Step by step, Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud is producing all-new variations to its collections as it adds carefully thought-out touches to its timepieces. The new FB 1.3-1 “Sapphire Blue” model is no exception. Comprising just 5 numbered watches, this edition offers a new chromatic harmony, structured around an intense, silky translucent blue dial. Its understated sheen pervades every line and detail of the 44 x 13 mm 950 platinum case, featuring mounted grey ceramic lugs.

The inner workings are also redolent with the magic of this new finishing. Seasoned collectors will appreciate all the detailing that characterises the exclusive nature of this limited edition: the timepiece has been fitted with the FB-T.FC-2 calibre, featuring chamfered sapphire crystal half-bridges. The arrow-shaped tourbillon bridge is blue-tinted – a finishing achieved by means of Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD), a process in which thin films are laid down in a vacuum, ensuring high performance over time and preserving all the finesse and details of the finishes. In addition to this colouring, the new blue dial is decorated with fine lines echoing the blue-tinted hours and minutes hands – as well as the indicator hand for the 53-hour power reserve, located at 9 o’clock.

As can be expected, the chronometric properties of the FB 1.3-1 “Sapphire Blue” movement are outstanding. Drawing inspiration from marine chronometers, of which Ferdinand Berthoud was one of the most legendary clockmaker, the FB-T.FC-2 calibre is regulated by a centre seconds tourbillon and a fusee and chain constant force mechanism. The barrel and inverted fusee are suspended, and in a patented arrangement, are held in place on just one side. As is usual with fusee and chain mechanisms, the barrel is fitted with a Maltese Cross stop system. This limits the number of winding turns of the mainspring to half a dozen or so, ensuring that only the most stable part of the spring is used; this technique increases the timepiece’s accuracy, as certified by the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC).

The architecture of the FB-T.FC-2 calibre is unique in contemporary watchmaking. The manual wind movement features 15 bridges and 3 half-bridges in chamfered sapphire crystal, held in place by polished titanium pillars supporting the mechanical components. This structure, characteristic of eighteenth-century marine chronometers, allows the four portholes of the FERDINAND BERTHOUD FB 1.3-1 chronometer to reveal the innards of the watch. The same stylistic requirement has been applied to the design of all the components, and more especially to ensure the symmetrical visual balance of the movement’s main assemblies.

The power reserve indication mechanism on the FB 1.3-1 model is very sophisticated. A truncated cone travels up and down an endless screw connected to the barrel. At the tip of this suspended cone sits a feeler spindle: an arm with a jewel on the end, its position on the cone indicating how wound up the watch is. This feeler spindle is in turn linked to the power reserve hand; the corresponding graduations are engraved on the mainplate and viewed through an opening in the dial. This audacious mechanism, showcased by its sapphire crystal bridges, allows the movement’s power reserve to be indicated with great precision.

The FB 1.3-1 chronometer has also been fitted with a hand-stitched, rolled-edged alligator leather strap, made from a single piece of leather, together with a two-strand adjustable-length PT950 platinum folding safety clasp.

Irrespective of their position and function, all the components have been fully hand -finished using traditional tools in Chronométrie FERDINAND BERTHOUD’s workshops. To ensure a highly detailed inspection of the finishings, a 6x magnifying glass is used to carry out quality control. At that level of magnification, no detail, however minuscule, can go unnoticed – and no error, flaw, or imperfection is tolerated. Therein lies the ethos of watchmaking excellence so dear to the heart of Chronométrie FERDINAND BERTHOUD, purveyor of chronometers for explorers.

FERDINAND BERTHOUD – Chronomètre FB 1R.6-1 Tourbillon Edition

FERDINAND BERTHOUDChronomètre FB 1R.6-1 Tourbillon Steel 44mm Limited Edition 2019

A regulator to stand the test of time

With its original regulator-type display and its ultra-resistant carburised stainless steel case, the Chronomètre FB-1R.6-1 enriches the Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud collection. This new presentation radically transforms an exceptional timepiece whose complications, together with the quality of its construction and production, remain true to their underlying philosophy. Its FB-T.FC.R tourbillon calibre with fusee-and-chain transmission can be admired through a sapphire crystal case-back and two lateral portholes, offering a unique view inside this outstanding chronometer.

