 A RARE SIGHTAN ENDURING LOOK

Girard-Perregaux is pleased to unveil the Lau-reato Green Ceramic Aston Martin Edition, the first time a Laureato has featured a green ceramic case and bracelet. This is the latest collaboration between the Swiss Maison and the British marque, two companies that have designed products that have stood the test of time.

While some of the materials used for these new co-branded watches may be ultra-modern, the essence of the inaugural Laureato has been respected. Offered in a choice of two case sizes (42mm and 38mm), each reference is a limited edition and thereby destined to remain a rare sight.

Sleek, contemporary and notably elegant, the design of the Laureato Green Ceramic Aston Martin Edition encompasses some elements inspired by Aston Martin cars. Powerful engines, sleek contours and light weight construction are virtues synonymous with the British firm’s products. It is this lat-ter trait which encouraged Girard-Perregaux to equip this new model with skeletonised ‘baton’ type hour and minute hands, both light and functional.

The watch dial is presented in a cross-hatch design, a diamond-like pattern found on the ‘AM’ logo (1921-1926) as well as the quilted seats found in some of the car marque’s high-performance vehicles.

A productive relationship

Some of the finest luxury products are crafted with time-served hands. These scarce human skills, often amassed over many years, imbue an item with a distinctive character and an enduring quality. Such pro-ducts are created free of concessions, using the finest components and they inevitably take an inordinate amount of time to make.

Both Aston Martin and Girard-Perregaux operate within this rarefied world of excellence, constructing rare objects that confer lasting appeal. In 2021, these two prestigious marques entered into a multi-year collaboration agreement and have since created a number of limited-edition, co-branded products.

British Racing Green

In 1900, a race took place in France, the Gordon Bennett Cup. Cars would negotiate public roads between Paris and Lyon. Initially, various colours were assigned to cars based on the nationality of the driver, however, this would sub-sequently change and eventually the hue of the car’s bodywork was determined by the nationality of the racing team.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

As a result, French cars were presented in blue, Italian cars were red, Belgian cars were yellow, German cars were white/silver and British cars were dressed in green. This latter hue has since graced many British race cars and is now employed on pre-sent-day Aston Martin cars. It therefore seemed logical that a co-branded model should be dressed in green, a colour that evokes thoughts of performance and success.

This latter attribute allows the craftspeople at Girard-Perregaux to finish the ceramic components with a combination of polished and satin finished surfaces, an endearing characteristic common to all Laureato models.

The green ceramic components are particularly hard, up to seven times harder than steel, delivering incredible scratch resistance, a quality that will ensure the watch retains its showroom-fresh appearance for years to come. Another attribute of the green ceramic components is that they will never age or fade with the passage of time.

Furthermore, ceramic is unaffected by changes in ambient temperature, it’s light, hypoallergenic and proves remarkably smooth, all factors that deliver extraordinary wearer comfort.

Technical ceramic, a complex attire

Launched in 1975, the first Laureato featured an octagonal bezel that sat atop a circular plinth, which in turn was positioned above an angular tonneau-shaped case.

The new Laureato Green Ceramic Aston Martin Edition respects these timeless elements but employs ultra-modern ceramic for the brace-let and case. This lightweight material com-prises zirconium oxide and metallic oxides (the latter imbues the material with its distinctive green hue).

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The zirconium oxide selected by Girard-Perregaux is composed of an extremely fine powder, made of microbeads, each measuring mere fractions of a micron in diameter (1 micron (µ) = 0.001mm). By using this specific grade of microbead, the structure of the bracelet and case exhibit a notably homogenous appearance.

A shared philosophy

The timeless design of the Laureato has attrac-ted the admiration of enlightened commen-tators and watch aficionados alike. Likewise, Aston Martin has repeatedly shown its prowess for sculpting iconic shapes that have never lost their eye-appeal. Whether it’s a DB4 of the ear-ly 60s, a DBS V8 of the 70s or a modern-day Vantage, all models share the same attributes of elegance, quality and performance.

