Jaquet Droz – GRANDE SECONDE Skelet-One

Jaquet DrozGRANDE SECONDE Skelet-One Edition - 2020

THE TWO NEW FACES OF
THE GRANDE SECONDE SKELET-ONE

Plasma ceramic makes a dramatic entrance alongside red gold. One is steeped in tradition and the other is all about technology. Two new variations of a timepiece that has come to stand for Jaquet Droz’s brazen artistry.

Modern or classic? No need to choose. The Grande Seconde — the face of traditional Fine Watchmaking by Jaquet Droz — triumphed as it roared into the 21st century with the Skelet-One.

In record time, the creation staked its place as a cornerstone of the watchmaker's contemporary image: bold, creative, modern and on-trend, yet firmly rooted in its origins. Now Jaquet Droz unveils two new versions of its Grande Seconde Skelet-One and each has a unique way of honoring two very complementary stylistic approaches.

The traditional model features a case made of red gold, a gold alloy that Jaquet Droz admires for its subtle accents of warm coppery tones. Worn on a leather strap with a novel rubber-like finish, it supplements the watchmaker’s semi-mat alligator straps.

It perfectly matches the gray of the bridges suspending the Grande Seconde's delicate movement. Inside the 41 mm case lies the airy workings of this exclusive Jaquet Droz caliber where every component is meticulously stripped down to its minimum point of resistance. The fully suspended gear train is attached to the movement’s skeletonized bridges raised by an openworked oscillating weight that lets light shine clearly through.

The modern version, on the other hand, is the first time Jaquet Droz has used plasma ceramic on one of its timepieces. This plasma ceramic is made by transforming white ceramic with gas heated to 20,000°C, giving it a unique metallic glow without adding any metal fragments to the process.

This core modification maintains all the inherent properties of ceramic. It is just as hard, lightweight and scratch-resistant as high-tech ceramic, a material that has widely stood the test of time.

The gray anthracite theme carries over to the new plasma ceramic case held by a sleek and modern gray textile strap. It's a creation designed for collectors who simply cannot resist the seductive modernity of a watch whose design hasn't changed in almost 300 years: the Grande Seconde.

Jaquet Droz – LOVING BUTTERFLY Automaton Gold Edition

Jaquet DrozAUTOMATA Loving Butterfly Automaton Chinchilla Red Edition - Unique Piece

JAQUET DROZ GIVES ITS LOVING BUTTERFLY
A PLACE IN ETERNITY

This automaton takes flight once again in a limited series whose centerpiece is an exquisite mineral dial made of Chinchilla Red, a wood petrified 150 million years ago.

The silence is palpable as stunned collectors gasp in awe. Jaquet Droz is one of the only watchmakers in the world that crafts automatons. Quick on the heels of the onyx and meteorite models, today it unveils the latest version of its Loving Butterfly Automaton. This newest chapter in the company's 300-year exploration of natural fibers showcases its watchmaking mastery and artistry in a series strictly limited to 28 timepieces.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The animated objet d'art is inspired by a drawing titled Le papillon conduit par l’amour (Butterfly Driven by Love), which was sketched in 1774 by The Draughtsman, an automaton created by Henri-Louis Jaquet-Droz. Today, it is transformed into a three-dimensional journey of ancient mineral. Set against a backdrop of a forest of gold, the piece features a dial made from wood petrified 140-180 million years ago called Chinchilla Red, named after the far-eastern locale in Australia where it is found.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This mineral has a remarkable history. When dinosaurs ruled the Earth 150 million years ago and birds began to hatch, the first flower bloomed. That is also when Chinchilla Red came to be. It was formed by fir trees covered in volcanic ash that were swept away by lava. The product is an exceedingly rare and dense mineral. It takes countless hours of manual work just to make the surface smooth.

This new rendition magnifies the Cherub and the Butterfly, a classic metaphor for labors of love. The chariot symbolizes victory and the butterfly represents Cupid. Like the chariot, the butterfly comprises several dozen stationary and moving appliqués hand-etched by Jaquet Droz artisan jewelers. The scene unfolds on a veritable stage of nature with a set that actually rises up all around the dial. Multiple levels lend the piece a unique depth of perspective that invites the gaze to wander, drift and stray. A striking realism takes shape, proliferating with details that bring the scene to life.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The artful watch complication breathes life into an animated nature scene. The butterfly’s wings flutter in time, placed close against the sapphire crystal to make it seem like the butterfly is about to break free and fly out of the scenery. Even the wheels on the chariot turn, but not all of the spokes rotate, which creates an optical illusion that Pierre Jaquet-Droz began using nearly three centuries ago.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The figures are surrounded by a gold backdrop entirely crafted by hand. Each tree spans a mere 0.2 mm – its slender grooves carved one by one using purpose-designed tools– and is individually placed in its very own setting.

The Chinchilla Red limited series in petrified wood is a dance of chromatic unison. The autumnal hues of the stone blend with the warmth of the 18-carat red gold. Each of these one-of-a-kind timepieces has a slightly different mineral dial, a full glimpse into the exquisite workmanship of the Jaquet Droz Ateliers d’Art and the art of astonishment created in 1738.

