internal Montblanc Laboratory Test 500 and are limited to 148 pieces.

MONTBLANC – 1858 Split Second Chronograph Lime Gold Edition

MONTBLANC1858 Split Second Chronograph Lime Gold 44 Special Limited Edition - 2021

Montblanc will unveil its new Montblanc 1858 Split Second Chronograph Limited Edition 18 – A New Gold is born 2021

Montblanc is unveiling the Montblanc 1858 Split Second Chronograph Limited Edition 18 crafted out of an exclusive and innovative 18 K gold alloy called Lime Gold, a true watch for connoisseurs who likes distinctive vintage timepieces.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Precise, legible, and robust for use in extreme conditions, the legendary professional Minerva watches from the 1920s and 1930s were conceived for military use. Inspired by these historical ones, the Montblanc 1858 product line pays tribute to the Minerva heritage. The Montblanc 1858 timepieces are designed and conceived as tool watches for mountain exploration and leaning into the global trend of enjoying the outdoors and nature.

Montblanc 1858 Split Second Chronograph Limited Edition 18

Reinterpreting a 46 mm Minerva historical military chronograph from the 1930s equipped with the original calibre 19-09CH, the Montblanc 1858 Split Second Chronograph Limited Edition 18 features a case made of an innovative 18K gold alloy called Lime Gold, a distinctive gold-coloured dial with contrasting green elements and a matching vintage green nubuck calf strap – an harmony of colour making this timepiece unique.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

It is the first time that a watch Maison unveils a model with this colour of gold fondly named Lime Gold thanks to its deep golden colour that veers towards a pale yellowy green. The Lime Gold colour is made of a special alloy composed of 18 K Gold (Au 750‰), Silver (Ag 238‰) and Iron (Fe 12‰) that provides the distinctive colour giving a true vintage aesthetics.

To match the colour of the new 44 mm 18 K Lime Gold case, the Montblanc 1858 Split Second Chronograph Limited Edition 18 features a distinctive gold-coloured dial with sunray finishes. Providing great readability and vintage style, the monochrome aesthetic is combined with contrasting green-coloured elements of different tones such as the luminescent cathedral-shaped hour- and minute-hands, the minuterie, the central split-second hand, the tachymeter and telemeter scales, as well as the historical Montblanc emblem at 12 o’clock.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In order to give a three-dimensional look both at day/night, the Arabic numerals are fully made of Super-LumiNova with a special patented process that encapsulates the luminescent material and create a ‘monobloc’ shape without any outlines. Gold-coloured has been chosen for the central chronograph second hand as well as for the chronograph 30-minute- and small second-counters.

The glass above the dial has an anti-magnetized treatment on the inside top sapphire crystal to enable greater precision of the chronograph’s two second hands.

Like on the original timepiece, the Montblanc 1858 Split Second Chronograph Limited Edition 18 has a telemeter scale that runs around the dial. The telemeter was a common feature on the legendary Minerva chronographs and adds both function and a vintage touch to this new watch. A telemeter makes it possible to measure the distance of a phenomenon which is both visible and audible, like the lightning and thunder in a storm. The watch also has a tachymeter (base 1000) at the centre of the dial in a colimaçon (snail shape) which lets the user measure a length of time of up to three minutes instead of one minute as it is the case in traditional chronographs. The tachymeter indicates the speed of a moving object, such as a car, over a known distance.

The case back reveals the Manufacture monopusher chronograph calibre MB M16.31 taking its inspiration from the original Minerva calibres 19-09CH from 1909 and the evolution, the 17-29, developed in the 1930s, that were used for both pocket watches and wristwatches. The calibre MB M16.31 is particularly beautiful thanks to its handcrafted traditional finishings such as Côtes de Genève, inner angles, circular graining and bevelling – all performed at the Montblanc Manufacture in Villeret. The Split Second mechanism in the centre brings even more light to the entire movement.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

For this limited edition, the plates and bridges are made in Maillechort (German-silver) plated in 18 K gold harmoniously matching the 18 K Lime Gold case and the dial. The calibre has two column wheels for the chronograph and the split complication, horizontal coupling and a power reserve of 50 hours. Like its predecessor, it is composed of the same V-shape bridge (whose design was protected in 1912) and a large balance wheel with 18 screws beating at the traditional frequency of 2.5 Hz / 18,000 A/H.

