ARNOLD & SON – MÉTIERS D'ARTS Perpetual Moon “Year of the Ox” Edition

ARNOLD & SONMÉTIERS D'ARTS Perpetual Moon “Year of the Ox” Gold 42mm Limited Edition 2021

A GOLDEN YEAR

The year of the Metal Buffalo has been the inspiration behind a scintillating production of the Perpetual Moon. Arnold & Son dreamed up a powerful animal, an immense moon, refined production drawing on the Manufacture’s know-how, and the variety of motifs offered by the mineral kingdom. Yellow gold and specular haematite dominate by day, and at night the scene lights up.

In honour of the traditional Chinese zodiacal calendar’s new year, Arnold & Son has produced an eight-piece limited series of its high-precision moon-phases model decorated with a buffalo.

The year of the Metal Buffalo begins on 12 February 2021 and symbolises appeasement, dialogue and soil fertility. It is thus a powerful and docile animal that is represented on the dial of the Perpetual Moon “Year of the Ox”.

Immensity

Arnold & Son have installed their large moon in the night-sky that forms the dial of this exceptional time-piece. In a large aperture, a disc turns to show us the age of the heavenly body, the appearance of its crescent and its light. This moon is crafted in mother-of-pearl, its shadows are hand-painted and it is coated with Super-LumiNova.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In the daylight, it is almost white. In the dark, it lights up from within and takes on a new aspect, with details emerging. Further along on this disc, the constellation has been created using the same methods.

Rarity

Arnold & Son continue to make the most of the infinitely varying textures nature has to offer.

After obsidian and aventurine quartz, it is specular haematite that has been selected for making the dial of this Perpetual Moon. This variety of haematite is in laminated form, with layers that are naturally smooth and shiny.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

As with all haematites, due to its iron composition there are silvery flakes in its totally black mass. These glittering specks have also been incorporated into the double-faced alligator-skin strap, the outer face of which is black, flake-speckled and embellished with stitching in veritable platinum (Pt950) thread.

Horns

But the unique and exclusive signature of this limited series is the buffalo with immense horns standing, imposingly, at 6 o’clock. It is a miniature gold sculpture featuring the animal in a majestic posture. In the background is a scenery of multi-storey pagodas, hand-painted with gold powder.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Their windows have also been painted with Super-LumiNova. Thus at night-time, these temples are lit up from the interior and the Arnold & Son Perpetual Moon takes on an inhabited aspect.

Accuracy

Like all the movements used by Arnold & Son, the calibre A&S1512 was entirely developed, produced, assembled, decorated, adjusted and cased up in the brand’s Manufacture in La Chaux-de-Fonds. This calibre is based on a large barrel with an oscillation frequency of 3 Hz, giving a 90-hour power reserve.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Last but not least, the moon-phase display of this movement will remain accurate for 122 years before deviating by one day from the actual appearance of the moon in the night-sky.

ARNOLD & SON – GLOBETROTTER DAY World-Time Edition

ARNOLD & SONGLOBETROTTER DAY World-Time Chronometers Steel 45 mm Limited Edition

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO
GLOBETROTTER DAY World-Time

Between the 18th and 19th century, Arnold & Son made a name for itself by creating some of the most precise marine chronometers of the epoch, which were used not just to tell the time, but as navigational instruments to determine longitude and sail safely from one location to another. Arnold & Son chronometers have taken part in extraordinary voyages, including James Cook voyages to the Pacific Ocean, as well as Sir John Franklin's ill-fated third and final expedition to the icy waters north of Canada in 1845.

Times have certainly changed since the days of using chronometers to determine longitude, as have the needs of the modern traveler. Arnold & Son has created a timepiece for the modern-day navigator, always on the move from one time zone to the next: The Globetrotter.

Part of the Arnold & Son Instrument Collection, which is inspired by the high-precision marine chronometers made by John Arnold and his son towards the end of the 18th century, the Globetrotter reimagined the world-time function in a three-dimensional way.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO
Held by a large central arched bridge spanning the entire diameter of the dial, the Globetrotter's three-dimensional world-time display takes centre stage.  At 45 mm wide and 17.23 mm at its highest point, the Globetrotter features one of the world's largest rotating 3D world-time display on a wristwatch.

Panoramic vision

Beneath a large sapphire crystal dome, an arch supports a half-globe in shades of grey and blue. It depicts the continents, the seas and the lights of the large cities located north of the equator. On the edge of the planet, a sapphire ring breaks down the 24 hours of a day.