“Some watches tell time, some tell a story.”

Part of the proceeds from the sales of the Loving Butterfly Automaton will go towards reforestation.

Deeply affected by global deforestation and in particular by the fires that have devastated Australia in recent months, Jaquet Droz has announced that part of the sales from the Loving Butterfly Chinchilla Red automaton will be donated to associations dedicated to reforestation and the preservation of endemic species such as “Plant a Tree for Me” or “One Tree Planted”. The timepiece presented today was made possible thanks to Australian wood petrified 150 million years ago. Jaquet Droz therefore affirms its commitment to give back what the nature is offering us, carried out within an eco-responsible, ethical and sharing framework, as represented by the Loving Butterfly Automaton Chinchilla Red’s, a true ode to love.

Jaquet Droz has been a sponsor of Only Watch since the beginning and donated to all seven editions. In recent years Only Watch has spearheaded fundraising efforts to fight the condition.

Of almost $40 million raised by the charity, 99% has gone to fund research. The auction is held every two years and has been a huge success time and again thanks to the generous sponsorship of watchmaking brands. Jaquet Droz is proud to be among the prestigious Fine Watchmaking brands that pledge one-of-a-kind timepieces to the Only Watch auction, time after time.

In 2019, Jaquet Droz has chosen to donate an exclusive variation of its new Grande Seconde Skelet-One Ceramic — a piece that marks a watershed in the centuries-old history of the Grande Seconde. In this one-of-a-kind edition, the rail-track, the gold hour, minute and seconds hands, and the rolled-edge hand-made strap are all reinterpreted in red.

Contrasting with the black ceramic of the case and hour ring, red has been chosen as the color of love — and the flag of Monaco, where the charity is based. The Only Watch traveling exhibition will visit no less than 10 cities next fall, affording collectors from around the world an opportunity to admire this one-of-a-kind timepiece, the Grande Seconde Skelet-One Ceramic for Only Watch.

ONLY WATCH COLLECTION
BEFORE THE
AUCTION?

ONLY WATCH UNVEILS THE 50 UNIQUE WATCHES THAT WILL BE AUCTIONED FOR THE 8TH EDITION OF THE BIENNIAL CHARITY AUCTION TO BENEFIT RESEARCH ON DUCHENNE MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY

Under the High Patronage of H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco and due to the initiative of Luc Pettavino, President of the Association Monégasque Contre les Myopathies, ONLY WATCH is proud to unveil today the names of the 52 watch brands participating in the 8th edition of the biennial charity auction benefitting research on Duchenne muscular dystrophy, as well as the 50 lots that will be auctioned.

This exceptional and unparalleled project supports the battle against a devastating myopathy that affects 1 in 3000 male births on the planet by funding research.

It is expected, this year again, to become the most talked-about topic in the watchmaking industry.

I am grateful to all the watchmaking groups and independent brands participating in this 2019 ONLY WATCH edition demonstrating dedication and heart through their creativity and craftmanship for this year’s auction which promises to be, once again, record-breaking”, says Luc Pettavino.

These 52 brands will offer sought-after rarities that can be accessed nowhere else. Unique pieces showcasing the best savoir-faire in the horology world in all of its diversity.

For the second time Christie’s is the auctioneer of choice on November 9 when the 50 one-of-a-kind timepieces will be auctioned at the Four Seasons Hôtel des Bergues at 2 pm (UTC+1).

Christie’s is looking forward working once more closely with the Association Monégasque contre les Myopathies on their 8th edition of ONLY WATCH, under the guidance of Luc Pettavino. On behalf of Christie’s, I would like to extend my sincere Thank You to all involved in making this project a priority and to be present on 9 November in Geneva to compete for one – or more – of the 50 unique and specially made timepieces for ONLY WATCH”, commented Earl of Snowdon, Honorary Chairman Christie’s EMEA

Ahead of the auction, this unprecedented watch collection will be exhibited to the public from 25 September 2019 to 9 November 2019, in 10 different cities around the world. This world tour will be starting in Monaco, during (and on the site of) the Monaco Yacht Show.

An achievement made possible by to the generous donation and participation of the 52 watch brands, the partners offering a variety of services and logistical support, the media offering substantial coverage and, of course, the auctioneer, Christie’s.

Jaquet Droz – GRANDE SECONDE Moon Swiss Serpentinite Edition

Jaquet DrozGRANDE SECONDE Moon Swiss Serpentinite Limited Edition

A NEW SPECIAL EDITION
SPOTLIGHTS SWITZERLAND,
MINERALS AND THE MOON

This latest variation incorporates rock fragments from the sheer slopes of the Matterhorn.