Like the previous editions of the Chronomètre FB 1, its movement is equipped with horological complications inspired by the scientific instruments represented by Ferdinand Berthoud’s marine chronometers. The appearance of the Chronomètre Ferdinand Berthoud FB 1R.7-1 takes its cues from the Marine Chronometer No. 7. The philosophy upheld by Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud involves transposing into contemporary language the pursuit of excellence undertaken by the master horologist appointed Clockmaker to the French King and Navy. A rare and unusual-looking timepiece, the Chronomètre Ferdinand Berthoud FB 1R.6-1 is a comprehensive horological work, issued in a 20-piece limited edition intended for discerning and passionate collectors.

A philosophical approach

The different versions of the Chronomètre Ferdinand Berthoud FB 1 stem from an innovative horological approach. The design, movement, finishing and everything composing this chronometer with tourbillon and constant force are highly specific and reflect an uncompromising commitment to excellence. Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud is driven by the vision of its president, Karl-Friedrich Scheufele. The latter has patiently built up an important collection of objects relating to time measurement within the L.U.CEUM museum in Fleurier, including a number of works by Ferdinand Berthoud.

In paying worthy tribute to this native of the Val-de-Travers, Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud has a dedicated team, a specific development process and authentic expertise in a wide range of skills. In the case of the Chronomètre Ferdinand Berthoud FB 1R.6-1, the inspiration stems directly from Ferdinand Berthoud’s research on his Marine Chronometer no. 7. The latter housed a number of solutions that improved the operating principles of its longitude watches. Among them was its display that differed from the usual rules governing regulators – which assign a different place on the dial to the hours, minutes and seconds displays – by the use of a large central seconds hand.

An evolving case

The Chronomètre Ferdinand Berthoud FB 1R.6-1 adds some unusual details and a unique presentation to the aesthetic and technical characteristics of the previous versions. It is still a 44 mm-diameter watch, featuring a less than 14 mm-thick case that sits naturally and comfortably on the wrist. It is composed of a steel cylinder housing the movement. The molecular structure of this steel has been reinforced by a thermo-chemical process involving the diffusion of vapourphase carbon, thereby guaranteeing an exceptional surface hardness of 1200 Vickers and making it extremely robust. It is also exceptionally corrosion-resistant and biocompatible.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The case features two octagonal-shaped stainless steel side pieces, giving it a characteristic shape including two lateral portholes at 2 and 11 o’clock - providing a chance to admire the chain-and-fusee mechanism in action. These two openings are complemented by a screw-down stainless steel case-back fitted with glare-proofed sapphire crystal enabling observers to appreciate the high-quality finishing lavished on the FB-T.FC-R movement.

The knurled 9mm-diameter stainless steel crown bearing a black ceramic medallion ensures smooth winding of the movement endowed with a 53-hour power reserve.

An exceptional regulator

The novel construction of the Chronomètre Ferdinand Berthoud IR.6-1 sets it apart from all existing regulator-type displays. Instead of featuring a high-up opening providing a view of the tourbillon and the fourth wheel (driving the seconds) as on previous versions, the Chronomètre Ferdinand Berthoud FB 1R.6-1 has a mostly solid dial. The latter is in fact the rear side of the complication plate that provides the regulator-type display.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

It is made of nickel silver, vertically satin-brushed by hand and black rhodium-plated. Of the three small apertures, the first serves to show the hours, offset at 2 o’clock and appearing on a glare-proofed sapphire crystal disc bearing transferred Arabic numerals striking a pleasing contrast with a white background. The second opening features an original power-reserve display mechanism, distinguished by a large dial cut-out revealing part of the finely sandblasted and black rhodium-plated mainplate. Located in the centre of the finely chamfered, bead-blasted and black rhodium-plated minutes counter, the third aperture displays a hand-engraved “pyramid” motif inspired by an openworked Ferdinand Berthoud astronomical clock belonging to the L.U.CEUM collection.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Meanwhile, the seconds appear around the rim of the dial on a flat inner bezel ring made of black rhodium-plated, bead-blasted and chamfered nickel silver.

Finally, the nature and provenance of the Chronomètre Ferdinand Berthoud FB 1R.6-1 can be read off on this large dial, engraved with the inscription “Chronomètre Val-de-Travers Suisse”. More than merely representing a signature or an appellation of origin, it proudly proclaims the model’s identity.

