This new divers’ watch is executed in an eye-catching combination of blue, red and white hues. Optimally designed for underwater use, this model invites wearers to immerse themselves in a world of extremes; Pipin’s world.

Founded in Havana in 1882, the history of Cuervo y Sobrinos is interwoven with that of Cuba. Today, the company’s watches are crafted adjacent the shores of Lake Lugano in Switzerland, but the brand’s ties with the Caribbean island remain undiminished. Indeed, the company continues to have a boutique in Havana and often finds inspiration in various aspects of Cuban life as well as its extensive archives.

In 2021, Cuervo y Sobrinos announced a partnership with Cuban freediving legend and multiple world record holder, Francisco ‘Pipin’ Ferreras. Born in Matanzas, Cuba, Pipin acquired a passion for spearfishing at a young age, diving ever deeper and submerging for longer with each passing year. Sometimes described as a ‘human fish’, Pipin is probably best known for ‘No-Limits’ freediving, the discipline where he first came to prominence.

He established the first world record for ‘No-Limits’ freediving back in November 1989, descending to a depth of 112 metres. An esoteric sport, it’s worth pausing for a moment and imagining life in this subaquatic world, an underwater universe that Pipin knows well.

Having taken just one breath, Pipin holds his heavy sled and descends underwater. No bottled air, just one breath. Deeper and deeper, his body becomes increasingly compressed. His capacious lungs are almost crushed as the water clenches his body, squeezing it with ever-increasing pressure. The available light diminishes and Pipin enters a new territory, his heart slows to 14 beats per minute and yet somehow he finds an inner peace as he enters another world.

After several minutes have elapsed since taking that one breath, he activates his lift bag and ascends to the surface. For most people it appears an unworldly domain that few can comprehend, but this is a world that’s been familiar to Pipin for most of his life.

Shortly after announcing the partnership with Pipin, Cuervo y Sobrinos began working on a new divers’ watch. The company worked closely with the freediver, drawing on his vast experience of operating deep underwater.

Eventually, the Cuban-Swiss marque unveiled the Buceador Caribe. In recognition of Pipin’s many achievements, Cuervo y Sobrinos is pleased to unveil a new limited edition model in his honour, the aptly named Buceador Caribe Pipin.

Optimally designed to be legible whether underwater or on terra firma, the Buceador Caribe Pipin features a pure white dial incorporating blue and red accents, a respectful nod to the Cuban flag. The model is endowed with fulsome hour and minute hands, aiding readability.

The white indices are outlined in blue while the minute hand, the most critical indication underwater, is accentuated with an ebullient red edge. Both the hands and indices are lined with Super-LumiNova®. A blue centre seconds hand is fitted with a lollipop outlined in red. At the base of the dial, an aperture reveals the prevailing date.

Housed in a highly complex, 43mm steel case, featuring a container-type construction, this divers’ watch is water resistant to 200m. An ingenious pusher system, positioned at 4 o’clock, unlocks the crown at 2 o’clock.

The crown, once again executed in red, is used to adjust the internal rotating bezel, allowing the wearer to monitor their dive time. A further crown, located at 9 o' clock, is used to adjust the indications as well as tension the mainspring.

Upholding divers' watch convention, the Buceador Caribe Pipin is fitted with a solid case back. In this instance, it is engraved with a depiction of a diver swimming underwater, surrounded by a shoal of tropical fish.

At the heart of this watch sits the CYS 8126 automatic calibre, a Swiss movement that features a finished oscillating weight with an engraved motif.

The Buceador Caribe Pipin is presented on a white high-gloss rubber strap and is also supplied with a blue leather strap. The watch affixes to the wrist with a steel pin buckle engraved with the CyS emblem.

The Buceador Caribe Pipin is limited to 171 pieces, a reference to the last World Record Pipin set in the No-Limits discipline of 171 metres (560 feet) back in November 2003. This limited-edition timepiece celebrates a remarkable individual and a much loved son of Cuba.

The inaugural Cuban Grand Prix, the Gran Premio de Cuba was held in 1957. In this race, the famous Argentinean driver Juan Manuel Fangio secured victory in his Maserati 300S

The following year, on the eve of the race, antigovernmental revolutionaries kidnapped Fangio, however, the race still went ahead and Stirling Moss was victorious in his Ferrari 335S.

Unfortunately, the 1959 race was cancelled due to political instability, however, it returned for one last time in 1960, when the British driver, Stirling Moss, was once again, triumphant, albeit this time in a Maserati Tipo 61.