Transparent between 6 am and 6 pm, a metal treatment has been used to darken it, indicating the night-time hours. Together, the hemisphere and ring display the time in one part of the world, represented in a highly original way. In the absence of a dedicated hand or city disc, the time is read geographically in accordance with the continents.

In the absence of a dedicated hand or city disc, the time is read geographically in accordance with the continents.

Intuitive to read and adjust, the Globetrotter features a three-position crown system. The first position is used to manually wind the movement, the second position sets the local time (hour hand) in one-hour increments, and the final position is used to set the hour and minute hands and the world-time. Both the main time display as well as the world-time function can be adjusted forwards and backwards.

The Earth by night and day

The Globetrotter Day offers a realistic and meticulously rendered interpretation of a three-dimensional map enclosed in a 45 mm steel case. Chemical engraving has been used on the half-globe to outline the continents. The raised parts have undergone a deep-grey galvanic treatment before being hand-lacquered in a black-grey hue, while the oceans are lacquered in grey-blue. Finally, the city lights twinkling in the northern hemisphere are represented by hand-applied silver sparkles.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO
Starting with a rounded piece of brass, the different textures of the oceans and continents are brought out by chemical etching with a mask, followed by polishing the upper surfaces. The mountainous areas are then sandblasted to create a sense of visual depth, then the oceans are lacquered by hand with different blue tones. The entire world-time disk is then treated with a layer of clear lacquer, and finally the entire component is polished. The result is a hemispherical disk full of lifelike details.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The decorative touches and finishes adorning the Globetrotter Day extend beyond the Earth itself. The chapter ring is circular satin-brushed and the hands, despite being mostly concealed beneath the half-globe, are polished and accentuated by red lacquered tips. The large double-foot bridge supporting the half-globe is a spectacular feature in itself that lends structure to the overall appearance of this timepiece. It is circular satin-brushed and chamfered by hand and held in place by screws with polished heads and chamfered slots.

Watchmaking ergonomics

These finishes are echoed extensively on the A&S6022 self-winding calibre powering the Globetrotter Night and Globetrotter Day. Entirely developed and produced by the Arnold & Son Manufacture, it has a nocturnal style thanks to the widespread use of NAC-type surface treatments.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The bridges are polished and chamfered, finished with Côtes de Genève stripes and coloured grey. The skeletonised oscillating weight is engraved and treated chemically with ADLC black and NAC grey to obtain a two-tone appearance using a matt straight-grained finish. When fully wound, the movement provides a power reserve of 45 hours.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Beyond these aesthetic details, what makes the A&S6022 calibre special is its easy setting, thanks to a three-position crown. The first winds the movement. The second adjusts the local time hand by one-hour jumps either clockwise or anti-clockwise. The third regulates the hours and minutes in addition to the planet’s rotation. When travelling to a different time zone, the second position enables the wearer to change local time while keeping world time synchronised.

With the Globetrotter, Arnold & Son masterfully demonstrates its unique aesthetic sense and manufacturing prowess, combining ingenious haute horlogerie with artisanal crafts to produce a world-time watch that is truly unlike any other.

In the interests of fairness, Arnold & Son can also provide a “southern hemisphere” version of its Globetrotter Night on request at the same price.

ARNOLD & SON – Perpetual Moon Obsidian Gold Edition

ARNOLD & SONPerpetual Moon Obsidian Gold 42mm Limited Edition 2020

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

With its XXL moon, the Perpetual Moon is ruled by Selene, the goddess of this celestial body. Arnold & Son presents a limited edition of 28 pieces featuring this distinctive complication, adorned with an extraordinary material rarely seen in watchmaking.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

With a dial made from Mexican obsidian, this timepiece appears to be bathed in bronze moonlight. The stone is reflected in the large rhodium-plated moon and the perfectly polished hour-markers. The result is an interplay of reflections, vibrations and warmth that echoes the light of Earth’s satellite.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Showcasing one of the largest moons to be found in the watchmaking sphere, the Arnold & Son Perpetual Moon Obsidian stands out for the size of its complication and the aesthetic approach employed by the resolutely British Swiss brand.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Housed in a 42 mm red gold case, beneath a rarely seen golden obsidian dial, is its hand-wound calibre A&S1512, offering a precision double moon phase display.