Suspended mobile cone power-reserve display and spiral-spring

A patent has been filed for the extremely sophisticated power-reserve indication mechanism. Visible through a cut-out in the half-bridge on the case-back side, a truncated cone moves up and down along an arbor connected to the barrel. This suspended cone is topped by a feeler spindle in the form of a mobile arm tipped with a watch jewel. The latter’s position on the cone reflects the barrel’s state of wind.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The feeler spindle in turn transmits the quantity of energy accumulated by the mainspring to a set of finely chamfered and rhodium-plated flat levers visible through a cut-out in the regulator plate. Its role is to amplify the displacement of the power-reserve hand. A spiral spring placed at the far end of its travel exercises a force on the base of the power-reserve hand. This spring serves to compensate for the play between the various components of this mechanism and to display the power reserve with peerless precision.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

A number of complex mathematical calculations and various tests served to fine-tune the geometry of this spring, made from a nickel-phosphorous alloy in order to guarantee the concentric deployment of the coils in all states of winding and unwinding, and thereby to avoid any unattractive distortion that might also be detrimental to the smooth running of the mechanism. This ingenious device is imbued with the experimental spirit of Ferdinand Berthoud himself, who revelled in exploring solutions resolutely off the beaten track.

 A slender, finely structured movement

The FB-T.FC.R calibre is built according to a unique architectural concept. This hand-wound movement features 18 nickel silver bridges framed by polished titanium pillars surrounding the mechanical organs. This construction is typical of 18th century marine chronometers. The architectural approach is picked up in the design of all the components, and especially in the symmetrical equilibrium of the movement.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The distinctive nature of the FB-T.FC.R calibre lies in its inverted upside-down barrel and fusee, and particularly in the fact that both elements are suspended, meaning held on only one side. A patent has been filed for this construction which saves precious millimetres. At 9.89 mm thick, the movement of the Chronomètre Ferdinand Berthoud FB 1R.6-1 thus remains extremely thin for its category despite the regulator-type display and the new power-reserve indication.

Keeping things moving

When the mainspring is combined with a fusee, the barrel drum turns in one direction when the spring is unwinding and in the other when it is winding, hence serving to coil the chain. The movement generally stops while this type of mechanism is being wound. To prevent this, the FB-T.FC.R calibre is equipped with a differential gear based on an original concept and for which patent has also been filed. It enables the balance wheel to continue oscillating during winding and thereby maintain the movement’s precision timekeeping properties.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The winding mechanism is fitted with a pinion featuring cone-shaped toothing. Coupled with a large-diameter knurled crown, it enables smooth movement winding. This gentle motion, which is essential in the case of manual winding, enhances the quality of the day-to-day rapport between the watch and its owner.

Force and safety features

As typically found on chain and fusee mechanisms, the barrel of Calibre FB-T.FC.R is equipped with a “Maltese Cross” stopwork device. The latter serves to limit the winding turns of the mainspring to around six, so as to use only the most stable portion of this spring. This device also acts as a buffer when the barrel is fully wound. At that point, the mainspring torque exerts a 3 kg force, which is considerable for the chain components measuring just a few millimetres.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

To perfect the security of the movement, the engineers at Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud have equipped the crown with a dynamometric function serving to avoid any damage to the movement that might be caused by excessive winding.

Tourbillon with central seconds

Teamed with the fourth (seconds) wheel and pinion, the tourbillon of Calibre FB-T.FC-R comprises 67 components assembled within a titanium carriage measuring 16.55 mm in diameter, and fixed to a perfectly hand-polished and chamfered arrow-shaped steel arch whose tip points towards the space between the barrel and the fusee. To poise the escapement’s unbalance, two 18-carat gold inertia-blocks ensure the uniform spread of the weights of this large-size tourbillon.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This tourbillon contributes to earning Calibre FB-T.FC.R its chronometer title awarded by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC). One particular characteristic makes the tourbillon extremely distinctive: although it performs one rotation per minute, it does not indicate the seconds, since the Chronomètre Ferdinand Berthoud FB 1R.6-1 is one of the rare tourbillons to have a central sweep-seconds hand. Extremely long, slim and made of gilded bronze, the latter moves with remarkable accuracy and in a remarkable stable manner.

