MONTBLANC – 1858 Chronograph ORIGINS Edition

MONTBLANC1858 Chronograph ORIGINS Bronze 46 Special Limited Edition - 2021

A CHRONOGRAPH NAMED ORIGINS

The Montblanc 1858 product line is inspired by the legendary Minerva professional watches from the 1920s and 1930s which were conceived for military use and exploration. Reinterpreting these legendary models, the Montblanc 1858 watches express the spirit of mountain exploration, embodying the modern trend of returning and reconnecting to nature.

Paying tribute to the origins of Minerva, Montblanc  unveils the new Montblanc Montblanc 1858  Monopusher Chronograph Origins Limited Edition 100, a re-edition of a 46 mm military monopusher  chronograph from the 1930s that was equipped with  the calibre 19-09CH

When customers or journalists visit the Manufacture museum in Villeret, they are often surprised by the  modernity and beauty of a 46 mm Minerva military  monopusher chronograph from the 1930s. This  timepiece, with its black dial and luminescent  vintage elements, served as the main inspiration for the  entire Montblanc 1858 collection, hence the name  Origins. While every detail from the original watch has been taken into account – from the dial to the case and  movement – the re-edition goes much further.

The Origins

A leading specialist in the fabrication of professional watches and stopwatches, Minerva developed the 46 mm military monopusher chronograph from the 1930s equipped with the calibre 19-09CH. This historical  timepiece featured a large case size which was  unusual for the time.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO
This size allowed watchmakers to  integrate the calibre 19-09, a movement of 19 lines  developed in 1909 that was initially intended for a  pocket watch. Far from the round pebble-shape of  pocket watches, however, the case o the chronograph was specially  developed for a wristwatch, leading to a  particularly modern look that integrated all the  comfort and ergonomy needed. The original timepiece showcased a black dial with bi-compax counters and  cathedral-shaped hands coated with  Super-LumiNova® which were  designed for military use and provided excellent  readability both during the day and night.

Black  dial is paired with rose-gold-coloured elements that accentuate the vintage style, while also providing excellent readability of the complications both day and night.

Montblanc 1858 Monopusher Chronograph Origins Limited Edition 100

Inspired by the 46 mm Minerva military monopusher chronograph from the 1930s, the new limited edition pays tribute to the origins of the Manufacture. The  timepiece goes beyond a simple re-edition, keeping key elements of the original model while integrating vintage twists. Equipped with the Manufacture  monopusher chronograph calibre MB M16.29, the  Montblanc 1858 Monopusher Chronograph Origins features a 46 mm case made of a special alloy of bronze, a distinctive “officer” case back, a vintage black dial with beige elements, and a  matching brown Sfumato alligator strap.

The Montblanc 1858 Monopusher Chronograph Origins case has been made in a special alloy of bronze that will obtain an attractive patina over time and is reminiscent of exploration tools from the past. An “officer” case back has been added, just like in traditional pocket watches, protecting the movement, which is adorned with distinctive engravings on both sides. The outside of the “officer” case back features the head of the Minerva Goddess. The inside of the  cover bears the inscription “Réédition du chronographe militaire Minerva des années 1930 doté d’un calibre fait main dans la pure tradition horlogère suisse”  (Re-edition of a  Minerva military chronograph from the 1930s equipped with a hand-made calibre  following the Swiss watchmaking tradition).

Montblanc
uses a very innovative technique to create the image of the Minerva Goddess on the “officer” back giving it an authentic rendering in 3-dimensions,  providing depth and realism as if it was a photograph. Made of titanium, the metal must first be structured, which means that the decoration will be engraved by laser, taking into consideration the relief of the drawing.

Then the desired finish (matt and shiny) is also achieved by laser. Finally comes the colouring phase. The colours are created by laser-generated oxidation. It is the level of oxidation that determines the final colour obtained (and desired). Montblanc is one of the most advanced Swiss Maisons to use of this technology on such a large surface. This innovation is in line with the brand‘s spirit of exploration.