If watchmaking is born of astronomy, the Moon is the inspirational element. The Moon allowed ancient peoples to understand the early divisions of time and the passage of the seasons. It helped us grasp the notion of time that comes and goes at a steady pace: a concrete manifestation of the “cycles” that structure our comprehension of time to this day.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Waxing and waning through the phases of the new moon, first quarter, full moon and last quarter, the Moon brings poetry to watchmaking. It breathes into the mechanical the tender mystery of a celestial body, the secret of a satellite that remains –despite its relative proximity to us– largely unknown. The dark side of the Moon continues to be one of the great mysteries in space exploration.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

When Jaquet Droz set about adding a Moon Phase to its Grande Seconde, the challenge was to transcribe these dimensions of precision and poetry while preserving the esthetic codes of the piece centered on its signature “8” design. The brand chose to place the Moon at the heart of the perpetual calendar located inside the large seconds hand dial, forming a nexus between date and Moon (since the two are correlated) while staying true to the dial’s original esthetic. The inclusion of the Moon Phase allowed Jaquet Droz to design a multi-level dial that lends a new depth to the piece. To offset the standard error of a 59-tooth movement (an error of one day approximately every two years and eight months), the brand has developed the “mechanism 135” complication to ensure the movement maintains perfect accuracy for 122 consecutive years. The astronomical Moon phase is set using a discreet corrector positioned on the case at 8 o’clock.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Grande Seconde Moon Swiss Serpentinite is the heir to this destiny, and contributes two new dimensions. The first is the choice of serpentinite for the dial. This scaly-looking rock has a texture comparable to snake skin and offers a peculiar sensation to the touch. The brittle nature of the rock reveals the unique expertise of the Jaquet Droz craftsmen who cut it. Day after day, with meticulous skill, the craftsmen work to develop one of the brand’s eight codes: mineral dials. Jaquet Droz mineral dials capture the natural brilliance of the stones and magnify the treasures of the Earth.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Grande Seconde Moon Swiss Serpentinite is no exception. The Swiss particularity of this precise serpentinite is the other new dimension of the piece. The rock is taken from the sheer slopes of the Matterhorn, from a spot near the Hörnli Hut, the legendary base camp of the first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865. In creating for the Swiss market alone, this Grande Seconde Moon with a 43 mm serpentinite dial, Jaquet Droz demonstrates its attachment to its native land, and to the mythical and majestic Matterhorn that has become a symbol of Switzerland across the globe. In a similar way, Jaquet Droz brings across frontiers the values of Fine Watchmaking and its Philosophy of the Unique, as embodied by this Grande Seconde Moon Swiss Serpentinite issued in a numerus clausus of 88 pieces.

Jaquet Droz – GRANDE SECONDE Skelet-One Ceramic 280th Anniversary

Jaquet DrozGRANDE SECONDE Skelet-One Ceramic Black 280th Anniversary

PREVIEW NEW COLLECTION 2019:
A POWERFUL NEW TECHNICAL VERSION
IN BLACK AND BLUE

Sheathed in black ceramic, boasting a dial with blued steel screws and white gold indexes, and worn on a blue canvas strap, the Grande Seconde Skelet-One Ceramic by Jaquet Droz solidifies its modern, masculine identity.

Designed over two and half centuries ago, the Grande Seconde by Jaquet Droz never ceases to amaze. Marrying every facet of its time and era, this ever-evolving piece reinvents details and finishes with each variation, to both surprise and astound.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Its “Skelet-One” skeleton version, presented in 2018, marked yet another break: it was the first time the Grande Seconde did away with its dial. In its place: light, lightness and transparency. The Grande Seconde saw both its architecture unveiled and its power laid bare. Sculptural and enhanced, the Grande Seconde Skelet-One began a new chapter in the history of time as told by Jaquet Droz.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Today, the piece returns with a new feature that gives it added modernity: a ceramic case. With a diameter of 41.5 mm, it’s in perfect harmony with the Grande Seconde Skelet-One’s open movement structure, featuring a black “NAC” coating that intensifies its power and modern, masculine character. Its straight lines contrast with the ceramic case’s skillful finishing, with a satin-finished top just like its lugs. In contrast, its polished sides foster a play of light that is amplified by a double sapphire "glass box” on the top and bottom, offering the largest possible opening onto the skeleton movement. Watch lovers will notice that the movement plate stretches all the way around the case, which itself does away with the casing ring. With this new construction, the gear train is entirely suspended and fixed to the skeletonized bridges that cross over the movement.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The latter has been the subject of many finishing details that are evocative of the Fine Watchmaking category to which the Grande Seconde Skelet-One Ceramic belongs. In pure watchmaking tradition and a clear nod to its heritage, the skeleton movement features blued steel screws that fix together the stainless steel hour circle and the sapphire dial. Each of these screws is “indexed,” meaning they are turned towards the center of the dial.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

For this new Skelet-One Ceramic version, the indexes are made of 18K white gold and the hours and minutes dial is crafted from steel. Vertically brushed, it catches every ray of light, ensuring perfect readability. As for the grande seconde dial, it is made from sapphire to offer an unobstructed view of each of the movement’s details. With the same objective of total transparency, the 18K white gold oscillating weight has been entirely skeletonized to avoid masking the slightest detail of the caliber, which makes a circular revolution around the case. The watch is worn on a blue canvas bracelet. Powerful and exclusive, the Grande Seconde Skelet-One Ceramic continues the centuries’ old odyssey of telling time at Jaquet Droz.
