Slim and textured

The ultrathin tourbillon by Arnold & Son is offering two new designs. They feature a new type of dial with tinted gold and aluminium sparkles to match their precious cases, which have also been redesigned.

In 5N red gold or 950 platinum, the cases are just 8.3 mm thick beneath their domed sapphire crystals.

The offset display and the tourbillon aperture echo the way in which information was arranged on John Arnold’s marine chronometers.

After reworking the structure and appearance of the rotating regulating organ, the power reserve now lasts at least 100 hours – an outstanding and noteworthy performance for an ultrathin tourbillon timepiece.

To give the Ultrathin Tourbillon a new unique and refined design, Arnold & Son has focused on materials and techniques that highlight the precious appearance of this finely honed tourbillon.

The 41.5 mm cases in 5N red gold or 950 platinum have been redesigned, making them even slimmer and more refined.

The bezels have been reduced to a fine metal band, the sapphire crystals are domed, and the transparent case backs have been screwed down.

Beneath the stars

Arnold & Son has used a new manufacturing technique known as ‘Cosmic Grené’ on the dials. This name makes direct reference to stargazing, as stars are essential guides for navigating at sea along with marine chronometers (of which John Arnold was one of the largest and most reputable suppliers).

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Gold powder mixed with aluminium sparkles has been placed on the dial plate to create a lightly sandblasted surface. This is then coloured: blue for the Ultrathin Tourbillon in red gold, and green for the platinum version.

Due to the complex manufacturing methods involved, these dials are subtle and finely textured, with a discreet lustre.

Latest-generation carriage

At the heart of the Ultrathin Tourbillon lies the A&S8300 calibre, whose architecture and finesse characterise this collection. At just 2.97 mm thick, this tourbillon with extremely refined finishes is one of the slimmest ever designed.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The highest point of the A&S8300 calibre is located on the top of the tourbillon carriage, which has also been redesigned and undergone significant changes in relation to its predecessors. It features a variable-inertia balance with inertia blocks to ensure more stable calibration over time.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The redesigned tourbillon carriage echoes the leading role John Arnold played in marine exploration during the 18th century. Its triangular shape evokes a sextant, while its double-arrow counterpoise represents an anchor.

The point in the middle serves as a seconds marker, as the carriage completes a full rotation in one minute.

Golden time

The back of the Ultrathin Tourbillon reveals a new rear tourbillon bridge in 3N yellow gold that matches the gear train and stands out from the appearance of the rest of the calibre.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTOModifications to the tourbillon carriage and regulating organ have increased the power reserve of the A&S8300 calibre, which now lasts at least 100 hours.

This long power reserve meets the performance standards of Arnold & Son calibres.

ARNOLD & SON – PERPETUAL MOON 38 Eclipse I Edition

ARNOLD & SONPERPETUAL MOON 38 Eclipse I Edition 2022

 A MOON IN CHIAROSCURO

With its 38 mm white-gold case, gem-setting and aesthetics, the Perpetual Moon 38 Eclipse I ushers in a new chapter for women at Arnold & Son. Under a large precision moon, and featuring a new movement adapted to its dimensions, this watch oozes refinement and delicacy. Each of the eighteen timepieces released has been forged like a sculpture of time.

Arnold & Son is offering its first watch designed, created, embellished and powered for women. A new 38 mm case houses a calibre designed for this moon-phase complication. It extends into a blue alligator-leather strap with a satin finish and fuchsia lining.

OPULENCE

The 38 mm diameter case is 10.44 mm thick and crafted from white gold. Its bezel, four horns and crown host a total of 90 brilliant-cut diamonds. This sumptuous setting announces the ornamental richness with which Arnold & Son has graced the dial of this large-moon timepiece.

LACE

The dial of the Perpetual Moon 38 Eclipse I is composed of a fine layer of blue aventurine crystal, featuring lace-like cut-outs through which the large moon disc can be glimpsed.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTOThe starry sky is made of mother-of-pearl in a graduation of shades from blue to white. The two lunar discs are depicted by ruthenium crystals. Between them, the constellations have been painted by hand.

INTERLACING

At 8 o’clock, the main motif of the Arnold & Son Perpetual Moon 38 Eclipse I scintillates with precious stones. The cut-outs adorning the lace-like aventurine backdrop have been encrusted with white and blue mother-of-pearl fragments, diamonds, and blue and pink sapphires, all cut to form a large star complete with glistening halo. By playing with transparency, colour and mineral composition, the Perpetual Moon 38 Eclipse I showcases the know-how of Arnold & Son as it adopts new, particularly expressive techniques.

 HIGH STANDARDS

The Perpetual Moon 38 Eclipse I transposes the high watchmaking standards that have always guided the brand into the world of ladies’ timepieces. As a result, the Swiss Arnold & Son Manufacture has created an entirely new calibre, which is also the smallest in its collection.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

At 30 mm, the A&S1612 calibre was designed to fit the new 38 mm diameter case that is just 10.44 mm thick. This manually wound movement with an autonomy of 90 hours thus perpetuates the range of Arnold & Son calibres with impressive power reserves.