When opening the “officer” case back, the beauty of the  Manufacture monopusher chronograph calibre MB M16.29  is revealed, showing an authentic reconstruction of the  Minerva chronograph calibre dating back to the beginning  of the 20th century. For this limited edition, the execution of the movement is of particular note as the main  plate and bridges have been left in raw Maillechort (also called  “German-silver”), a high-end traditional material used in  Minerva movements in former times.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Maillechort gives a slightly yellowish finish, rather than the more common  rhodium coating. Traditional finishings such as Côtes de  Genève, inner angles, circular graining, and bevelling are, of course, all performed at the same Montblanc Manufacture in Villeret

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO
Like on the original chronograph calibre, the MB M16.29 features the iconic V-shape bridge (whose design was protected in 1912), a column wheel, horizontal coupling, and a traditional frequency of 18,000 A/h. As a tribute to historical movements, the Minerva arrow is visible at the extremity of the chronograph “blocker”.

This modern-day version is reco

The timepiece comes with a black dial that has been  paired with contrasting rose gold-coloured cathedral-shaped hands and numerals with beige Super-LumiNova® for greater  legibility at night. This enhanced readability continues onto the Arabic numerals as well as on the hour and minute hands thanks to additional touches of luminescence. A nod to the  original chronograph comes in the form of a Minerva logo on the dial that is symmetrically positioned below the historical  Montblanc logo at 6 o’clock. Other vintage details include  bi-compax counters with large small seconds and  minutes chronograph, as well as a railway minute track  that have all been reproduced from the original design.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Montblanc 1858 Monopusher Chronograph Origins is completed with a brand-new vintage-style brown Sfumato  alligator strap with beige stitching and is strictly limited to  100 pieces.

As mentioned, Montblanc will make only 100 examples of the 1858 Monopusher Chronograph Origins Limited Edition 100 and each will retail for the collector-driven price of EUR 30,000. That's about $36,200, and at that price, Montblanc is really preaching to the choir, which presumably includes no small number of Montblanc fans and Minerva nerds.

Montblanc is very honored to announce that for the first time, it has established a partnership with the "Pink Dial Project" (The Pink Dial Project) initiated by the founder of "Revolution" and "The Rake" magazine Wei Koh, and created and donated the Montblanc 1858 series North and South Hemisphere World Time. A special edition (orphan) of the pink dial of the watch to support the fight against breast cancer charity. This orphan watch is carefully assembled by Montblanc female watchmakers. The case is made of black DLC titanium with a unique purple-pink dial. It will be officially auctioned in October this year.

The "Pink Dial Project" is a charity auction project, initiated by Wei Koh, founder of "Revolution" and "The Rake" magazines, and Time+Tide, Fratello, and Eye of Jewelry. The major watch brands directly cooperate to customize orphan watches to raise funds for the cause of fighting breast cancer. The auction will be held in October 2021 (Breast Cancer Prevention Month) through the Loupe This online auction platform, which was launched last year by the internationally renowned watch expert Eric Ku. All proceeds from the auction will be donated to breast cancer charities in the United States, the United Kingdom, Singapore, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Australia. In addition, the winning bidder of each watch can also choose to donate it to any recognized breast cancer charity in the world.

As one of the iconic models of the Montblanc brand, the 1858 Series Southern and Northern Hemisphere World Time watches are equipped with two highly recognizable rotating three-dimensional hemispheres and are equipped with unique self-made world time complications. This time, Montblanc has specially created a 1858 series of North and South Hemisphere World Time orphans for charity auction, using pink symbolizing the fight against breast cancer, with contrasting dark black tones, and unique design aesthetics.

Montblanc
’s designers drew inspiration from pink, a symbol of the fight against breast cancer, to create a dazzling purple-pink lacquer dial decorated with sun radiation patterns, making the special edition (orphan) pink dial of the Montblanc 1858 Series Southern and Northern Hemisphere World Time Watches unique. Different. In order to present better legibility and beauty of light effects, the azimuth compass indication on the bezel, the Arabic numerals on the dial, the hour markers and the hemisphere are all coated with blue Super-LumiNovaÆ luminous coating, hour, minute and second time zone The display panel is coated with a green luminous coating.