Patrick Pruniaux, CEO of Girard-Perregaux, remarked “From the outset, the design of the Laureato was distinctive, yet cohesive. Its styling encompassed geometric, clean-cut lines while exhibiting a slightly gentle character. Contrasting polished and satin finished surfaces, an ergonomic integrated brace-let and, of course, as always, an in-house movement… these are the essential ingredients which have made the Laureato a remarkable success. The same ingredients are much in evidence with the new Laureato Green Ceramic Aston Martin Edition along with the addition of an interesting, highly contemporary material.”

Marek Reichman, Executive Vice President and Chief Creative Officer, Aston Martin Lagonda, added: “Our goal was to conceive an advanced luxury product. Patrick and I spent a lot of time talking about the folklore of the Laureato and the design play between shape and proportion of its iconic bezel. When he shared GP’s exploration into the optical properties of technical ceramics, microbeads and microns, I became quite enchanted by this idea of the past becoming the future. We’re always exploring combinations of technology, colour, and materials in Aston Martin sports cars to enrich performance, functionality and owner enjoyment. Together we’ve fused these ideas and attributes to generate this cool new Laureato Green Ceramic Aston Martin Edition.

Behind the green

Both versions of the Laureato Green Ceramic Aston Martin Edition are housed in a slender case. The 42mm model is fitted with the Calibre GP01800, while the 38mm version is equipped with the Calibre GP03300. Both in-house movements are self-winding and can be admired though a see-through case-back, personalised with the Aston Martin logo.

Consistent with the Maison’s reputation for making wonderful expressions of Haute Horlogerie, each movement is beautifully appointed. Circular graining features on the main plate, while other components are endowed with bevelling, mirror-polishing, satin finish, snailing, sunray finish and various engravings.

The bridges are decorated with straight Côtes de Genève and the oscillating weight is embellished with circular Côtes de Genève. Lastly, the movements have a power reserve of at least 46 hours (38mm) and 54 hours (42mm).

GIRARD-PERREGAUX – LAUREATO Absolute Light & Fire Edition

GIRARD-PERREGAUXLAUREATO Absolute Light  & Fire Sapphire and Titanium 44mm Limited Edition

Girard-Perregaux Laureato Absolute Light & Shade
and Laureato Absolute Light & Fire

The powerful silhouette of the LAUREATO

La Chaux-de-Fonds, January 17th (10AM CET), 2023 – Since the inaugural version of the Laureato was unveiled in 1975, the model has masterfully united contrasting elements to glorious effect. Housed in a metallised sapphire crystal case, the Laureato Absolute Light & Shade juxtaposes curves and lines, modern and traditional and, lastly, aesthetics and functionality. Girard-Perregaux has also created a special reference featuring a distinctive translucent red case to mark the advent of the Chinese New Year.

Limited to just 18 pieces, the Laureato Absolute Light & Fire will be presented worldwide for the celebration.

Captivating contrasts

When Girard-Perregaux released the inaugural version of the Laureato in 1975, its masterful blend of different shapes proved distinctive, yet harmonious. Its looks complemented a lounge suit but also worked with casual attire. Over the years, the Maison has introduced new complications and worked with a variety of materials and colours, but the Laureato has always remained instantly recognisable and has always retained its timeless looks.

In 2019, Girard-Perregaux unveiled the Laureato Absolute line. Many of the Laureato’s recognisable design codes were carried over to this bolder interpretation of the 1975 model, including the legendary octagonal bezel sat atop a circular ring. However, the Laureato Absolute line also incorporated an integrated rubber strap, along with many additional changes, some more subtle than others, ultimately contributing to the contemporary appearance of the Laureato collection.

Now, Girard-Perregaux is pleased to unveil the new Laureato Absolute Light & Shade, a model that draws on the Maison’s amassed watchmaking know-how and employs its vast expertise working with innovative materials. Measuring 44 mm in diameter, the case of this latest model is made from metallised sapphire crystal, endowing the watch with a fascinating brilliance. On one hand, the model exhibits a visually light appearance and bestows transparency, while conversely it looks dark and reflective. This visual lightness is accompanied by a low mass of just 85 grams. Throughout its composition, the watch juxtaposes contrasting characteristics, distinguishing this contemporary expression of fine watchmaking as quite unique.