LOYALTY

The emblematic complication of the A&S1612 calibre is its moon-phase indicator. Drawing on its ingenious large-moon principle, Arnold & Son has naturally incorporated a majestic lunar disc into its Perpetual Moon 38 Eclipse I timepiece. Its various crescents fill the large aperture located between 10 and 2 o’clock.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTOFaithful to its precision watchmaking tradition and the history that linked John Arnold to navigating the high seas, Arnold & Son has endowed this moon with an accuracy of 122 years. Thus when kept constantly wound, it would take more than a century for the moon on the timepiece to experience a time lag with its real-life counterpart in the sky.

ARNOLD & SON – PERPETUAL MOON “Year of the Tiger” Edition

ARNOLD & SONMÉTIERS D'ARTS PERPETUAL MOON “Year of the Tiger” Gold 42mm Edition 2022

The year of the Water Tiger is embodied in an expressive version of the Perpetual Moon. Arnold & Son has fashioned a golden tiger, roaring and on the alert. In the background, a waterfall symbolises the element that tempers this feline’s ferocious energy. The refinement of this decorative dial springs from consummate craftsmanship and the wide range of precious gemstones that Arnold & Son draws on. Rose gold and specular hematite, mother-of-pearl and aventurine interpret a highly symbolic scene on the watch. To celebrate the start of the new year in the traditional Chinese astrological calendar, Arnold & Son is releasing a limited edition comprising eight pieces of its high-precision phases of the moon model. The “Year of the Tiger” Perpetual Moon features a sculpted golden tiger against a backdrop in specular hematite, a rare and expressive stone.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Year of the Tiger starts on Tuesday 1 February 2022. It is particularly auspicious. The tiger’s courage and power are tempered by the element of water. The year is set fair to be full of enthusiasm, surprises and dynamism. The animal featured on the dial of the “Year of the Tiger” Perpetual Moon is therefore standing on a riverbank, ready to welcome in a new world.

IMMENSE

On the canvas offered by the dial of this exceptional piece, Arnold & Son has accommodated a large moon. In a wide window a turning disc reveals the waxing and waning of the celestial body, the appearance of the crescent moon and its light. For this moon is crafted from mother-of-pearl enhanced with Super-LumiNova, and its relief is painted. In daylight it is grey, almost white.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In the dark it lights up from the interior and takes on a new aspect, brimming with gleaming detail. This is complemented by all the aquatic details on the dial, also hand-painted with luminous pigments. In the background, the disc bearing the star is made from a deep black aventurine glass.

EXPRESSIVE

The centrepiece of this dial is, however, the tiger itself. Sculptured in three dimensions, it is crafted from 18-carat rose gold. Its expression, its pose and the details of its fur are hand-engraved and -burnished.  This meticulous, high-calibre work is a testimony to Arnold & Son’s exceptional attention to detail in their limited editions paying tribute to the Chinese zodiac.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The same holds true for the dial. A decoration depicting bamboo is painted in gold powder on the hematite disc with glittering inclusions. To round off this dazzling scene, the “Year of the Tiger” Perpetual Moon is mounted on a glistening black alligator strap backed with red alligator leather and stitched with platinum thread.

PRECISE

Like all the movements used by Arnold & Son, the calibre A&S1512 was entirely developed, produced, assembled, decorated, adjusted and cased up in the brand’s Manufacture in La Chaux-de-Fonds. This calibre is based on a large barrel with an oscillation frequency of 3 Hz, giving a 90-hour power reserve.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Last but not least, the moon-phase display of this movement will remain accurate for 122 years before deviating from the actual lunar cycle by one day. The “Year of the Tiger” Perpetual Moon is thus part of an astronomical, astrological cycle; a perspective of eternity.

ARNOLD & SON – Double Tourbillon JADE Edition

ARNOLD & SONGRAND COMPLICATIONS Double Tourbillon JADE Gold Unique Pieces 2021

Arnold & Son is celebrating its Double Tourbillon collection with the unveiling of two unique pieces adorned with dazzling green jade and delicate white opal – Arnold & Son Double Tourbillon Jade. The two independent tourbillons and two time zones of this rare model have taken on a new face. The result of high-calibre watchmaking execution, these models are available in either red gold or white gold.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Arnold & Son continues to make advances in the field of exceptional, unique pieces. The Double Tourbillon Jade is also in keeping with collections by the Maison which are adorned with dials featuring expressive, rare stones.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Arnold & Son
’s watchmaking has now climbed up a notch in singularity and symbolic strength, producing two unique versions of its Double Tourbillon model with a green jade dial punctuated by two opal sub-dials in immaculate white. The A&S8513 calibre allows its two independent tourbillons to emerge into view above these rare stones. United by a shared main plate, each displays a different time zone.