The Montblanc 1858 Split Second Chronograph Limited Edition 18 is completed with a new vintage green nubuck alligator leather strap that has been finished with beige stitching to reinforce the vintage look. The strap is also fitted with a matching 18 K Lime Gold buckle for the perfect finishing touch.

The watch is equipped with a matching green alligator leather strap in vintage nubuck with rice stitching, handcrafted by Richemont Pelletteria in Florence.

In order to guarantee the performance of the product line, the limited-edition timepieces undergo over 500 hours of simulated wear, with specific testing and controls under real-life conditions.

Montblanc – A Swiss watchmaker since 1858

Montblanc watchmaking is built on a unique set-up that brings two manufactures together, based in Le Locle and in Villeret, in the Swiss Jura mountains.

The Montblanc watchmaking story began in 1858 when Charles-Ivan Robert founded a watch workshop in the Saint-Imier valley. This marked the beginning of the historic Minerva era. By the end of the 19th century, their pocket watches started to gain recognition for their crown winding system. The Minerva Manufacture’s success resulted in the company becoming a leading specialist in professional watches (stopwatches & chronographs) for measuring small intervals of time with high precision during the 20th century.

Today, the Montblanc timepieces continue the journey of over 160 years of Minerva history in four fine watchmaking areas with Star Legacy, Heritage, TimeWalker and 1858 product lines, all linking the past and the present through design, style and technical innovation.

MONTBLANC – Star Legacy Exo Tourbillon Skeleton Edition

MONTBLANCStar Legacy Exo Tourbillon Skeleton Gold 44.8 Limited Edition 2020

Star Legacy Exo Tourbillon Skeleton LE 8:
A New Level of Suspension

The new Montblanc Star Legacy Exo Tourbillon Skeleton Limited Edition 8 has been completely reinterpreted to feature a refined fully-skeletonized, three-dimensional movement bringing a new level of suspension to the timepiece.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In keeping with the purest horological traditions, the 188 components of the Manufacture Calibre MB M18.69 are entirely hand-decorated by expert craftsmen and women using artisanal finishings such as circular graining, mirror-polishing, and beveling. In addition, the movement also counts  420 inner angles that require expertise and passion to complete.

The new skeletonized Exo Tourbillon movement’s architecture

The original patented Exo Tourbillon complication was developed in-house at the Montblanc Manufacture in Villeret and required three years of development. This new version of the in-house manual-winding movement — the Calibre MB M18.69 — took the Montblanc engineers a further 18 months to develop due to the complexity of its skeletonization. The Manufacture movement Calibre MB M18.69, with its 188 components, was completely rethought in terms of aesthetics, geometry, and stability to reveal the beauty of its mechanism while increasing its performance.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The movement features a three-dimensional construction on different levels, bringing a whole new level of suspension to the timepiece. This is achieved with five pillars that support the main plate on the top, and the barrel and going train bridges on the bottom. It is completed on the front by the Exo Tourbillon balance wheel and the off-centered domed hour and minute dial at 12 o’clock. The main plate and bridges have been completely open-worked, making them visible on both sides of the watch. The barrel drum has also been opened to reveal the spring.