A cutting-edge case, a traditional respect for craftsmanship

In order to create a watch with a sapphire crystal case, a boule of sapphire crystal must be created using a technique termed ‘the Kyropoulos growth method’. This protracted growth method transforms alumina powder into a solid block of sapphire crystal, a process that takes up to 8 weeks.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Thereafter, the block is cut into small discs which are then skilfully machined to form the bezel, case middle and caseback. Once this phase is completed, the parts need to be thermally treated and then polished. The components are carefully screened, only those corresponding to the specifications and without inclusion are selected.

The sapphire crystal components are then subjected to a metallisation treatment. This process involves applying a surface treatment to the parts within a vacuum. Ultimately, this suffuses them with a smoked appearance. The creation of this sapphire crystal case requires 170 hours of complex work.

A fusion of aesthetics and functionality

Since Constant Girard created La Esmeralda, the Maison has repeatedly fused aesthetics and functionality, creating numerous watches that showcase the company’s horological prowess and mastery of shapes.
The new Laureato Absolute Light & Shade upholds this ethos by revealing the movement to glorious effect courtesy of the sapphire crystal case. The mainplate of the in-house movement, the Calibre GP01800-1143, is octagonal-shaped, a respectful nod to the Laureato’s famous bezel. The skeletonised movement reveals a plethora of parts normally hidden from view, providing a fascinating vista of curves and lines enriched with pockets of light and shade. The barrel is openworked, affording sight of the mainspring in various degrees of tension. Likewise, the balance wheel can be seen oscillating to-and-fro in a bewitching dance.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The gold oscillating weight is openworked, inviting the wearer to admire the bridges below. Upholding Girard-Perregaux’s reputation for refined finishing, the NAC-treated bridges and mainplate incorporate sandblasting, traits-tirés, circular satin finishing and bevelling, with no less than 55 hand-polished inner angles.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Refinement is a reoccurring characteristic with the Calibre GP01800-1143. It is fitted with a variable-inertia balance. Most watches feature an index regulator which alters the effective length of the hairspring, making the watch run faster or slower. With a variable-inertia balance, the length of the hairspring is fixed and the rate is altered by adjusting the inertia weights fitted to the spokes of the balance wheel. This system delivers greater stability as well as superior shock resistance.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Powerful and elegant, openworked hour and minute hands ensure excellent readability. A three-dimensional ring sitting between the bezel and the movement, plays host to the GP logo at 12 o’clock and the remaining 11 indexes. Girard-Perregaux has employed a unique construction method, obviating the need for a conventional casing ring. The case and the movement are assembled on a single axis, from the caseback to the bezel, by a very specific screw system. The demanding design of these screws requires micron-level precision to hold the different components together.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Two black, PVD-treated titanium lugs are integrated within the case, uniting the watch head with a black rubber strap. This arrangement not only looks modern, but also ensures the strap is optimally positioned on the wrist, thereby conferring impressive wearer comfort. The lugs incorporate satin-finished surfaces with polished angles. The strap is made from FKM rubber, a material that delivers superior suppleness and resistance when contrasted with conventional rubber. In order to further heighten the visual allure of the strap, its appearance is enriched with a fabric effect façade. The buckle is fitted with a micro-adjustment system, allowing the wearer to fine-tune the union between the strap and their wrist. The crown is made of polished and sandblasted PVD-treated titanium, echoing the appearance of the lugs.

A great start to the year

Paying homage to the Chinese New Year, the new Laureato Light & Fire reveals a deep and captivating red colour. An intense red that plays with light, like the burning embers of a flame. Limited to just 18 pieces, the model shares much in common with the Laureato Absolute Light & Shade but is housed in a new polycrystalline material named YAG. Similar to sapphire crystal, this translucent material is hard and scratch-resistant, but also offers a variety of dark shades. This latter characteristic was particularly important to the Maison’s design team who were keen to dress the limited-edition timepiece in a deep red vibrant hue, a colour that evokes thoughts of energy, vitality and prosperity.

The Laureato Absolute Light & Shade and The Laureato Absolute Light & Fire will go on sale in April 2023 and will be available worldwide in all authorised Girard-Perregaux retailers.