Panoramic

On the movement side, a hand display allows for extremely fine adjustments.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

On the dial side, a large moon disc occupies almost the entire aperture, presented in a vast window with a round cut-out that allows the changing faces of the moon to be admired. The realistic depiction is crossed by shadows and areas of relief to add to its presence.

Rarity

In the exterior details, Arnold & Son has taken this approach even further.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The moon is only visible because it reflects the light from the sun. In the same way, the light brings the Perpetual Moon Obsidian to life with its shimmering reflections.

A golden heart

From Mexico, the Manufacture sourced of one of the oldest and most intriguing stones: golden obsidian.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This volcanic stone has been mined in Central America since time immemorial and was used in particular in the religious ceremonies of pre-Columbian civilisations. Obsidian has a very high silica content, making it a hard and shiny material.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Golden obsidian owes its shimmer to the semi-precious stone’s chemical composition and its specific crystallisation. Its bronze hue extends far beneath the surface, right into the heart of the material. Despite the minute amount used for the dial, it still produces a glistening effect, reflected in turn in the hands and hour-markers.

Contrasts

Arnold & Son selected cool shades to contrast with the stone. The moon and hands are rhodium-plated and the hour-markers are made from diamond-polished white gold. Together, these choices enhance the reflections of the golden obsidian and the red gold of the case. To complete this contrasting interplay of warm and cool tones, the brand chose a blue alligator-leather strap with visible silver-coloured topstitching.

Accuracy

Like all the movements used by Arnold & Son, the calibre A&S1512 was entirely developed, produced, decorated, assembled, adjusted and cased up in the brand's manufacture in La Chaux-de-Fonds.

This calibre is based on a large barrel with an oscillation frequency of 3 Hz, giving a 90-hour power reserve. Last but not least, the moon phase display of this movement will remain accurate for 122 years before deviating from the actual lunar cycle by one day.

"Preparation, precision and performance pave my way to progress and success. Arnold & Son reflect this vision. It is simply a joy to wear their timepieces. I like the shared, enriching mix of various origins and nationalities. I am British with Somali origins as Arnold & Son is Swiss watchmaking with English roots.” Mo Farah

Arnold & Son is proud to welcome Sir Mohamed Muktar Jama Farah as special ambassador. ‘Mo’ Farah is a 5,000 m and 10,000 m specialist who is immensely popular in his country, Great Britain.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

He is the most successful British athlete in the history of the modern Olympic Games, and the most decorated in the history of British athletics. Sir Mo Farah was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire and knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for services to athletics. A partnership founded on the inherently British values of exception, endurance and elegance.

Sir Mohamed Muktar Jama Farah was born in Somalia and arrived in south-west London at the age of eight, before becoming one of the most successful athletes of all time.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

After winning the European Juniors 5,000 m title in 2001, Mo Farah went on to collect a string of European and world titles.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Then, at the 2012 London Olympics, he won the gold medal for his two favourite distances, the 5,000 m and 10,000 m, in a feat only ever achieved by five other athletes in the history of the games.

Medals

At the 2015 World Championships in Beijing, he again won gold medals in both events. Then, at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, he repeated the feat once more, becoming only the second athlete to ever achieve this Olympic ‘double double’.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In 2017, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for services to athletics. Mo Farah then tried his hand at other disciplines, such as the marathon, winning the Chicago Marathon in 2018 in 2:05:11, setting a new European record in the process! Today, Mo Farah has set his sights on other achievements.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

He has just broken the world record for running the furthest distance possible in one hour, clocking up an impressive 21.330 km. He is also training for the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games

Beyond his formidable track record, Mo Farah is an endearing and cheerful father of four who is involved in several charities, most notably, Save the Children.

Affinities

The relationship between Sir Mo Farah and Arnold & Son began with the athlete’s interest in fine watchmaking and the brand’s English roots, when he chose to wear our DTE and Constant Force Tourbillon timepieces. More than just two large watches on his wrist, they inspired him. DTE carries a message of duality and regularity.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Featuring two independent tourbillons showing two different time zones, DTE reflects Mo Farah’s dual nationality and culture. The precision of the tourbillons pays homage to his performance, while the technicality of the movement mirrors his perfected stride.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Constant Force Tourbillon, meanwhile, is a reminder that whether in watchmaking mechanics or a high-level sporting career, consistency, regularity and application are crucial to success.

This partnership is therefore built on the very best foundations, united by our British roots and these values of endurance.
