On September 3rd, 2025, during Geneva Watch Days in Switzerland, Behrens officially unveils its first timepiece created in collaboration with independent master watchmaker Vianney Halter.

This new creation, the KWH watch, becomes the second piece in the Behrens Master Collection.

A Spark Of Inspiration

Vianney Halter is one of the most celebrated independent watchmakers of his generation. A member of the Académie Horlogère des Créateurs Indépendants (AHCI) since 2000, he was awarded Best Watchmaker at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) in 2011.

His works are recognised for their revolutionary mechanical structures and futuristic design language, earning him international acclaim. His most famous creation, the Antiqua, has been described as a “relic from the future.” Halter’s mechanical aesthetics and philosophy align closely with Behrens’vision of blending innovation with the artistry of traditional watchmaking.

The inspiration for the Master Collection KWH watch came from a visit to Halter’s workshop in Sainte-Croix, a Swiss town famed for its music boxes.

Behrens founder Lin Bingqiang noticed an antique electricity meter in Halter’s collection, which echoed a similar industrial artifact he owned.

This moment of serendipity sparked the idea to translate the aesthetics of vintage industrial instruments into a modern watch design.

Industrial Design Meets Pixel Nostalgia

In the early design phase, both parties studied the structure and principles of antique electricity meters, ultimately focusing on their iconic square form.

This distinctive shape was reimagined as a proportionally scaled-down watch case, bringing the aesthetics of the mechanical industry into fine watchmaking.

Further creative exchanges introduced another layer of inspiration: the classic video games Snake and Tetris. These pixel-based games, born in the early digital era, captivated a generation with their endless growth cycles, elimination, and visual charm.

The watch’s hour display takes direct cues from Snake, using Behrens’patented ruby-bearing micro-chain mechanical system. A “pixel snake” of seven dots rotates continuously around the dial, evoking playful nostalgia.

The packaging pays tribute to Tetris, with arrangements of the seven iconic shapes recreating scenes from the game and completing the retro digital homage. 

The Movement

At its heart, the Master Collection KWH watch houses the newly developed BM06 manual-winding calibre, co-created by Behrens and Vianney Halter.

It features twin barrels and delivers a 72-hour power reserve. The movement is constructed from 870 components and includes a temperature-compensation adjustment system, ensuring the stability of the micro-chain mechanism in all environments.

The lower half of the dial employs Behrens’ axial display system:
● Left axis: power reserve and day-night display. The power reserve indicator arrow is inspired by the aluminium disc markers of vintage electricity meters.

● Right axis: minute display.
Additional functions on the caseback include a calendar and moon phase display at 12 o’clock, which are adjustable via quick-set pushers integrated into the case.

Each version is limited to just 9 pieces worldwide. Both models feature a hand-stitched double-sided leather strap with quick-release technology, matching the futuristic yet playful dial colours.

ABOUT VIANNEY HALTER

Vianney Halter was born in 1963 on the outskirts of Paris, the son of an engine driver on the French railways. He remembers being fascinated by the old machines and mechanical objects that his father brought home. Perhaps this early contact with powerful locomotives, steam engines and other measuring instruments is the reason why he was attracted to technology and mechanics.

At 14 years of age, Vianney Halter made the decision to broaden his interest in mechanics, and took the train to the capital to enrol at the École Horlogère de Paris (Paris Watchmaking School). He qualified in 1980 and spent his first ten years in the profession restoring antique watches and clocks, experience which gave him in-depth knowledge of the art of watchmaking.

Self-employed since 1984, he then went on to create a variety of timepieces for well-known manufacturers including Harry Winston, Breguet, and Audemars Piguet. He has also invented and developed his own collection of wristwatches since 1998.

His designs have been regarded as avant-garde pieces and are considered to have instigated a new shift in the watchmaking world. Vianney Halter makes unusual watches in the traditional method of the master watchmakers of the past, while using singular aesthetics, his own technical patents and unique constructions. All of this is illustrated in his first model, the “Antiqua”, a perpetual calendar presented in 1998. This watch was instantly regarded as a "relic of the future", reinforcing Halter's creativity and allowing him to enter the Académie Horlogère des Créateurs Indépendants (AHCI).

His years as an independent watchmaker continuing the art of watchmaking and his contribution to the modern horological landscape have already earned him nine awards. He has created around ten models of wristwatches, but the high level of workmanship they demand means their production is confidential. Indeed, under 500 pieces created by Vianney Halter have been produced to this day.

When it was launched in 2001, the Freak redefined the rules of watchmaking. It was not just a new watch. It was a reset button. No hands. No dial. No crown. Instead, the Freak introduced a concept that had never been seen before: the movement itself telling the time. This first “superwatch” did not just look different, it functioned differently and ushered in a new era: the Modern Horology Era.

Behind this new Age and radical innovation was the genius and visionary Dr. Ludwig Oechslin. It all began in the 1980s, when most of the industry was turning to quartz. But Ulysse Nardin, in collaboration with Oechslin, developed an Haute Horlogerie marvel, a mechanical wristwatch capable of mapping the night sky: the Astrolabium Galileo Galilei. This extraordinary timepiece, the most complicated watch ever made, earned a place in the Guinness World Records. A few years later, in 2001, the same spirit of innovation and independence gave rise to the Freak — the most complicated time-only watch ever created, and one of the most groundbreaking in horological history.

It was also the very first watch to introduce silicon technology — a move that would trigger a wave across the entire industry and open the door to a new age of high-performance, ultra-precise timekeeping. Since its debut, the Freak has obtained over 20 patents and sparked a movement in 21st century horology. More than a breakthrough in engineering, the Freak is a symbol of creativity, mechanical advancement, and independence.

Introduced in 2019, the Freak X brought this maverick DNA into a streamlined form. For the first time, a crown was added for winding and setting the time. But its signature spirit remained: one-hour flying orbital carousel and a mechanical theatre. With the Freak X Crystalium, Ulysse Nardin takes the next step, merging its pioneering mechanics with a whole new frontier of design: an innovative rotating hour disc, born from a high-tech process at the edge of material science.

Disruptive by nature, refined by craft

At the core is ruthenium, a platinum-group metal known for its strength and shine —10 times rarer than platinum. Over several days, it undergoes a slow, controlled vapour-deposition crystallisation process — the same way frost forms on glass. This process, which took years to perfect, results in natural, fractal-like crystal structures, impossible to duplicate, full of shimmering texture and microscopic complexity. Each disc is a one-off, a singular piece of material art. To heighten its effect, it is treated with a warm rose gold PVD finish and subtle black shading, hand-applied with fine varnish to deepen the contrast and accentuate the light play. This is not decoration. This is next-generation craftsmanship.

The Freak X Crystalium is housed in a black DLC-coated titanium case, with a matching bezel, black hour indicator, and minute bridge. It is paired with a ballistic-textured black rubber strap that gives the watch a bold and modern presence. This ultra-dark backdrop sets the stage for the Crystalium disc, radiant through its rose gold colour, alive with light, and rich in visual depth: a captivating expression of material in motion.

At the heart of the watch lies the automatic calibre UN-230, featuring a flying carrousel with a silicon balance wheel and escapement—crafted entirely in-house at Ulysse Nardin’s dedicated silicon lab, SIGATEC. Both components are suspended by a bridge that functions as the minute hand, completing a full rotation every hour. The Crystalium hour disc, with its pointer positioned beneath the movement, serves as the hour hand and completes a full rotation every 12 hours. This subtle, continuous motion perfectly fuses engineering and aesthetics in seamless synchrony.