This watch is equipped with a 42 mm diameter titanium case, which is treated with DLC diamond-like carbon coating to present a unique "Black 4" dark black, which contrasts sharply with the purple-pink dial with its "black" style. The metal surface is treated by high-pressure micro-bead sandblasting to give the case a tiny texture, and the DLC coating adheres tightly to it to form a fine matte effect. In terms of technology, the DLC-coated titanium case is highly scratch-resistant and wear-resistant, has the characteristics of low thermal conductivity, lightness and exquisiteness. In addition, the case is satin-brushed and equipped with curved chamfered lugs, which highlights the shape of the watch.

It is worth mentioning that the Montblanc Manufacture World Time complication movement carried by this watch is carefully assembled by the Montblanc female watchmaker, adding a touch of feminine femininity to it. The uniqueness of the Montblanc World Time complication lies in the two highly recognizable rotating three-dimensional hemispheres on the dial, which rotate once every 24 hours, and are marked with 24 fixed scales of time zones around them, and the southern and northern hemispheres are equipped with day and night displays. Present a unique world time display function. The second time zone display is at the "nine o'clock" position, and the date window indicating the local time is at the "three o'clock" position.

The Montblanc 1858 series of South and North Hemisphere World Time watches are inspired by the "Seven Peaks of the World" mountaineering challenge. The two rotating hemispheres of the watch mark the positions of the Seven Peaks and Mont Blanc in the world, and the names of the peaks are also engraved on it. On the back of the watch.

To pay tribute to the "pink dial" charity project, the back of this orphan watch is specially engraved with the three-dimensional view of the pink Mont Blanc under the sunset, which can be described as lifelike. Montblanc presents this real scene through a very special laser engraving technology, making it as realistic as a photo. To make such a fine and vivid pattern, first of all, we must use a laser to engrave the decorative layers on the titanium metal to ensure its relief effect.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Then the same laser is used to further polish the required matte or polished gloss finish effect. In the end, the color is given, and the degree of oxidation produced by the laser cleverly determines the desired color. Montblanc is one of the leading Swiss brands that use this technology on such a large area. This innovative move is also closely aligned with the brand's adventurous spirit.

MONTBLANC – Star Legacy Suspended Exo Tourbillon Edition

MONTBLANCStar Legacy Suspended Exo Tourbillon White Gold Limited Edition 2021

The Montblanc Star Legacy Suspended Exo Tourbillon Limited Edition 18 perfectly demonstrates the mastery of a classic and traditional artisanal aesthetic combined with an innovative spirit.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The patented Suspended Exo Tourbillon complication was developed entirely in-house and required three years of development. The “Exo” is derived from the Greek for “external” or “outside” and refers to the large balance wheel which is positioned outside of the tourbillon’s rotating cage.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Montblanc engineers’ idea, when developing the innovative patented Suspended Exo Tourbillon, was to create a one-minute tourbillon that would be more visible, further revealing its beauty. This particular patented construction allowed them to keep a large and impressive balance wheel, eliminating the need to increase the size of the movement or the case. The massive balance wheel is raised 3.2 mm higher than the dial and appears to be floating above it. This suspended position has been made possible thanks to a dedicated tourbillon bridge with only one arm which is curved, creating a three-dimensional look and a fine watchmaking aesthetic.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Thanks to its asymmetric construction, the alignment of the Exo Tourbillon bridge, with its solitary arm, represents a horological challenge. The complexity of the patented Exo Tourbillon comes from the dimensions of the long axis that need to be extremely precise, along with the complication construction itself, which requires that the balance’s axis must be perfectly perpendicular to the movement.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In terms of performance, the Exo Tourbillon saves more energy than a conventional tourbillon as the cage is smaller in size and free of the weight of the balance wheel. It is also balanced by two gold pillars that equilibrate the cage. The fact that the balance is positioned outside of the rotating cage also means that it isn’t affected by the inertia of the cage.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The large balance wheel, beating at the traditional frequency of 18’000 oscillations per hour plays an important role in the performance of the timepiece thanks to its impressive 18 screws.

Following pure horological tradition, the Manufacture movement calibre MB M16.68 is entirely decorated in the Montblanc Manufacture in Villeret with hand-crafted finishings such as Côtes de Genève stripes, inner angles, circular graining, beveling and a mirror-polished pawl with the hand-finished Minerva arrow.