Noble materials

Within the traditional approach to watchmaking, construction and mechanical structure are inseparable from the choice of materials and the quality of the finishing. In this respect, the movement of the Chronomètre Ferdinand Berthoud FB 1R.6-1 is in a league of its own. The bridges of Calibre FB-T.FC.R are made of untreated nickel silver: a copper, zinc and nickel alloy that is particularly shiny when polished, yet also extremely fragile. Any imperfection is irreparable. Nickel silver is also distinguished by its warm grey colour easily recognised by connoisseurs.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

It coexists here with steel, a new material in the array of metals used by Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud. This is an ultra-resistant carburised steel, based on a high-tech thermos-chemical surface treatment. It consists of diffusing carbon into a steel substrate, thereby increasing the hardness of the alloy without destroying its initial properties. In this instance, it reaches the record figure of 1200 Vickers, making the Chronomètre Ferdinand Berthoud FB 1R.6-1 exceptionally scratch-resistant. The choice of this type of steel, currently used in the aerospace industry, is a nod to the maritime expeditions achieved using the Marine Chronometers produced by Ferdinand Berthoud in the 18th century and which required the use of extremely sturdy materials.

Meticulous finishing

The stainless steel arrow-shaped tourbillon bridge is decorated with the utmost care. The upper side is specular-polished, the flanks are straight-grained, the angels are polished and the underside is circular-grained and smooth-polished. All levels of the titanium tourbillon bridge are entirely chamfered. Some surfaces are polished, others circular satin-brushed, sandblasted or smooth-polished. The lever bridge is completely chamfered and its visible side features a specular-polished finish while its hidden side is straight-grained. The power-reserve cone is mirror-polished.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The two bridges framing the tourbillon of the Chronomètre Ferdinand Berthoud FB 1R.6-1 feature cut-outs. Through one of these apertures, the baseplate has been engraved with the same pyramid pattern as the hours dial, while the other reveals the power-reserve cone in all its splendour.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO
The barrel and fusee are gilded, creating a pleasing contrast with the rough nickel silver and titanium which are omnipresent in the movement. The 790-part stainless steel chain measuring 285 mm long is also entirely hand-finished. The sides and studs are satin-brushed and the flat surfaces are polished.

Accurate workmanship

Whatever the position and function of the components, these finishing operations are entirely done by hand using traditional tools in the workshops of Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud. The quality control of this finishing is performed at a far higher degree of magnification than usual, with a 6x loupe. Under such intense scrutiny, no detail, however tiny, goes unnoticed.

No error, imperfection or insufficiency is tolerated. Such is the horological excellence cultivated by Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud as part of its unfailing commitment to precision for explorers. This respect for watchmaking tradition, expressed in resolutely modern terms through Ferdinand Berthoud chronometers, will remain at the core of future developments from the Maison.

The FB 1 "Night Star" model has a sandblasted anthracite-ceramised titanium case. This treatment renders titanium four times more resistant than traditional titanium, while giving it a distinctive appearance.

A play on colours is at the heart of the design of this one-of-a-kind model. It is the first ever designed by Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud to feature hands and numerals equipped with Super-LumiNova. This luminescent material, deliberately chosen in white, contrasts with the dark tones of the exterior, evoking the gleam of the stars in the night sky.

Historically, stars were navigators' reference points for their position on the oceans, thus recalling the ancestry of the FB 1 collection, designed in the wake of Ferdinand Berthoud's work on calculating longitude at sea.

Symbolically, white Super-LumiNova evokes the ray of hope that inspires the fight against Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

The black ceramic crown inlay matches the frosted black dial, a finish found on the Manufacture’s most recent models. On the case-back side, the Chronomètre FB 1 "Night Star" Chronometer features three bevelled sapphire semi-bridges, providing a chance to admire the entire black rhodium-plated movement with fusée-and-chain transmission and direct-drive seconds.

"We are very happy to support a major cause of scientific research that still affects so many children and adults," explains Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, Co-President of Chopard and President of Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud. "This enduring commitment has enabled us to develop bold unique pieces, stemming from lengthy aesthetic and technical research, reflecting powerful choices that our collectors did not necessarily expect. The Chronomètre FB 1 "Night Star" reflects the same perspective. It enables us to present an original aesthetic that is sophisticated and different from our more traditional models."