CUERVO Y SOBRINOS – PIRATA Tourbillon Edition

CUERVO Y SOBRINOSPIRATA Tourbillon 45mm Limited Edition

Recently, Cuervo y Sobrinos held an event in Bratislava. Guests were indulged with a Cuban-themed evening and also had the opportunity to view the company’s products at close quarters.

However, the climax of the evening was the unveiling of the new Pirata Tourbillon, a limited edition model featuring a ‘high complication’. Cuervo y Sobrinos recently held an event in Bratislava where guests were invited to discover the company’s collection of watches.

The highlight of the evening was when Massimo Rossi, the CEO of Cuervo y Sobrinos, opened a vintage-themed safe and removed the new Pirata Tourbillon, a watch equipped with a much-coveted complication. This timepiece is limited to 10 pieces, hence exclusivity is assured.

The tourbillon, patented in 1801, mitigates the adverse influence of gravity on the watch’s movement. The mechanism involves placing the escapement and the regulating organ within a rotating cage. As the cage rotates, any positional influences acting on the movement are negated, thereby augmenting precision. Such is the complexity of a tourbillon that it is often termed a ‘high complication’.

The assembly of the movement and its subsequent regulation requires the expertise of a Master watchmaker. The Pirata Tourbillon is housed in a bronze and titanium case measuring 45mm in diameter. The bronze components will acquire a patinated appearance with the onset of age. Moreover, by blending said metals, the case looks understated, providing the perfect foil for the dial to shine.

The dial celebrates Cuba’s rich maritime history with its distinctive ship’s wheel design. Openworked hour and minute hands impart meaning, while at the same time affording better views of the movement.

The dial area is encircled by a grey-hued maritime rope. A track is positioned on the flange and uses silver-toned spherical markings to denote the minutes. Thermally blued screws adorn the tourbillon bridge and cage, upholding fine watchmaking practise.

The Maison’s emblem is positioned at the top of the dial, a sign of excellence familiar to legions of clients. At the heart of the Pirata Tourbillon is the calibre CYS 6000, a hand-wound movement with a prodigious power reserve of 105 hours.

Unlike most movements which feature an index regulator, this movement is equipped with a variable-inertia balance, a feature that provides superior rate stability and, once again, makes the watch less prone to positional errors.

The sumptuous feel of the watch also extends to its black alligator strap which is paired with a titanium pin buckle, adorned with an engraved CyS emblem. The Pirata Tourbillon is the ultimate expression of Cuervo y Sobrinos ownership. It is rich in horological virtue, encompassing precision and refined finishing, all endowed with notable Latin style. Cuervo y Sobrinos: Swiss manufacture, Latin heritage.

CUERVO Y SOBRINOS – Torpedo Pirata Chrono Day Date Edition

CUERVO Y SOBRINOSTORPEDO Pirata Chrono Day Date Limited Edition

The Cuervo y Sobrinos brand couldn’t miss the chance to draw a parallel among the historical past of its place of origin. Secret beaches, buried treasures: Caribbean islands such as Cuba, Tortuga and Santo Domingo were once a favourite hunting ground for famous pirates.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Mirroring this spirit of freedom, daring and adventure, Cuervo y Sobrinos pays a tribute to its origin creating watches with a strong identity inspired by the adventurous and romantic spirit of the buccaneers. This is why within the bezel the sentence "Pirata de el Tiempo de la vida" is engraved.

The Torpedo Pirata watch is a wealth of details.

All the parts are clearly reminiscent of the brazenness of the great pirates: the case is in the shape of a cannon mouth while the lugs represent the bow of a ship plundering on the Caribbean Sea. The crown subtle design in the shape of the globe and the buckle recaptures the design of the lugs.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

An important feature of this masterpiece is the modular case composed of rings uniquely tailored allowing to combine the various metals which create a watch with ongoing evolution. In fact, the stainless-steel material used in the current model, is the innovation compared to its predecessors made in bronze, the material preferred at the time of the great buccaneers of the 17th century.

The Torpedo Pirata Chrono Day Date houses an automatic movement, the black velvet effect of the chronograph’s dial combines a perfect balance of two counters: 12-hour scale and 30-minute counter. In addition to a central seconds’ counter, hours and minutes and also an independent second’s counter at 9 o’clock with printed Cuervo y Sobrinos blazon and day date window at 3 o'clock.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The sapphire crystal case-back on each model reveals the details of the automatic movement. Engraved on the crystal case-back a unique logo for this model, two “swords” surround the classic CyS logo, paying a tribute to the pirate world in which the watch was inspired.