Girard-Perregaux - COSMOS Tourbillon Edition

GIRARD-PERREGAUX BRIDGES COSMOS Tourbillon Titanium 47mm Zodiac Dial Edition Unique Piece 2022

The Cosmos performs its swansong with three unique creations

La Chaux-de-Fonds, Monday, December 19th, 2022 – First released in👉 2019, the Cosmos wonderfully demonstrates Girard-Perregaux’s horological prowess.  Equipped with three exceptional complications, the model encompasses technical virtuosity, uncompromising finishing and artisanal craftsmanship.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Now, Girard-Perregaux has chosen to create three unique versions of this model featuring aventurine, obsidian and onyx, and, lastly, a combination of spectrolite and aventurine. These three models are the final edition of the Cosmos model and serve as a fitting swansong for this exceptional watch.

Out of this world

The Cosmos is equipped with three complications, including a tourbillon, a mechanism designed to counter the adverse influence of gravity on the regulating organ. Presented at the base of the dial, the tourbillon features a titanium lyre-shaped cage. This is held in position by Girard-Perregaux’s signature Neo Bridge, a contemporary interpretation of Constant-Girard’s famous ‘arrow-shaped’ bridge of the 19th century.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Complementing the tourbillon, the watch is equipped with two additional complications, a terrestrial globe and a celestial globe. The terrestrial globe, located at 3 o’clock, serves as a day/night indicator. Positioned opposite, at 9 o’clock, a celestial globe displays the constellations of the Zodiac.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

All three unique pieces feature two-part dials, formed of aventurine, obsidian or spectrolite. Likewise, the globes are made of black aventurine, black aventurine or onyx. Each set of globes is endued with golden micro-painting, painstakingly executed by hand, a process that takes no less than 14 hours to complete.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Sun revolves around the Earth every 24 hours, the time it takes for the terrestrial globe to rotate 360°. Celestial time equals the rotation period of a celestial object, namely 23 hours and 56 minutes. The different pace of each globe is barely perceptible to the human eye, however, Girard Perregaux has ensured that both globes rotate at the correct speed, demonstrating its unrelenting attention to detail.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Unlike the real world, viewing constellations on the dial of this model is not impeded by light pollution or limited light.

A sense of cohesion

A notable characteristic of the Cosmos is that the dial elements are arranged with due consideration to symmetry. The resultant dial layout is balanced and cohesive. Eager to augment this sense of balance, Girard-Perregaux has dispensed with a conventional crown.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Instead, an innovative winding and setting system is located on the reverse of the timepiece emulating the styling of pocket watches from yesteryear. The setting system features three engravings, all of which are filled with luminescent ceramic, indicating the purpose of each bélière.

An exemplar of Haute Horlogerie

Since it was founded in 1791, Girard-Perregaux has become known for crafting exquisite expressions of Haute Horlogerie. Throughout its history, the Maison has repeatedly united exceptional chronometric performance, bewitching aesthetics and extraordinary craftsmanship. The Cosmos upholds this reputation.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Cosmos is equipped with the Calibre GP093020, a hand-wound movement enriched with high-end finishing. The titanium Neo Bridge is black PVD-treated, sandblasted and incorporates hand-bevelling.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Similarly, the mainplate is black PVD-treated and embellished with circular-graining, sandblasting and bevelling. The lyre-shaped tourbillon cage is made of lightweight titanium, hence it requires less energy to rotate, a factor that contributes to the model’s impressive power reserve of at least 57 hours.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In contrast to the flat sapphire crystal to the rear, the front of the watch is endowed with a sapphire anti-reflective ‘box’, providing a three-dimensional view of the dial area. Its domed shape requires four to five times more material to shape and polish.

The Cosmos bids farewell

The Cosmos fuses the worlds of design, Métiers d’Art and watchmaking excellence. These three models incorporate sumptuous materials, hand-painted globes and a high quotient of watchmaking know-how. However, ultimately, all goods things must come to an end and these three pieces represent the last chapter in what has been a fascinating story.

All three Cosmos unique pieces will be sold exclusively by The Hour Glass as of December 2022.