FERDINAND BERTHOUD – Chronometre FB 1L Edition

FERDINAND BERTHOUDChronomètre FB 1L "Near Side of the Moon"44mm Limited Edition

THE TWO FACES OF THE MOON

Imbued with the scientific spirit of the Enlightenment, Chronométrie Ferdinand Ber thoud unveils a new experimental collection, combining the in - house tourbillon movement with a new display of the age and phases of the moon: the Chronomètre FB 1L.

Available in two ten-piece limited editions – with a case in 18-carat white gold and black ceramic lugs, or in anthracite ceramised titanium & sandblasted 18 -carat white gold, this new collection displays the hours and minutes on a dedicated subdial at 12 o’clock, seconds in the centre and the 53-hour power reserve on the back of the movement. A large hand at 6 o’clock indicates the age and phases of the moon in a continuous back and forth movement. This patent-pending complication, combined with the constant force of the FB -T.FC.L calibre, ensures astronomical precision corresponding to a one-day difference in 577 years of operation.

Truly at the crossroads between astronomy and chronometry, the Chronomètre FB 1L pays tribute to Ferdinand Berthoud's work on chronometric precision and the calculation of longitude. It was to this end that the master watchmaker designed his famous Marine Chronometers, which inspired the creation of the FB 1L collection.

A BIT OF HISTORY

What exactly happened at 23 Quai Conti, in Pari s? This is the address of the French Académie Royale des Sciences , which became the Académie des Sciences in 1666 . It is here that during the 1750s Ferdinand Berthoud submitted several documents, the first forms of patents on his many inventions , under sealed cover.

At the same time, at the same location , the knight Jean - Charles de Borda also submitted his first works as an engineer, a few years later, embarking on various ships to clarify the calculation of longitude. For these missions, he use d measuring instruments created by Berthoud.

This collaboration between watchmakers, engineers and sailors forms the essence of Ferdinand Berthoud's period, the famous age of Enlightenment, which he lived through in its entirety. Its purpose was to disseminate and enhance knowledge. Ferdinand Berthoud actively contribute d to both missions, as well as writing a large number of ar ticles relating to horology for Diderot and d'Alembert ’s Encyclopaedia – the first systematic attempt to provide an exhaustive summar y of human knowledge – as well as authoring 11 watchmaking treatises in 30 years.

Berthoud indeed dedicated his entire life as a researcher and watchmaker to the enhancement of knowledge . His countless works on chronometric accuracy and longitude calculation were regarded as authoritative for decades. A master watchmaker at only 26 years of age, he devote d a large par t of his work to marine chronometers, essential instruments for accurate measurements related to the calculation of longitude .

As early as 1752,  the  accuracy of these readings was greatly improved thanks to an instrument optimized by the same Jean - Charles de Borda, af ter whom it was named the Borda circle (also known as a repeating circle) . This instrument was designed to measure angular distances by r epeating the same observation several times on the circle without returning to zero. Its par ticularity: the more the measurements it per forms are repeated, the smaller its margin of error. The Borda circle was the essential link that made it possible to pa ss from the octant (with an accuracy of 150 nautical miles, or more than 270 km) to the sextant (accurate to 0.2 miles, or 370 metres).

The Borda circle was conceived as an improvement of the reflecting circle invented in 1752 by Tobias Mayer, a German astronomer known for his lunar tables, which made it possible to determine the position of the Moon and hence longitude in a precise manner.

The Chronomètre Ferdinand Berthoud FB 1L is a tribute to these pioneers who combined their knowledge to ach ieve a level of chronometric and astronomical precision that would change the course of history

A NEW DISPLAY

The FB 1L Chronometer is a model displaying the age and phases of the moon. Combining chronometric precision and astronomical measurement , it associates these two previously dissociated values which jointly made it possible – almost three centuries ago – to achieve more accurate longitude calculations, a quest at the heart of a large number of Ferdinand Berthoud's works.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The age and phases of the moon are two separate measurements.

The moon phase is the most common in watchmaking. This is the complication that visually indicates the dif ferent lunar cycles. The moon phase is divided into four phases: new moon, first quar ter, full moon and last quarter. A lunation or lunar cycle is the time interval between two new moons. A symbolic and aesthetic complication, the moon phase does not, however, of fer the accuracy necessar y for astronomical use.

The age of the moon is a more accurate indicator which counts the number of days since the last new moon. This veritable scientific measuring instrument, coupled with the chronometric measurement of time, made it possible to determine longitude at sea with unparalleled accuracy nearly 270 years ago.