The resulting timepiece creates a composition of pure lines where watchmaking artisanal know-how meets technology, drawing attention to the Exo Tourbillon and the skeletonized movement from top to bottom. Very rarely can we observe a whole movement working from every angle and get a 360-degree view. Each of the movement’s tiny components is meticulously decorated by hand, following traditional techniques that create a bright and airy timepiece. Due to the level of skeletonization and decoration, assembly requires particular dexterity and care in order to avoid scratches on the beveled components.
Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Montblanc Manufacture in Villeret is a very special place that possesses the know-how to produce a movement from A to Z, making all the main components in-house, such as the plates and bridges in German-silver (“Maillechort”) with traditional decoration, and it also manufactures the full regulating organ in-house, including the hairspring.
Artisanal hand-finishing movement decoration

The 188 components of the Manufacture movement Calibre MB M18.69 are entirely decorated in the Montblanc Manufacture in Villeret with traditional horological finishings such as circular graining, mirror-polishing and beveling with inner angles. In total, the movement has more than 420 inner angles that take over two weeks to be decorated by Montblanc’s watch experts. This high-end, artisanal finishing, where the angles of tiny components are beveled by hand to accentuate the play of light, is a very ancient and authentic watchmaking art.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

There are different types of angles, but the inner angles ( 90° <  to  <180°), where the meeting point of two chamfers creates a sharp intersection, are very difficult to achieve. It is impossible to make these with a machine and each artisan develops his/her own technique and tools in order to work each tiny component. In Villeret, artisans often use the stems of mountain flowers, such as gentian, a soft local wood, that is used to apply the polished diamond paste to specific components in order to create the distinctive final shiny effect. This kind of decoration takes time and patience and it takes years of experience to master this precise and regular work.

The new 18K rose gold case & the 18K gold and Grand Feu enamel dial

Inspired by the three-dimensional bridge configuration, the construction of the case, with its domed sapphire crystal on the front, has been built around the movement. The external part of the movement’s main plate has been fixed inside the sides of the case giving an impression of complete suspension. The 44.8 mm case comes in 18 K rose gold and features a sapphire crystal on both sides of the watch, revealing the full beauty of the hand-finished manually-wound Calibre MB M18.69. It also provides a totally transparent view of the Star Legacy Exo Tourbillon Skeleton from front to back.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The off-centered dial, placed on the movement and located at 12 o’clock, is made of 18 K gold and Grand Feu enamel, a rare technical feat that provides an artisanal and traditional touch. 18K rose gold leaf hour and minute hands complete the overall aesthetic.

The timepiece comes fitted with a brown Sfumato alligator leather strap coming from the Pelletteria in Florence, Italy, and is equipped with a triple folding clasp with security pushers, offering a secure grip.

The Exo Tourbillonby Montblanc, patented since 2012

The “Exo” is derived from the Greek for external or outside and refers to the large balance wheel with screws, which is positioned outside of the tourbillon’s rotating cage. This particular patented construction of the Suspended Exo Tourbillon allows the watchmakers at the Montblanc Manufacture in Villeret to have a large and impressive balance wheel and eliminates the need to increase the size of the movement or the case. The massive balance wheel is raised 4.15 mm higher than the dial and appears to be floating above it. This suspended position has been made possible thanks to a tourbillon bridge with only one stainless steel arm which is curved and mirrors the domed hour circle at 12 o’clock. It creates a three-dimensional look and a new fine watchmaking aesthetic.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Due to its asymmetric construction, the alignment of the Exo Tourbillon bridge, with its solitary arm, represents a horological challenge and demands skill and dexterity to complete. The complexity of the patented Exo Tourbillon comes from the dimensions of the long axis that needs to be precise with a concentricity tolerance with a diameter of 0.01 mm, along with the complication construction itself, which requires that the balance’s axis must be perfectly perpendicular to the movement. This technical aspect has been particularly worked on this new model as the tourbillon bridge and the seconds counter are made of one piece, leading to a highly stable construction that is easier to align. Then, a deviation of 5 microns (0.005 mm) at the base of the bridge can result in a deviation at the centre of only 5 microns (0.005 mm) à ratio of 1
