The 2014 premiere of Glashütte Original's newly developed Calibre 37 integrated chronograph movement triggered great excitement: its innovative, compact and highly functional design, exquisite precision and reliable performance earned the new column wheel chronograph immediate respect in the world of watch experts and connoisseurs.

The automatic movement made its debut at the heart of two variants of the Senator Chronograph Panorama Date: a superbly finished platinum and a warm, red gold version. Today Glashütte Original adds some sporty charm to the line-up. A distinctive new version of the Senator Chronograph Panorama Date in stainless steel now complements the elegant inaugural models.

A distinctive chronograph 
presents its sporty side

The new Senator Chronograph Panorama Date captures the eye with the irresistible allure of its contemporary design: the deep black dial is set off by high-contrast white print and enhanced by the generous use of radiant blue Super-LumiNova, which highlights the white gold hour, minute and stop seconds hands, Roman numerals at hours 6 and 12 and all hour indexes, permitting excellent legibility even in the dark.

Legibility also is a distinctive feature of Glashütte Original's unique Panorama Date. It is positioned centrally in the lower half of the dial beneath the upper-half triad formed by 30-minute and 12-hour chronograph counters and the small seconds display, in which the power reserve display is charmingly integrated.

A substantial, alternately polished and satin-brushed 42 mm stainless steel case adds cool and convincing elegance to this robust, casually stylish and sporty new version. The German manufactory presents the new model with a choice of three different bracelets: the black calfskin model is sewn with blue thread, carefully chosen to complement the dial's distinguished blue Super-LumiNova.

A second strap in black rubber is adorned with a lightly textured, laser-cut decoration; both calfskin and rubber versions are available with foldover clasp or traditional pin buckle closures.

A third bracelet, fashioned in polished and satin-brushed stainless steel, is easily adjusted to suit the owner's preference using the patented, innovative closure, whose millimeter-precise 8 settings assure a superbly comfortable fit.

The Art of the Chronograph:  
Calibre 37-01

The manufactory Calibre 37-01 chronograph movement was developed to meet the German watchmaker’s most demanding standards of functionality and optimised for everyday use. Its fully integrated, compact construction with flyback mechanism and 12-hour chronograph counter make it a reliable, precise and aesthetically satisfying companion for day-to-day wear.

Its ease of use and finely-tuned technical solutions guarantee simplicity of handling and excellent rate precision. The automatic manufactory movement is a persuasive piece of work, its distinctive attributes designed and integrated to form a unique synthesis.

Absolute Reliability

The 4Hz automatic manufactory movement assures maximum functionality through its efficient and compact method of construction. An example is the switch lever; in the Calibre 37 series chronographs, in contrast to previous designs, the lever is comprised of only one part.

The movement thus guarantees the highest possible switching security, with error potential and susceptibility to interference effectively reduced to near zero. The chronograph’s reliability is also enhanced by the space-saving coupling clutch, which operates by means of an oscillating pinion. It was designed to travel the same short path when both engaging and disengaging the clutch.

A number of new features enhance the new Senator Chronograph Panorama Date, all designed to assure reliability and robust day-to-day performance, no matter how demanding the owner's activities. Water resistance has been increased from 5 bar to 10 and further enhanced by a new screw-down crown, while the dial's generous use of blue Super-LumiNova highlights and high-contrast white detail assure superb legibility under all lighting conditions.

Maximum precision

Sophisticated technical solutions assure the new chronograph’s particularly high degree of precision. Adjustment is handled without a regulator, using four gold screws on the balance wheel to enable a continuous, and thus more precise, performance of the watch over an especially long period of time. Numerous other components and functions contribute to assure the precision of the manufactory Calibre 37-01.

70-hour power reserve

With a power reserve of 70 hours when fully wound, the automatic Calibre 37-01 represents an absolute peak value in the realm of mechanical chronographs. In order to keep the performance and amplitude stable over the entire period of time, a new oscillation system with low energy requirements was developed, effectively governed by a single spring barrel. Optimal translation between spring barrel and oscillation system assures extremely stable and precise performance with no deviations over 70 hours.

A diamond cabochon transforms jewellery of the crown, which is also very easy to use. The time zone wheel displays a choice of 37 world time zones, each indicated by the official IATA location code designating a key international airport in the zone.

The 24 time zones that are aligned at full-hour offsets with Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) present a black IATA code in the DST or STD window at 8 o’clock; 10 time zones aligned with GMT at half-hour offsets appear in blue; 3 remaining zones at quarter- or three-quarter hour offsets from GMT are represented by the relevant IATA location code in red; the color coding allows one to identify the offset from GMT at a glance.