The entirely polished 44.8 mm case comes in 18 K white gold and features a sapphire crystal on the case back which reveals the beauty of the hand-finished manually wound movement calibre MB M16.68. It also provides a totally transparent view of the Exo Tourbillon from the front to the back.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The sophisticated three-dimensional dial of the Montblanc Star Legacy Suspended Exo Tourbillon Limited Edition 18 is constructed in eight different parts that have been decorated entirely by hand using traditional watchmaking techniques. The base is in 18 K gold and has been highlighted with a hand-made guilloché pattern in places, and a sandblasted decoration in others, with polished steps framing the different finishing techniques. A refined guilloché pattern completes the aesthetic. A silvery-white dome at 12 o’clock, with an azuré decoration in the centre, houses the hours and minutes counter, mirroring the three-dimensional effect of the outstanding Suspended Exo Tourbillon.

This exclusive Montblanc Star Legacy Suspended Exo Tourbillon is limited to 18 pieces, paying tribute to the year the Montblanc Manufacture was founded in Villeret in 1858. The timepiece comes fitted with a blue alligator leather strap and a triple folding clasp with security pushers.

MONTBLANC – Star Legacy Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph Only Watch

MONTBLANCStar Legacy Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph Only Watch 2021 - Unique Piece

This year marks the 9th edition of the renowned Only Watch charity auction and also the 200th anniversary of the inking chronograph created by Nicolas Rieussec. To celebrate both important milestones, Montblanc has decided to pay tribute to both events with the creation of the Montblanc Star Legacy Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph Only Watch’21 Unique Piece that will be auctioned together with a wooden replica of the historical chronograph from 1821, and an exclusive immersive high watchmaking experience, all in support of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy research.

Montblanc & Only Watch Charity Auction 9th Edition

Since 2009, Montblanc has supported the Only Watch Charity Auction held by Luc Pettavino, President of the Association Monégasque contre les Myopathies and the founder of Only Watch that has raised over 70 million Euros to date. The auction is under the patronage of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco and is organized in partnership with Christie’s. This 9th edition will unite 53 watchmakers from both the large groups and small independents who all express their creativity and generosity through exceptional timepieces crafted from the heart. The luxury watches will embark on a world tour starting on September 22nd, 2021 at the Monaco Yacht Show in the charity’s hometown.

This year, the event will be extraordinary as we celebrate the 9th Edition of Only Watch along with the bicentenary of the first inking chronograph invented by the French watchmaker, Nicolas Rieussec. Over the last few years, Montblanc watches have been successful at auctions, with prices increasing significantly, as they are synonymous with high quality, great value, expertise, and craftsmanship.

The success story will continue as Montblanc is honoured to donate a one-of-a-kind

Montblanc Star Legacy Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph Only Watch’21 Unique Piece and a replica of Nicolas Rieussec’s 1821 historical inking chronograph, as well as an immersive high watchmaking experience.

The Montblanc Star Legacy Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph Only Watch’21 Unique Piece The Star Legacy Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph Only Watch’21 Unique Piece features the two recognisable, rotating, horizontally-aligned, chronograph discs with fixed double index, combined with a gold coloured dial inspired by the original chronograph device from 1821

The 200th Anniversary of the Rieussec Inking Chronograph Invention

For history lovers, Nicolas Rieussec (1781 – 1866) was the sixth royal watchmaker to the King of France. On September 1st, 1821, he went to the Champ-de-Mars Arrondissement de la Seine horse race in Paris to test out one of his latest inventions, a chronometer designed to consistently measure the time horses take to travel the race distance. The beauty of his innovative mechanism was that not only did it time the winning horse, but also all the horses that crossed the line.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

It worked using a fixed double index that would place a black mark on two rotating counters the moment each horse crossed the finish line. A few weeks later, he presented his new invention to the country’s Academy of Sciences in Paris who were fascinated by Rieussec’s device and named it a “chronograph”, taken from the Greek “chronos” for time and “graphein” to write. The word chronograph was born and Nicolas Rieussec became the inventor of the world’s first inking chronograph, marking the history of fine watchmaking. The principle of the rotating counters was the inspiration for the design and the movement of the Star Legacy Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph Only Watch’21 Unique Piece, giving the watch its unmistakable appearance.