For the first time, the FB 1L collection combines these two instruments: a chronometer and an indicator of the age and phases of the moon within the same model.

CONSTANT FORCE

The 100% in - house calibre of the Chronomètre FB 1L features an original suspended fusee - and - chain construction. It delivers a constant force to the escapement throughout the operation of movement, from its first turn of the crown to complete winding, thus achieving a 53- hour power reserve.

TOURBILLON WITH DIRECT-DRIVE SECONDS

The movement also features a tourbillon with direct - drive seconds , compensating for the variations in rate induced by the dif ferent positions the watch adopts throughout the day. Direct - drive seconds are made possible by the correlation between the seconds wheel and the wheel driving the tourbillon carriage.

AGE OF THE MOON AND PROGRESSION
OF THE LUNAR CYCLE

Finally, for the first time, Calibre FB -T. FC. L is complemented by a patented complication: the age of the moon . This consists of two indications. The first is the display of the moon's age in days, marked from 1 to 14 on a sector swept over by a hand moving back and forth.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Day "1" is the first day since the new moon. Facing this "1" is a circle symbolising the latter. The next three quar ters are spread over the same sector as the days go by. Facing the 14 th day is a solid disc, symbolising the full moon. At this point, the hand per forms a gradual backward move passing through the same quar ters in the opposite direction: three quar ters, two quar ters, one quar ter, until the return to the new moon.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This display of the age of the moon is complemented by another function revealed through a dial opening between 4 and 5 o’clock, showing the current moon phase, waxing or waning, thereby indicating whether the moon - age indicator h and is rising (up to day 14) or ret urning (to the new moon ). Since this hand progresses at a rate imperceptible to the naked eye, this precious moon - phase indication makes it possible at a single glance to see whether one is heading towards a full moon or a new moon.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This age-of- the -moon display is provided by an arrow surrounding a half - sphere accurately depicting the two large faces of the Moon – visible and hidden – on both versions of the FB 1L collection.

This original mechanism is inspired by a syst em for displaying the equation of time developed by Ferdinand Berthoud in 1752 . It was based on the use of a feeler- spindle arm that followed an equation of time cam. In this instance, however, it is an age-of-the-moon cam.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This invention earned him the title of master watchmaker a year later, by decree of the King's Council. This contemporar y interpretation serves to provide a disc - free display of the age of the moon by means of a hand moving back and for th with an accuracy of 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minute s and 15 seconds – corresponding to a mere one - day dif ference in 577 years of continuous operation. This exceptional result is made possible thanks to the large number of teeth o n the moving disc revealed between 4 and 5 o’clock . The Chronomètre FB 1L thus achieves a degree of accuracy in displaying the age of the moon that exceeds conventional moon phase displays, most of which remain accurate over a period of “ only ” 122 years.

The accuracy of each movement in this collection is attested by a chronometr y certificate issued by the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC).

The unique features of the Ferdinand Berthoud movement are the subject of four patents, now supplemented by two other patent applications for the age-of-the-moon mechanism specific to the FB 1L models.
CASE

The distinctively shaped case is based on the architecture of the marine chronometers designed by Ferdinand Berthoud from 1760 onwards, inspired by his Marine Clocks, and their gimbal suspension in par ticular, which allowed th e on - board chronometers to remain permanently in a horizontal position.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

For the FB 1L collection, the case was completed for the first time with a selector switch placed between 4 and 5 o’clock which enables the wearer to choose between two positions, L a nd H, to set the age of the moon or the time.

VERSIONS

Two versions of the Chronomètre FB 1L are available.

The FB 1L.1 "Near Side of the Moon" model favours a warm and luminous approach reminiscent of the visible face of the Moon and the intensity of t he full moon. The piece has a case middle, side elements and crown in 18-carat polished white gold. Its lugs are made of black ceramic.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The FB 1L.4 "Far Side of the Moon" version evokes the dark and mysterious tones of the Moon's hidden face . This time, its white gold case middle is sandblasted and, in place of ceramic, the lugs and side elements are made of dark grey ceramised titanium.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

On average four times harder than standard titanium, ceramised titanium is par t of the sustainability approach adopted in the making of Ferdinand Berthoud creations, which ha s already led the Manufacture to develop a carburised steel with similar properties.

Each piece will be issued as a numbered ten - piece limited edition.