The lacquered silver-grained dial features a black railroad chapter ring framing black Roman numerals, with symmetrical placement along the central vertical axis of the home time dial at 12, central hour and minute hands and the small seconds dial at 6 o’clock.

The 12-hour home time dial presents a black minute ring and Arabic numerals, the small seconds a black railroad chapter ring and black Arabic numerals. Along the central horizontal axis the destination time day/night dial at 9 o’clock shows a starry night sky on the lower half and a yellow sun on the upper, complemented at 3 o’clock by the Glashütte Original logo.

Roman and Arabic numerals, railroad chapter and minute rings are all laser-engraved and galvanised in black. The central poire hour and minute hands are fashioned in blued steel, as are the home time hour and minute hands, the small seconds hand, and the destination time day/night hand.

The 72-hour power reserve indicator, located within the home time dial, is in black against an ivory ground; the home time day/night indicator shows a black dot by night and a light dot by day. The distinguished Glashütte Original Panorama Date display presents the date in black Arabic numerals against an ivory ground, at 4 o’clock. The dial is protected by a domed sapphire crystal, anti-reflective on both sides. The heart of the Senator Cosmopolite is the new Calibre 89-02 automatic movement. Its exceptional mechanics are set in motion when the traveller wishes to change the destination time. If heading east (forwards in time), he turns the crown at 4 o’clock clockwise until the IATA code representing the destination time zone appears in the relevant DST or STD window.

If travelling west (back in time), the traveller turns the crown counter-clockwise. In both cases, the central hour and minute hands jump ahead (or back) in 15-minute intervals until the destination time zone’s IATA code appears in the relevant DST or STD window.

At this point, the traveller need make no further changes: the central hour and minute hands now indicate the correct time at destination, augmented by the correct day/night indication at 9 o’clock – and by the correct display of the date at destination. If the time at the chosen destination is ahead or back a day, the Panorama Date display changes accordingly. Thus the new Calibre 89-02 transforms its spectacular mechanical complexity into compelling simplicity of use: a masterpiece of fine German watchmaking from Glashütte Original.

The 89-02 operates at 4 Hz (28,800 A/h) and features an off-centre rotor. The oscillation system is regulated by using four gold screws on the balance rim; the absence of a regulator on the spring allows the movement to run continuously over a much longer period of time, resulting in increased precision. The Calibre 89-02 is comprised of over 400 individual components.

The Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date debuts at Baselworld 2014 in three versions with dials in galvanised ruthenium, galvanized silver or blue. All three timepieces feature the Seventies collection’s characteristic soft-cornered square stainless steel case and bezel complemented by a range of bracelets in stainless steel, leather and rubber.

The Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date renews the spirit of the collection, presenting essential, elegant dial visuals: the small seconds dial with black and white power reserve indicator appears at 9 o’clock, the 30 minute counter at 3 o’clock.

A somewhat smaller, very stylish hour counter shows Arabic numerals from 1 to 12 in a window centred just below 12 o'clock, harmoniously counter-balanced on the lower half of the dial by the Saxon watchmaker’s signature Panorama Date display.

A simplified column wheel mechanism

The new chronograph movement presents a simplified column wheel mechanism with fewer
individual parts. The oscillation system features a bi-directional rotor; the 70-hour power reserve is
managed by a single spring barrel.

Regulation is performed using four gold screws on the balance rim; the absence of a regulator on the spring allows the movement to run continuously over a much longer period of time, resulting in increased precision.

The chronograph start and stop functions are activated by the pusher at the upper right side of the case, the flyback mechanism by the pusher at the lower right.

Pressing the flyback pusher halts the on-going chronographic time measurement; the 12-hour chronograph disc and the chronograph minute and second hands “fly” back to zero. The time measurement does not stop, however, but rather begins immediately a new measurement as soon as the flyback pusher is released.

Emblematic finishings

The new manufactory chronograph from Glashütte Original presents characteristic features and
finishing for which the Saxon watchmaker is famous. A sapphire crystal, antireflective on both
sides, protects the dial side, while a second sapphire crystal set in the case back opens up the
automatic movement for closer inspection.

Among the exquisite features on view are the rotor and chronograph bridges mounted on the Glashütte three-quarter plate; Glashütte stripe finish on the automatic bridge, blued screws, and the central skeletonized 21-ct gold rotor with double-G logo.

Also of interest to connoisseurs is the novel oscillation system regulated by four gold screws, easily visible through the case back’s sapphire crystal.

The Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date models are available with a choice of straps: blue, grey and black Louisiana Alligator leather straps complement the blue, ruthenium and silver dial models respectively; a functional black rubber strap is available for all three, as is the sporty stainless steel link bracelet.