A unique timepiece dedicated to Only Watch

This one-of-a-kind timepiece comes in a 43 mm 18 K yellow gold case that is shaped like a pebble, offering comfort and elegance on the wrist. For Montblanc, the details make all the difference, with sapphire crystal on the front that has been treated with an anti-reflective coating on both sides to allow the wearer to admire the dial. Paying tribute to the charity auction, the caseback features a special engraving Only Watch Unique Piece. Furthermore, the movement’s oscillating weight has been crafted out of 18 K yellow gold and decorated with a guilloché grain d’orge pattern. It also includes a cartridge where a further engraving can be added – either Only Watch 2021 or the name of the future owner, making this unique timekeeper a true collector’s piece. For each Only Watch auction, a colour theme is chosen, which for this 9th edition will be orange. Following this fun theme, Montblanc has added subtle orange touches to the dial’s railway track, the skeletonized second time zone hand, the chronograph’s double index, and the date number six, as a nod to the day of the auction.

The complex dial is composed of six different parts, providing a three-dimensional effect. It has been developed with particular attention paid to the proportions of the aesthetic as well as the horological details. Like on the original timekeeper, the base of the dial is made in a gold colour with a traditional guilloché grain d’orge decoration. Paying tribute to the famous chronograph’s inventor, a ring with the inscriptions Nicolas Rieussec and Homage 200 ans (Tribute to 200 years) has been applied on the outer part of the dial and is surrounded by a refined filet sauté guilloché.

The contemporary shape and classic finishes of the Montblanc Manufacture calibre MB R200 can be admired through the sapphire crystal caseback. A keen eye will notice that the bridges feature Geneva stripes with bevelled and polished edges, while rubies, blued screws, and gold-coated wheels complete the ensemble. This automatic monopusher chronograph has a column wheel and vertical disc clutch, double barrels, and a power reserve of 72 hours.

The unique piece is paired with a new brown alligator strap featuring orange stitching and alligator lining as a nod to the edition’s auction colour.

The wooden replica of Nicolas Rieussec’s historical inking chronograph

For this special occasion and, for the first time, Montblanc has developed a wooden replica of the Nicolas Rieussec historical inking chronograph from 1821. Inspired by the original device, it is made of a walnut burl and features two white enamel rotating chronograph discs that can be easily started and stopped by a pusher located on the left of the device. The zero-reset has to be done manually by turning the counters with the help of the central axes like on the original one.

A unique watchmaking experience at the Montblanc Manufacture in Villeret

In addition to the one-of-a-kind timepiece and the historical chronograph replica, the successful bidder will receive a special invitation to a rare experience at the Montblanc Manufacture in Villeret in the beautiful area of the Jura mountains.

The lucky owner will have the opportunity to discover the know-how and craftsmanship of the Manufacture. He or she will also be able to assemble a Montblanc Calibre MB R200 with the master watchmaker who has created the unique chronograph. As a final touch, the personalised 18 K yellow gold oscillating weight will be assembled in the presence of the watch’s owner.

The Montblanc Star Legacy Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph Only Watch’21 Unique Piece is powered by the automatic Manufacture Monopusher Chronograph Movement MB R200. Everything in the movement has been designed to reach technical efficiency and aesthetics:

  • ⦁    As someone would expect from a Manufacture Chronograph, it is equipped with a column-wheel mechanism that controls the monopusher mechanism.
  • ⦁    To improve the chronograph’s start, the connection between the gear train and the chronograph's wheels is alternately engaged and disengaged by a vertical disc clutch and functions almost without any wear and tear. This mechanism prevents the elapsed time discs from jumping when the chronograph is switched on. The timepiece features a monopusher, which is ergonomically positioned at 8 o’clock, where the wearer’s thumb can conveniently operate it.
  • ⦁    Additionally, a rapid-reset mechanism for the hour and date is practical for travellers who journey from one time zone to another. These indicators can be set either clockwise or counter-clockwise without affecting the position of the minute hand.
  • ⦁    The rate is regulated by a large 9.7-mm-diameter balance wheel with screws and oscillates regularly. Thanks to a double barrel of 72-hour power reserve, the rate remains constant without being affected by the chronograph function. Furthermore, the balance bridge is transversal, meaning that it is screwed down at both extremities allowing precise positioning and improving shock resistance.