A mineral beauty

Arnold & Son had their sights set on jade from Wyoming. This bright green nephrite known as “Apple Green” is slightly veined with black. This brings greater depth, contrast and makes the stone all the more precious. Jade itself is a stone rich in symbolic meaning. A mineral linked to sacred beliefs, traditional medicine and protective rituals of several Asian and Central American civilisations; its cultural significance makes it like no other stone in the world.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The dial plate of the Double Tourbillon Jade has been expertly cut in a very particular way. In the shape of a clover, the main plate allows both dials and tourbillons to emerge to their full height. This complicates the stone cutting and engraving stages, which further underlines the mastery of the work.

Watchmaking excellence

Arnold & Son’s second major area of expertise is demonstrated by the calibre. The Double Tourbillon Jade movement is integrated into a red gold or white gold case with a diameter of 43.5 mm. Its sapphire crystal is domed, accommodating the height created by the two tourbillons.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

These are attached to a three-dimensional, skeletonized, cantilevered bridge, and are made in the same gold as the case. They are the culmination of the design, manufacture, finish and adjusting capabilities of Arnold & Son.

Duality

Paying homage to its founder, John Arnold, one of the most inventive watchmakers of his time and of the golden age of chronometry, Arnold & Son has always approached the double time zone with sophistication and precision.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Instead of the classic “GMT” system, where an hour hand in the centre indicates the second time zone, Arnold & Son has chosen to give each time zone its own regulating organ: a reminder of the duality of time telling methods – timepieces on one hand, astronomy on the other – used on board English frigates in the 18th century.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The A&S8513 calibre is therefore equipped with two barrels and two crowns that control the two time zones. At midday, the local time is visible in Roman numerals. At six o’clock, Arabic numerals indicate the time of a second, more distant place that has a connection to the wearer. The two time zones are set completely independently down to the minute.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Unlike most so-called travel watches, the Double Tourbillon Jade can therefore follow time zones offset by 15, 30 or 45 minutes, as is the case with certain countries in Central Asia.

Refined finishes

The structure of the movement can be seen on the back of the Double Tourbillon Jade. The extremely successful finishes, a specialism in Arnold & Son watchmaking, are taken to the highest level.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

From the radiant Côtes de Genève to the circular-graining on the main plate, double snailing of the barrels, sunray decoration on the crown wheels, and polish on the gold bezels held in place by blued screws, everything about the A&S8513 calibre exudes eminence, craftsmanship and excellence.

ARNOLD & SON – LUNA MAGNA Platinum 44 Edition

ARNOLD & SONLUNA MAGNA Platinum 44mm Limited Edition 2021

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Luna Magna PLATINUM

MOONLIGHT CHIAROSCURO

Against the grandeur of an aventurine crystal sky, the Luna Magna Platinum is revealed through its select materials. The large three-dimensional moon is composed of blue aventurine and grey marble, while the time is read on a mother-of-pearl dial. The 950 platinum case completes the piece, showcasing a changing play of light that enlivens the dial and lunar sphere.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The moon waxes, wanes, disappears, and once again returns to light up the sky. Luna Magna, the largest and most spectacular of all moons in watchmaking, begins a new cycle within its fully polished 950 platinum case with white mother-of-pearl hour and minute sub-dial in a satin-brushed ring, and ever-changing reflections.

CHANGES IN THE LIGHT

Centred on the moon theme so dear to Arnold & Son, Luna Magna Platinum is a limited series of only twenty-eight pieces. The smooth, understated shine and weight of the platinum give the piece a certain majesty. Set in aventurine crystal, the metallic crystals bring the dial to life with their brilliance.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Half of the 12 mm three-dimensional moon is made of grey marble and the other half of aventurine crystal, reflecting the moon’s dual nature. Guided by an exclusive moon-phase complication, this chiaroscuro, this movement of the light, make the Luna Magna Platinum a living, ever-changing, fleeting yet everlasting timepiece.

MOTHER-OF-PEARL DISPLAY

The hours and minutes are displayed on the graduated dial with twelve Roman numerals bearing the Arnold & Son signature.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This eccentric disc owes its luminosity to the slightly iridescent white mother-of-pearl, imparting a delicate quality that matches the elegant complication of the Luna Magna Platinum.

SWISS MADE

Luna Magna Platinum is based on the A&S1021 calibre, which has been fully developed and then assembled and adjusted in Switzerland.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Designed around the lunar globe, the movement is hand-wound and features a 90-hour power reserve and regulating mechanism set at 3 Hz. On the back is a secondary display, with clearly legible lunations for fine adjustments.

PRECISION

The celestial mechanism also owes its sophisticated design to the fidelity in its astronomical accuracy. The duration of a complete lunar cycle is 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes and 2.8 seconds.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Arnold & Son have succeeded in approximating this cycle such that, if the watch was never stopped, it would take 122 years for the moon-phase display to accumulate a day’s discrepancy from the correct phase.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

And the correction is easy, since Luna Magna Platinum’s lunar function is accessible directly from the crown. A practical solution made possible by Arnold & Son’s total mastery of the watchmaking process.
